  • Composers like Stravinsky worked ten times harder on their craft than your average composer today. He and others, like Richard Strauss, would work a year or more on a single piece.

  • @gsmonks I know what you mean, but Stravinsky wrote this entire ballet aside from the very ending scene in just a few months. from December to May 1910-11. He revised it in the 40s but like Firebird, it was composed in a few months. in fact the reason Stravinsky got the commission with Diaghilev was because he started working right away and got it done. Then Diaghilev came back to him with the idea for Petrushka. The Rite of Spring was developed for over a year :) and he did work hard!

  • @HalloweenMachine525 That's true- the difference was that The Rite of Spring involved breaking new ground, whereas he was simply writing pieces like Firebird and Petrushka. Richard Strauss likewise worked on Zarathustra for a year because it's such an intricate work.

  • this piece sounds like a winter holiday, joyous, exuberant, frosty-bright, glorious -- everybody's Christmas should have this mood -

  • @kirsten889 our marching band this year has a whole show based off of petrushka, because of it's 100 year anniversary. :)

  • You can definitely hear what parts Zappa quoted in his music.

  • WTF what orchestration is making the sound at 4:58!?!?!?! that is awesome.

  • @NickjamesC That would be the contrabassoon.

  • @NickjamesC Its a contrabassoon

  • nice breakdance at 3:30 :D :D :D

  • it's such a joyous piece, the essence of winter carnival season

  • Getting to Stravinsky has been a long process through different kinds of music and influences popular and eclectic. The video of this Bolshoi performance highlights the music and the dance in a way that makes it the beautiful, intruiguing, artful, and magical. Does anyone know where this performance comes from?

  • 2008 will forever be one of the best years of my life. Our marching band did a show based off of Stravinsky's music and we used Petrushka as our opener.

  • @Salokin3 Lucky! I wish our marching band would have a stravinsky theme... :(

  • This is one of the most incredible things i've ever seen.

  • This is a wonderful production.

  • This is enthralling! The things I stumble upon at 1:55 in the morning . . .

  • super das hier zu finden ! Aber,

Großer gott, was ist das für eine verhunzte version. Passt zum video.

  • This is stunning! Who is the company performing? I really want to get this.

  • GAWD! This is the most stunning piece of ballet on film I have ever seen.

    Can this be purchased somewhere?

In the meantime, thanks for posting this!

  • Best. Petruska. Ever. This never gets old.

  • At 3:33 damn how does he do that? :D

  • A very authenting scenery and great music!

  • It just doesn't get any better than this

  • Wow! It's like Kustodiev's paintings came to life!

  • @limeberry7 LOL! I like your comparison. It does remind me of Kustodiev.

  • lolz my marching band show is based on this peice

  • AHH!! The costumes are lovely! Esp the colourful dress the pirouetting girl is wearing

  • Fuck my neighbours, I'm playing this shit all the way up!

  • 1:35 Is that Zach Galifanakis I see?

  • @jamalam17z7 I think Zack stole his beard from that guy.

  • Ohk i'm new to this. What the hell is going on?

  • I . Love . You . Stravinsky . (:

  • it took me ten hours to spell petrushka

  • why is this not in the right key?

  • @peacelovebassoon0107 There are two versions - this is the 1947 one, and you must be thinking of the 1911 original, which is in a different key.

  • I listen to this piece seriously well over 10 times a day. It just never gets old. PsytranceMan777 isn't the only person who is addicted to this!

  • @tomhetistgut3 I'm with ya!

  • @tomhetistgut3 You are not alone! I listen to this a lot too. I am addicted to the Abdel Rehman el Bacha's piano's version pf Petrushka's recital. He is brilliant.

  • The approach to the music in this nicely contrasts modern styles intended for studio recordings. Thanks for posting.

  • 3:25

  • We played this piece in my university orchestra and it's really really awesome to see it in ballet. I had always wondered what the choreography was like. AWESOME!

  • Zoop

  • I'M ADDICTED TO THIS PIECE!!! o.O

  • Petrushka is a story of a Russian traditional puppet, Petrushka, who is made of straw but who comes to life and develops emotions.

The play opens on St. Petersburg's Admiralty Square.

When the curtain rises on a tiny theater, as the Charlatan introduces the inert, lifeless puppet figures of Petrushka, a Ballerina, and a Moor.

The Charlatan casts a magic spell with his flute. The puppets come to life and perform a vigorous Russian Dance among the astounded carnival-goers.

  • Petrouchka's dancing makes me giggle! They sure didn't waste any stage space with the ensemble and props!

  • Fantastic. It's like Opera, but singing is replaced with dancing but acting is intact.

  • the relationship between the different tempi are not as stravinsky notated in the score. he was very meticulous about every metric modulation. the tempi generated in this performace are totally arbitrary. how could such a big production be put on without even understanding the music on a basic rhythmic level?

  • Maybe it didn't translate well to the screen so they changed it? Or am I way off base? haha

  • Unbelievable. I played this in college orchestra, but have never seen it staged. Thank you.

  • Petrushka's dance is one of the most difficult dance in the ballet's history. Bravo!

  • 6:52!

  • amazing

  • I love Petruskha the ballet, but can't seem to find it anywhere, blockbuster, ebay, hollywood video... where did you find it?

  • I added it to my favourite videos.

  • hey! thanks for this great video!

I'm looking for the video of Nizhinsky (at least I think it was him, it was a very old footage) dansing Petroushka, is there any possibility to get it? I saw it long time ago on TV, just hope to see it some day again, here... :)

  • Nijinsky's footage is not available. Somebody has uploaded fake clips on YT as Nijinksy's.

  • I see... thanks for the info. :)

But still, who was the guy the video showed then??? Any info about it???

  • MEAN BALLERINA< SHOWMAN< & MOOR!! :(

  • ive never seen Petrushka ,but wow this is great!!!!!!!!

  • I'm the ballerina doll in our AS production at college :)

  • this is magnificent!

  • Мне нравится этом балет!!

  • Obviously not; this was premiered 99 years ago, so I doubt anyone has the perfect set replica in mind.

  • It actually premiered in 1911 so 97 years ago, but your point is still valid :)

  • Hmm, I thought it was 1909. Well, I knew it was some time around there.

  • Stravinsky had three big ballets: Firebird in 1910, Petrushka in 1911, and Rite of Spring in 1913.

  • I know of his other ballets; they're some of my favorite pieces.
