Such a great and underated band ! Spilt milk is a tour de force. Yes elements of Supertramp, Beachboys, Beatles etc; but when performed with such craft and
originality the result transends the epithet derivative.
'So Father Mason Clutches his Crucifix/Bapitsed the baby with Whiskey and Liquorice'
What an amazing stand alone lyric... I love the whole song, but this lyric especially. I always thought that 'Whiskey and Liquorice' would make an excellent name for a Rock Band.
'So Father Mason Clutches his Crucifix/ Baptised the Baby in Whiskey and Liquorice'
What an excellent stand alone lyric, the whole song is brilliant but I always loved that line... In fact I reckon that 'Whiskey and Liquorice' would make an excellent name for a rock band.
The demos of Split Milk on the Fan Club compilation are beyond words purely beautiful. They are 99.9% fully formed genius that became the album. I feel humbled in the face of such pure genius.
I would say it's 10cc meets Badfinger at a Beatles concert who brought a date, The Partridge Family. You know why they didn't make a huge impact? Because as clever, skilled and talented as the music was there wasn't a thing sexy about it. Their appeal is wholly cerebral. The mass record buying public were simply too thick to get it. I don't think they wanted to be big frankly. Just break even and maintain the pastiche of critical acclaim/underground cool. They knew they were good.
I like all the comments. Jellyfish made people uncomfortable for two reasons: They were clear evidence that it wasn't talent, innovation and skill that motivated music listeners to buy a CD, it was sex. For all their brains and talent Jellyfish were utterly sexless. It wasn't their fault they didn't make it big. It was ours. Look who we made millionaires. God forgive us.
One of the reasons I love Youtube is that they have videos like this one.. a band I love, but my apt at the time didn't have cable - I was lucky enough to see them in June of 93.
Wrong place wrong time. Jellyfish a truly clever and talented band with great skill in the crafting of a song. Too bad the were around at the peak of grunge.....Belly Button and Spilt Milk are both must haves
Jellyfish were so ahead of their time...very sad that they were active in the hey day of Nirvana and Soundgarden, radio didn't know what to do with them, so they didn't. I look at this stuff like the albums Brian Wilson and the Beatles didn't give us. So talented!!!
I picked up Bellybutton when it first came out and I was utterly charmed. Then came Spilt Milk, which blew me away. Then they broke up, and I cried. They were a unique breath of fresh air in a music world oversaturated with carbon copy hair metal bands (which is what I was listening to at the time). They changed my musical world for the better. I can't go a day without listening to them. I heart Andy Sturmer, who remains one of my all time fave lyricists and musicians. *sniff*...I miss them.
THE GREATEST BAND! Well that is my opinion. But What was the first video from Spilt Milk? I really wish I could find this in a better quality version. Thanks for the video!
Actually, I always thought it was more like 10CC meets Badfinger at The Partridge Family house to listen to Beatles records but somebody's pesky little brother put his Beach Boys record in one of the jackets :)
These guys were always a major hit with recording engineers, musicians and composers. The songwriting techniques and methods that they made sound so easy were very complex. They didn't simply string a few chords together and showed the drummer where to hit the snare. The instrumentation alone was much in advance of what any of their peers were doing. The fact they were overlooked by the general public made them extremely cool in my opinion.
forgot these guys....god I loved this cd, and song. This is one of those rare albums that is a complete work. It makes the most sense when listened to from start to finish. You can hear all kinds of influences, but at the same time totally unique.
This is sometimes depressing. I mean, as a musician, hearing stuff like this, 15 years after it comes out, and it's still fresh as day 1... what's the point of trying to follow such greatness?
Oh well, take it as inspiration and count it as new life experience. Bravo!
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands. If you don't have Spilt Milk, get it. One of the best recorded and produced albums...ever! The songs are well written.... ok, I like Jellyfish!!
Russian Hill is one of my favorite songs from Jellyfish - these guy's are one of the bands that stood out in the 90's if you really listened to them, no one else sounded like them in that time....they may have been outta place but they made their mark for sure...one of my favorites to this day....long live Jellyfish!
Well they were great but keep in mind they followed in the footsteps of other pop groups such as Big Star, BadFinger, the Producers (from whom they eventually got bassist Tim Smith), and even ELO. but yes I feel that JF was an exceptional group that shoulda been bigger.
Russian Hill is still one of my favorites - these guy's were truely talented and maybe they were out of the time machine a lil bit - but their music is timeless...one of the most amazing sounds from the 90's for sure...
I saw them live in Boulder, covering for World Party, and then once in Denver at the Mercury Cafe. Sturmer's standing-up drumming was a joy to behold, and their set was incredible.
WOW.. I forgot how great those guys were. Simply amazing. One of the greatest power pop bands of all time- right up there w/the Posies,Big Star,et al.But I have to ask of telecabine... why is this vid so fozzy & soft? Could you upload a better res version?
Don't want to appear ungrateful er nuthin'... BUT...
Man I really miss this band. They had such a fresh sound with amazing production value on their albums. This is possibly my favorite song of theirs too...come back Jellyfish...the radio needs you.
In SAT terms: Jellyfish is to the 90s as Big Star is to the 70s. In other words, this band was in the right place at the wrong time. History will be kind to Jellyfish, because the masses certainly weren't during their time.
I saw them in '95; they opened for "Tears for Fear" at a small theater in San Diego. Half of the audience left after they finished as did I and my friends.
For such a landmark band, they sure didn't put the effort in their videos to match. I wonder if they'd hired a better video producer if they would have gotten any more notoriety. Still one of the best bands in history.
It is interesting to read interviews of Jellyfish and hear who their music heroes were. You can hear so many different late 70's pop artists in their sound.
Now, we have this new rock that has exploded into popularity called EMO and to me it is just a weaker attempt at what Jellyfish has so successfully created in the 90's.
Love this song so much! WOW! what harmonies! Spilt Milk is one of the best...EVER!I always thought these guys had rather be in the studio...they are so talented!
Fantastic! Old guy loving it.....No frickin' drum machines or computer generated crap, or God forbid, pitch correction, the newest worst mistake of the music INDUSTRY.
How can you mix so much talent, so great Beatles, Queen, Supertramp, Beach Boys so seamlessly? Jellyfish had an implosion of talent... what a band! they'll be missed for ever... so fantastic!!!
The chorus still gives me chills. Here's hoping McFly's cover of "Baby's Coming Back" gives Jellyfish the recognition they deserve as one of the greatest bands of all time - Unbelievable amount of talent in that band.
I have put this song on like hundreds of mixed tapes for girls and they all call it the " rollerskating song". Haha, gotta love girls and you GOTTA love Jellyfish.

Ahh, the Jellyfish. A timeless sound. I think if they would have held on a little longer they would have gone over huge here in the States. Hair metal was fading and grunge was still coming up. Spilt Milk is definetly one of my favorite albums. It's kind of depressing how they only ever made 2 albums and were never really popular.. Don't really think theres a chance for a reunion.
Eric Dover. Falkner didn't play on the second album (he got frustrated and left after the Bellybutton tour). Eric only played live and in the videos, like Chris Manning on bass with the first album. Guitars were done by studio musicians for the album.
Great band. Truth be told, they absolutely didn't get along. Their second record took way too long to come out and their passion for 70's peter max clothes confused the 90's Mtv generation. Then came Nirvana, they were toast. Snowballs chance of a reunion.
well..Falkner left after Bellybutton cuz he didn't think they were going beyond their influences. But, Spilt Milk took over a year to record, and by then, Sturmer and Manning pretty much hated each other. I agree though; As a musician, it's hard to think that I could hate one of my fellow musicians after creating some fantastic music like Jellyfish did.
Yo, ozbocfan, i worked in radio then, and we played "The King Is Half Undressed" from the first record, and then (you're right) "Joining a Fan Club" for the second record. Is Beatnik Beatch on here?
Oh man what a song ! No other band could make maraccas cool. Wonder what the first single off "Spilt Milk" was (Joining a Fan Club maybe?)Better group of songs on two albums that alot of shit bands do in ten.
Such a great and underated band ! Spilt milk is a tour de force. Yes elements of Supertramp, Beachboys, Beatles etc; but when performed with such craft and
originality the result transends the epithet derivative.

It's odd that it seems so hard for radio to know what to do with them or anyone. Surely if a record is good, just play the darn thing!
BBC London used to play Jellyfish a lot but that station has rarely had more than a listenership of about 500,000 so wouldn't have helped that much.

it's a bit blurry....but that LOOKS like Eric Dover....i don't believe he actually plays on the album though....

That's Eric Dover in the video, but he doesn't appear on Spilt Milk. Jason Falkner left after Bellybutton.

Eric Dover. Falkner didn't play on the second album (he got frustrated and left after the Bellybutton tour). Eric only played live and in the videos, like Chris Manning on bass with the first album. Guitars were done by studio musicians for the album.

Only people who underrated them were Americans. They were very much loved here in Japan. They were popular in Europe too.

Great band. Truth be told, they absolutely didn't get along. Their second record took way too long to come out and their passion for 70's peter max clothes confused the 90's Mtv generation. Then came Nirvana, they were toast. Snowballs chance of a reunion.

One of the best live bands I've ever seen. I wish they'd get back together and put out more music. Nice to see young ones turning on!

Why the heck did this wonderful band split up only after two albums (which are truly gems from the 90es)?
orangefiltersky 5 years ago
well..Falkner left after Bellybutton cuz he didn't think they were going beyond their influences.
