  • Such a great and underated band ! Spilt milk is a tour de force. Yes elements of Supertramp, Beachboys, Beatles etc; but when performed with such craft and

originality the result transends the epithet derivative.

  • outstanding song and video

  • I can't get enough of this song!

  • THE BEST JELLYFISH SONG AND ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER........ No contest!!!!! The lyrics don't get any bettter.............

  • 'So Father Mason Clutches his Crucifix/ Baptised the Baby in Whiskey and Liquorice'

What an excellent stand alone lyric, the whole song is brilliant but I always loved that line... In fact I reckon that 'Whiskey and Liquorice' would make an excellent name for a rock band.

  • *drools* me wanty for rock band 2...

  • Stupid grunge.....this should have been it. So much more talent than Nirvana!!!!!!!!!!

  • amazing song writing

  • brings me back to my early teens.....i was so prod to find these guys

  • The demos of Split Milk on the Fan Club compilation are beyond words purely beautiful. They are 99.9% fully formed genius that became the album. I feel humbled in the face of such pure genius.

    TRUE

  • I would say it's 10cc meets Badfinger at a Beatles concert who brought a date, The Partridge Family. You know why they didn't make a huge impact? Because as clever, skilled and talented as the music was there wasn't a thing sexy about it. Their appeal is wholly cerebral. The mass record buying public were simply too thick to get it. I don't think they wanted to be big frankly. Just break even and maintain the pastiche of critical acclaim/underground cool. They knew they were good.

  • You guys can't not comment on the Beach Boys influence!!

  • I like all the comments. Jellyfish made people uncomfortable for two reasons: They were clear evidence that it wasn't talent, innovation and skill that motivated music listeners to buy a CD, it was sex. For all their brains and talent Jellyfish were utterly sexless. It wasn't their fault they didn't make it big. It was ours. Look who we made millionaires. God forgive us.

  • their vids are such a trip.

  • haha my friends hate my music i love jellyfish i was singing this song today at work im going to get high and listen to spiltmilk now ^-^

  • One of the reasons I love Youtube is that they have videos like this one.. a band I love, but my apt at the time didn't have cable - I was lucky enough to see them in June of 93.

  • I love these guys. This is the most overlooked band of the 90's and possibly ever. This song reminds me a lot of ELO.

  • Perfect! I was looking for this video ;)

  • I love these guys!!!! I hated Grunge!!! Hated Grunge!!!! Hated Grunge!!!

    Jellyfish... Brilliant!!!

  • gods.

  • Wrong place wrong time. Jellyfish a truly clever and talented band with great skill in the crafting of a song. Too bad the were around at the peak of grunge.....Belly Button and Spilt Milk are both must haves

  • Jellyfish were so ahead of their time...very sad that they were active in the hey day of Nirvana and Soundgarden, radio didn't know what to do with them, so they didn't. I look at this stuff like the albums Brian Wilson and the Beatles didn't give us. So talented!!!

  • It's odd that it seems so hard for radio to know what to do with them or anyone. Surely if a record is good, just play the darn thing!

BBC London used to play Jellyfish a lot but that station has rarely had more than a listenership of about 500,000 so wouldn't have helped that much.

  • Jellyfish Rocks! Their first album is excellent as well. Influences of ELO, Queen, Supertramp, Beatles/Wings (yeah, I said Wings! Ha!), love it!

  • I picked up Bellybutton when it first came out and I was utterly charmed. Then came Spilt Milk, which blew me away. Then they broke up, and I cried. They were a unique breath of fresh air in a music world oversaturated with carbon copy hair metal bands (which is what I was listening to at the time). They changed my musical world for the better. I can't go a day without listening to them. I heart Andy Sturmer, who remains one of my all time fave lyricists and musicians. *sniff*...I miss them.

  • does anyone know the words of the final part (any ol' time at all...)?

  • any old at time at all

any old way that i fall

(help me darling I can't stop falling

i just lie awake with my new mistake

    ooh ooh ohh)

  • "Any ol' time at all,

Any ol' way that I fall..."

That's what I always thought it was, anyway!

  • THE GREATEST BAND! Well that is my opinion. But What was the first video from Spilt Milk? I really wish I could find this in a better quality version. Thanks for the video!

  • I think there was a video for The Ghost at Number One

  • these guys are off the hook,,and i listen to metal mostly,,:) this singer is awsume and the backing vocals are top notch ,,i rest my case!@!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just remembered this song from my "childhood." Love it!

  • It's like Crowded House meets Supertramp. Cool

  • Actually it's more like The Beatles meet XTC and run headlong into a van loaded with the Kinks and Queen.

  • Friggin' perfect mix of bands, dude.

  • Actually, I always thought it was more like 10CC meets Badfinger at The Partridge Family house to listen to Beatles records but somebody's pesky little brother put his Beach Boys record in one of the jackets :)

  • the best description I have ever heard.

  • @NelsonClick i think i love you.

  • drown your teeth in tooth decay.....in the words of joe the lips what a great lyric !!!!!!!

  • Just discovered these guys a few minutes ago - they're well good!

  • i want a Rhoads damnit!!!!!!!

    sounds gooooooodddddddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I also agree that this is the best song of the '90's and it's off of one of the best albums EVER. It has the marque of The Beach Boys' 'Pet Sounds'.

  • castanets!

  • Nice to see Tim Smith and Eric Dover get their few seconds of video fame here. Spilt Milk may be the best power pop album of all time.

  • Sound a lot like the Feeling.

  • The best song of the nineties...yes I said it.

  • Bloody great band. Brilliant song.

  • I really wish the video quality was better...

  • This song has GOT IT ALL!!!

  • I dont understand why they didnt make it a lot bigger than they di. One of my favorite 90's bands...thanks for the post

  • These guys were always a major hit with recording engineers, musicians and composers. The songwriting techniques and methods that they made sound so easy were very complex. They didn't simply string a few chords together and showed the drummer where to hit the snare. The instrumentation alone was much in advance of what any of their peers were doing. The fact they were overlooked by the general public made them extremely cool in my opinion.

  • This was a real band

  • yes they are still a real band

  • ok, 3:49 - 3:50 really shows how manning can look like a chick, dose anyone else agree?

  • forgot these guys....god I loved this cd, and song. This is one of those rare albums that is a complete work. It makes the most sense when listened to from start to finish. You can hear all kinds of influences, but at the same time totally unique.

  • Jesus. Had totally forgotten how good these fellas were. And so unlike anything else at the time. Am downloading the two albums again right away.

  • This is sometimes depressing. I mean, as a musician, hearing stuff like this, 15 years after it comes out, and it's still fresh as day 1... what's the point of trying to follow such greatness?

Oh well, take it as inspiration and count it as new life experience. Bravo!

  • Also forgot to mention that one can hear lots of 10CC influence here. check out "Life is a Minestrone" for a good example.

  • Awesome. They were such a breathe of fresh air in the era of grunge.

  • One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands. If you don't have Spilt Milk, get it. One of the best recorded and produced albums...ever! The songs are well written.... ok, I like Jellyfish!!

  • Aaaahhh memories. These guys were my soundtrack for a couble of years.

  • Russian Hill is one of my favorite songs from Jellyfish - these guy's are one of the bands that stood out in the 90's if you really listened to them, no one else sounded like them in that time....they may have been outta place but they made their mark for sure...one of my favorites to this day....long live Jellyfish!

  • Well they were great but keep in mind they followed in the footsteps of other pop groups such as Big Star, BadFinger, the Producers (from whom they eventually got bassist Tim Smith), and even ELO. but yes I feel that JF was an exceptional group that shoulda been bigger.

  • ...'the Producers'! Hilarious! No possible comparison.

And Tim Smith was a ringer after the band got dropped.

  • Russian Hill is still one of my favorites - these guy's were truely talented and maybe they were out of the time machine a lil bit - but their music is timeless...one of the most amazing sounds from the 90's for sure...

  • lyrical masterpiece!

  • one of his best lyrical inventions!!!!

  • Bloody brilliant!

  • too bad the video cant even keep pace with the genius of the song!!!!!beautifully truthful.

  • I´m glad that I got to see this even if the quality is poor.

    Love it. Thanx

  • I saw them live in Boulder, covering for World Party, and then once in Denver at the Mercury Cafe. Sturmer's standing-up drumming was a joy to behold, and their set was incredible.

  • WOW.. I forgot how great those guys were. Simply amazing. One of the greatest power pop bands of all time- right up there w/the Posies,Big Star,et al.But I have to ask of telecabine... why is this vid so fozzy & soft? Could you upload a better res version?

Don't want to appear ungrateful er nuthin'... BUT...

  • I saw them at City Stages in Birmingham, AL. INCREDIBLE!!! Too bad the crowd just didn't get how great this band really was. Sigh.

  • So cardwell posts a video response (which sucks by the way) and now I can't watch my favorite Jellyfish vid. Thanks a bunch

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

    OMG

    OMG

    OMG

    OMG

    OMG

  • Man I really miss this band. They had such a fresh sound with amazing production value on their albums. This is possibly my favorite song of theirs too...come back Jellyfish...the radio needs you.

  • I saw the last Jellyfish concert in Florida. It blew me away. Such a waste that they broke up. Off shoots are worth checking out.

Alternative... search for The Pillbugs and Mark Mikel on youTube. They've filled the void for me since the demise of Jellyfish :)

  • My favourite 6-8 pop song of all time. "Spilt Milk" is one of the best albums of the last 20 years.

  • LOVE Eric for his Lyrics and musicianship!

  • Not Not Bad

  • In SAT terms: Jellyfish is to the 90s as Big Star is to the 70s. In other words, this band was in the right place at the wrong time. History will be kind to Jellyfish, because the masses certainly weren't during their time.

  • Possibly the most perfect pop song ever !!!

  • C'mon Andy and Roger- quit the childish bickering.

    Get back together damnit!!!

  • I love the slowly emerging Toto "Hold the Line" quotes.

  • im only 11 and jellyfish are my fav band no one likes it in my town but the vid's great thanks 4 putting it on

  • Most under-rated band of all time.

  • I shed a single tear that I never got to see these guys live. Simply incredible.

  • I saw them in '95; they opened for "Tears for Fear" at a small theater in San Diego. Half of the audience left after they finished as did I and my friends.

  • I think "Spilt Milk" is one of the greatest pop albums, not of the 90's, but of ALL TIME. If you don't have it, go treat yourself immediately.

  • Pure brilliance. An amalgamation of my favourite sounds..and remain original...what a lovely way...drowning sins in tooth decay...

  • this song rules.

  • Please Re-Form for 1 more tour.......Please Roger Please Andy....If you only played the UK I would travel from Spain tomorrow!

  • amazing song writing.

    chord progression kings

  • For such a landmark band, they sure didn't put the effort in their videos to match. I wonder if they'd hired a better video producer if they would have gotten any more notoriety. Still one of the best bands in history.

  • Jellyfish was good for their time.. i enjoyed them when I saw them (three times)

  • Jellyfish kick asses. One of the last creative breaths on rock.

  • As one review put it, it's like the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Queen all combined.

  • There's a Jellyfish tribute album coming out soon - there's a page on myspace - if you're interested do a myspace search on : jellyfishtributealbum

  • It is interesting to read interviews of Jellyfish and hear who their music heroes were. You can hear so many different late 70's pop artists in their sound.

Now, we have this new rock that has exploded into popularity called EMO and to me it is just a weaker attempt at what Jellyfish has so successfully created in the 90's.

  • Love this song so much! WOW! what harmonies! Spilt Milk is one of the best...EVER!I always thought these guys had rather be in the studio...they are so talented!

  • Spilt Milk is definitely in my top 5 albums of all time. I miss this band.

  • It sickins me to no end that everyone on this planet know the black eyed peas and 10percent know jellyfish.

  • Fantastic! Old guy loving it.....No frickin' drum machines or computer generated crap, or God forbid, pitch correction, the newest worst mistake of the music INDUSTRY.

  • Simply THE best Jellyfish song, ever! This song hooked me to their timeless sound!!

  • How can you mix so much talent, so great Beatles, Queen, Supertramp, Beach Boys so seamlessly? Jellyfish had an implosion of talent... what a band! they'll be missed for ever... so fantastic!!!

  • best song ever!

  • I wish I could write music this good-i love these guys

  • The chorus still gives me chills. Here's hoping McFly's cover of "Baby's Coming Back" gives Jellyfish the recognition they deserve as one of the greatest bands of all time - Unbelievable amount of talent in that band.

  • I have put this song on like hundreds of mixed tapes for girls and they all call it the " rollerskating song". Haha, gotta love girls and you GOTTA love Jellyfish.

  • what happened to these geniuses??

  • Still makes me weepy eyed.Modern bands please look at this band and take note!!!!

  • thanks for posting this video! Didn't know it existed. I saw these guys live with Tears for Fears in '93 and as much as I love TFF, these guys were much better live...two dynamite albums is not enough...can't get enough of their clever lyrics and musicianship.

  • ii Love this song so muuch! x

    :) :) :) :) :) :)

    Nuff Love

    Megan xx

  • LOL ROGER!!I was laughing about him the whole time :D

I love this song, really is a shame about them breaking up.

  • The most disapointing thing about this band was that they broke up and never did any other projects.

  • Such a distinct and creative sound they had. They truly had substance. Very cool video btw.

  • One of the best bands ever. I miss the great Jellyfish sound. Such a shame that they aren't around anymore.

  • The Roger Manning solo album is SOME comfort, though.

  • great thanks ! saw em live in L.A. place was full of industry types checking em out, the stand up drumming and perfect harmonies, bubble machine hippy happy vibe still very memorable

  • This is in my top five favorite songs of all time, and "Spilt Milk" is in my top five albums.

  • Ahh, the Jellyfish. A timeless sound. I think if they would have held on a little longer they would have gone over huge here in the States. Hair metal was fading and grunge was still coming up. I remember listening to a alot of Matthew Sweet and Jeff Buckley then, too. Oh, well. At least we got these two awesome albumns.

  • Buckley, Sweet and Jellyfish. What a great list!

  • one of the most underestimated bands ever please come back

  • To check out my twisted would-be video response to this, look for Birthday Girl, by Microdisney here on YouTube. I think you'll agree, it fits.

  • i think that if we get a van halen/roth reunion and also a police reunion then a jellyfish reunion has to happen.

  • nice

  • amen to that, mossylog

  • van halen actually never reunited, but you don't hear me complaining.

  • Amen to what Mossy said!

  • The first time I listened to "Spilt Milk" I nearly choked, it was so good. Amazing. Shame they never did more. I've heard some Falkner, but it didn't grab me as well as the 2 Jellyfish discs. I think I wore out my original cassette of "Spilt Milk" tho.

  • Spilt Milk is definetly one of my favorite albums. It's kind of depressing how they only ever made 2 albums and were never really popular.. Don't really think theres a chance for a reunion.

  • Who's playing guitar in this video? Video's a little grainy... Lyle Workman? Jon Brion? Eric Dover?

  • Jason Falkner. Check out some of his solo albums, especially 'Bliss Decending'.

  • it's a bit blurry....but that LOOKS like Eric Dover....i don't believe he actually plays on the album though....

  • That's Eric Dover in the video, but he doesn't appear on Spilt Milk. Jason Falkner left after Bellybutton.

  • Eric Dover. Falkner didn't play on the second album (he got frustrated and left after the Bellybutton tour). Eric only played live and in the videos, like Chris Manning on bass with the first album. Guitars were done by studio musicians for the album.

  • Eric Dover - but didn't record on the the album.

  • Only people who underrated them were Americans. They were very much loved here in Japan. They were popular in Europe too.

  • this song always made me cry! can't really explain that..emotionally sensitive i guess..brilliant!thanks for posting.

  • I had that same response the first time I heard "the Glutton of Sympathy" and "All is Forgiven".

  • these guys r awsome

they sound like the beach boys(pet sounds)

    sweet wit the harmonizing

    and queen in some songs

  • yep possibly the most under rated band in history

  • Great band. Truth be told, they absolutely didn't get along. Their second record took way too long to come out and their passion for 70's peter max clothes confused the 90's Mtv generation. Then came Nirvana, they were toast. Snowballs chance of a reunion.

  • Brilliant song

  • Spilt milk is the greatest album ever.. MUCH missed band

  • thanx for posting this vid . i didn't know it existed! one of the best ever live bands and sweet guys in real life too.

  • only introduced to this band recently and i love them.

definitely one of my favourite songs along with ghost at number one x

  • Spilt Milk is an absolute masterpiece, and this song contributes strongly to that fact!

  • One of the best live bands I've ever seen. I wish they'd get back together and put out more music. Nice to see young ones turning on!

  • Oh man, this and Brighter Day are my all time favorite Jellyfish songs. Thank you for uploading.

  • I was only introduced to Jellyfish this year. By far, this is my favourite of their songs! Excellent band!!!

  • the most underrated album in history

  • I didn't even know there was a video for this song! Thank you!

  • This is a fantastic song.. It still sounds fresh.. Amazing.

  • this song is absolutely brilliant

  • my fave jellyfish song

  • Why the heck did this wonderful band split up only after two albums (which are truly gems from the 90es)?

  • well..Falkner left after Bellybutton cuz he didn't think they were going beyond their influences. But, Spilt Milk took over a year to record, and by then, Sturmer and Manning pretty much hated each other. I agree though; As a musician, it's hard to think that I could hate one of my fellow musicians after creating some fantastic music like Jellyfish did.

  • "Ghost at Number One" was the first release off Spilt Milk! and there is a video (filmed in the desert) Andy looks gorgeous as ever!!

  • Ah, the memories!

  • Yo, ozbocfan, i worked in radio then, and we played "The King Is Half Undressed" from the first record, and then (you're right) "Joining a Fan Club" for the second record. Is Beatnik Beatch on here?

  • Oh man what a song ! No other band could make maraccas cool. Wonder what the first single off "Spilt Milk" was (Joining a Fan Club maybe?)Better group of songs on two albums that alot of shit bands do in ten.

  • Thanks for posting this, it's one of my fav bands from the 90s.

  • any jellyfish is good jellyfish

    keep um coming
