@malleyog, you're right. He's one of several Americans who can play right along with some great Irish musicians, but don't really get the play outside of their neck of the woods. He's well known on the West Coast of the U.S. though.
I just discovered this amazing video of a musician I had the pleasure of first hearing some years ago in Galway. I'm Irish and I still can't understand how an American fiddle player can sound so right. He's as good as anyone living, and if he had an Irish last name (perhaps his father?) he'd be famous.
So did James Kelly write that first tune for Randal's sons, Willie and Owen? How sweet... :-D
