Composers like Stravinsky worked ten times harder on their craft than your average composer today. He and others, like Richard Strauss, would work a year or more on a single piece.
@gsmonks I know what you mean, but Stravinsky wrote this entire ballet aside from the very ending scene in just a few months. from December to May 1910-11. He revised it in the 40s but like Firebird, it was composed in a few months. in fact the reason Stravinsky got the commission with Diaghilev was because he started working right away and got it done. Then Diaghilev came back to him with the idea for Petrushka. The Rite of Spring was developed for over a year :) and he did work hard!
@HalloweenMachine525 That's true- the difference was that The Rite of Spring involved breaking new ground, whereas he was simply writing pieces like Firebird and Petrushka. Richard Strauss likewise worked on Zarathustra for a year because it's such an intricate work.
Getting to Stravinsky has been a long process through different kinds of music and influences popular and eclectic. The video of this Bolshoi performance highlights the music and the dance in a way that makes it the beautiful, intruiguing, artful, and magical. Does anyone know where this performance comes from?
2008 will forever be one of the best years of my life. Our marching band did a show based off of Stravinsky's music and we used Petrushka as our opener.
@tomhetistgut3 You are not alone! I listen to this a lot too. I am addicted to the Abdel Rehman el Bacha's piano's version pf Petrushka's recital. He is brilliant.
We played this piece in my university orchestra and it's really really awesome to see it in ballet. I had always wondered what the choreography was like. AWESOME!
the relationship between the different tempi are not as stravinsky notated in the score. he was very meticulous about every metric modulation. the tempi generated in this performace are totally arbitrary. how could such a big production be put on without even understanding the music on a basic rhythmic level?
I'm looking for the video of Nizhinsky (at least I think it was him, it was a very old footage) dansing Petroushka, is there any possibility to get it? I saw it long time ago on TV, just hope to see it some day again, here... :)
For those who asked: This is from the dvd "Return of the Firebird'" distributed by DECCA. 2002. Bolshoi dancers: Petrushka- Andris Liepa, Doll-Tatiana Beletskaya, The Moor- Gediminas Taranda. Also on this dvd, "The Firebird" with Nina Ananiashvilli and "Scheherazade" with Ilze Liepa. Excellent production directed and staged by LIepa.

@peacelovebassoon0107 There are two versions - this is the 1947 one, and you must be thinking of the 1911 original, which is in a different key.

Petrushka is a story of a Russian traditional puppet, Petrushka, who is made of straw but who comes to life and develops emotions.
The play opens on St. Petersburg's Admiralty Square.
When the curtain rises on a tiny theater, as the Charlatan introduces the inert, lifeless puppet figures of Petrushka, a Ballerina, and a Moor.
The Charlatan casts a magic spell with his flute. The puppets come to life and perform a vigorous Russian Dance among the astounded carnival-goers.

Petrouchka's dancing makes me giggle! They sure didn't waste any stage space with the ensemble and props!
jarhead9887 2 years ago 3
Fantastic. It's like Opera, but singing is replaced with dancing but acting is intact.

It actually premiered in 1911 so 97 years ago, but your point is still valid :)

Hmm, I thought it was 1909. Well, I knew it was some time around there.

Stravinsky had three big ballets: Firebird in 1910, Petrushka in 1911, and Rite of Spring in 1913.
