In the old testament it was a physical covenant and God had chosen a physical people (The Israelites) so God removed certain people to make way for his chosen people. But we are no longer under the old covenant, we are under the new testament. Also Jesus is perfect, other wise he wouldn't be able to wash us clean of all our sins. =)
