your nuts are u dumb were Becker, Edberg, Rafter, Courier, Pioline, Krajicek, Goran, Kuerten, Bruguera, Lendl, McEnroe, Agassi, Chang, Stich in the same era dumb ass,
People forget (or never knew) that Sampras played the baseline MUCH MORE than Serve and Volley early in his career. He started SV more when he got slower and had less stamina. Early, he played a lot of aggressive baseline, except indoors and on grass. People also forget how fast and graceful he was, just like Federer. By the end of his career, he was a couple steps slower, now, he is 4 steps slower, but STILL he can hang with anybody in the world. Amazing.
Sampras has an all-court game, so yes he did both. the only difference was that his confidence in his S/V went UP later on, which was why he won Wimbledon 7 times....it was NOT because he was slower (in fact, you must be quick to S/V). Notice that Pete's baseline game from 1988-1992 only got him 1 Grand Slam.
No. First of all, 1988-90 is misleading. His FIRST slam was 1990, nobody expect him to win in 88/89! lol. In fact, he himself has said his first win came early, before he and his game were totally ready.
Second, in 93, 94, 95, 96, he was still playing largely from the baseline outside of grass and fast indoor courts. He certainly rushed the net at moments and SV'd occasionally but he was definitely all-court and started back on serve more often than not.
One exception to this was that by 95, during a year of intense rivalry with Agassi, he started experimenting with much more SV to tip the advantage in his favour. Even so, he stayed back A LOT.
By the LATE 90's, his had slowed 1 or 2 steps and in fact, this is when he started taking Annacone seriously. Annacone had always wanted more SV, no suprise considering his game. Nevertheless, I did not say it was "because" he was slower. You read that into my statement. I would attribute it far more
to his ailing stamina, which I also mentioned. Sampras always had questionable stamina, that was achilles heel and by the late 90's it was not only worse, it was very well known among the players. SV forced the issue and shortened up the points/match.
It's amazing Pete at this day and age can still hang with Federer(even if Federer is just coasting, it's still quite the feat). I would have loved to see these two guys go at it in their primes. Federer will probably end up with more grand slams, but Pete will always be my favorite player. I think Pete has less Grand Slams, in part, because he played in the same era as another all-time great, Andre Agassi, not to mention Rafter, Courier, etc who are all champions in their own right.
Agree with that so much. If Roger had to play Becker, Edberg, Rafter, Courier, Pioline, Krajicek, Goran, Kuerten, Bruguera, Lendl, McEnroe, Agassi, Chang, Stich, etc his grand slam total would be less than Pete. His competition during his career, save for Rafa, is very deficient - Roddick no backhand, Hewitt no weapons, and Safin head case.
@walliegirl2 If Sampras had to play Becker/Edberg IN THEIR PRIMES ('85 to '90) the American would have landed up with ZERO Wimbies; Put him in the 80s against PEAK Connors, McEnroe, Lendl, Wilander and he has ZERO USOs to show in addition to zero Wimbies; BOTTOMLINE (that cheap and jealous Sampras and some of his cheap and jealous fans refuse to acknowledge though accepted by 99% of fans) is that McEnroe/Lendl/Becker/Edberg were SPENT forces by '90-'92. Sampras was lucky to not play in the 80s
@walliegirl2 The ONLY player of significance and IN HIS PRIME after '92 among all those that you barked is Agassi. Krajicek, Stich and Rafter have inferior records to even 80s players like Leconte, Mayotte, Nystrom and Jarryd. SHITTY players like Pioline and Washington were making finals at the Wimby and the USO in the 90s not to a grinder/claycourter like Courier. Rafter was a 'late bloomer' who came in and benefited from the already weak era getting extra weak after '96 when Agassi went AWOL..
@walliegirl2 Goran was a mental midget and should have won the 95 and 98 matches against Sampras where the 1D Choker actually won more points, had mote break chances etc. P'sis was handing Sampras his a** in the 99 QF when he retired. All Sampras faced at the Wimby and USO were past his prime Becker (past prime after 90), 1D choker Goran, 'claycourtesque' baseliner Agassi, and a littany of players ranked outside the top 100.
@walliegirl2 In addition the '97 and '00 draws were UTTER jokes with Sampras facing ZERO players ranked in the top 20. Put Fed in the 90s and he wins every year from '91 to 00 as he benefits from Connors/McEnroe retiring and faces burnt-out, washed-up and way-past-their-primes Lendl/Wilander/Edberg/Becker. Of the 90s gen, Stich and Krajicek play well enough to spend most of their time outside the top 50. Fed feeds 1D choker Goran, Agassi, crappy Pioline claycourter Courier bagels and breadsticks
no other player play serve & volley like pete. And his 2nd serve is unbelievable! And you cant compare pete and roger by this game. Obviously, pete looks old and slower. BTW, other than his serve, Pete does have his super forehand and his trademark jumping smash!! A living legend!
The thing is, that Pete, at this moment, have 1 GS more to his name and that he has 50 more weeks as No 1. All the other records are in Rogers favor. And Roger isnt gonna retire any time soon. Pete never had the dominance and numbers/records Roger have atm. For example Pete never played 10 GS finals in a row, he never won 3 GS's in one year, and Roger has done that 3 times. On the wikipedia under tennis statistics you can see how many more achievements Roger have under his name. Plain and simple
Agreed, the 14 Slams record will probably be broken although I am not so sure it will happen this year.. Rafa proved he can win in Wimby too.. the 286 weeks no1 record may never be broken or may not be broken by Roger and finally the 6 year-end no1 record will certainly not be broken by Roger.. those 2 records Pete can save..
tiger woods is so annoying in this clip; it's as if he thinks he's the king! the point at 1: 54 ...roger let's pete have it- what sort of a shot was that...a backhand half-lob??

I have to agree....Sampras had MUCH tougher competition during his career than Federer has.....outside of Rafa Nadal, Roger is playing against weak pussies....Sampras in his prime would destroy Federer plain & simple....besides, Federer is a fag - with his skinny arms and faggot hair and gay white sweaters.....and American sports stars pick hotter wives....just look at Tiger Wood's and Sampras' wives....total blond foxes....now look at Federer's girlfriend....she is a bull dyke lesbian!!!

FUCK OFF U DIKWAD......federer is playing in a generation full of SHIT.....just check out the regulars when sampras was playing. U MOTHERFUCKER, a sampras in his prime would have handed federer his own ass to him on a plate.
Sampras, Federer, whatever. Did they win? Yes. But then so might a well-trained robot: boring. Agassi not only did more with less, he did it with class. Sorry if I've offended people who like to get on the bandwagon of winners -- Yankees fans, Cowboys fans...kinda soulless.
"bandwaggon of winners"? Agassi was a winner aswell. You jumped on a bandwaggon of your own too. Maybe you're souless too. They were all great players. Better to be boring, and win 5 straight Wimbledons (the REAL test of tennis players, unlike hard court).
It's bandwagon, not bandwaggon. And which bandwagon is it that I've "jumped on"? Agassi was always an underdog against Sampras and Federer, and people tend not to jump on the bandwagons of underdogs -- lest they wouldn't be underdogs (maybe you don't understand the nature of "bandwagon": in sports, it refers to the odds-on favorite; i.e., the easy choice).
Simply -- and pardon my Dr. Seuss here -- those who root for winners to win are those who jump on the bandwagon of winners (and here I've given the example of those fairweather fans who blindly fall in line behind the winners of last year's Super Bowl, etc.). I never said Agassi was "better" than Sampras (so I don't understand your "real test" comment), only that I admired him for "doing more with less".
And, gee, imagine a Brit unilaterally and arbitrarily declaring Wimbledon the "real" test of tennis. But this is good to know -- we need to pass word along and shut down the the other majors before they waste any more of our time.
Sampras in his prime was unpayable. Federer has no chance. Federer is payable in an era of tennis lacking any real talent besides Nadal who is really nothing more than a clay court specialist. Just watch the other Sampras videos of when he was playing in his time.
I think there is a video called 'Sampras perfect tennis', watch that and be amazed.
i don´t like the style of play of sampras. he looks so stiff. plus i hat the serve and volley game. federer on the other hand is beautiful to watch, so graceful. just perfect
These 2 guys are great and your comments don't mean anything. We have great players Sapras, Federer, Laver, Mac, Connors, Borg, Lendl. Hoad, Becker, Edberg, Wilander, etc. all great and all entertaining. I thank them all for all the great entertainment. You can argue forever who was best.
Pete was definitely stressed out in the first set. The expectation and the pressure to give the public what they paid for, the introduction ceremony etc... it all made it harder for him. He played more freely in the second, and could have won the third set if he had been ready to close the match. I think he didn't really want to humiliate Federer and therefore took it easy in the last few games he lost, letting Federer regain his confidence and momentum.
What a bunch of crap!!! Both are great players having fun out there. If we really want to see who is better, then we need to compare them on grass, clay or hard court. Not a super fast indoor carpet tailored to bring out serve and volley tennis to the extreme which Pete is the all time great. On the other hand, you take any other surface, Fed will destroy him.
just because you disagree and are biased doesn't make what I say crap. Sampras was stressed out in the first set and he even said it at the end. He wasn't used to deal with the pressure and expectation. He didn't have the nerves anymore.
Federer is shit. u biased cunt. Sampras played in an era full of tennis stars. Federer playing in the shittest era of tennis.
Sampras would destroy Federer, overpower him on every surface 'cept clay coz of Sampras's known health and fatigue problems but even then would probably beat Federer.
i agree is the fu·$%%·$·ing king of kings... and watch sampras vs rafter... vs agassi... vs safin... vs philipousis.. vs marcelo rios... vs tod martin omg... orgasmic match's! watch federer vs nadal... something interesting'????? :S
did you see some match of sampras of 91-94 try to compare his level with actual level of federer.... sampras is a fuc%%&% monster.... and his raquet is too heavy and his serve is so fast try to imagine what he could do with the same raquet of federer
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Compare Sampras's beautiful wife Bridget to ugly Federer's girlfriend Mirka. Federer fall in love to Bridget and that is why he is doing so often matches with Sampras lately and that is why he is so bad at the start of this season.
Pete really is amazing - I do think that Federer is the greatest player to have ever lived, but that was surprisingly close. Then again, maybe Sampras was better after all. Hmmmm....it's a toss up
Not seen this match, but I have seen those in asia... Put some money on a table, some like 1.000.000 € to the winner, and you'll see two easy set for Federer (even if Sampras still hits very well, but you also need to run on a court...)
years into retirement, pete sampras still gives the best player in the world a run for his money... the question of who the greatest player of all time is may never be settled, even if federer goes on to win over 20 grand slams.
Yah it was funny watching Safin beat Federer too. At least Pete wasnt in his prime when he lost to him. And Nadal, LOL. WOW, what Sampras would do to Nadal.
Fed was playing some of his best tennis ever in that match against sampras in 01. He said so himself and sports experts agree. He didnt consistently play like that though which is why he wasnt #1 yet. He was only a year and a half from dominating though. Just the fact that he HAD to serve and volley to win in 5 sets in 01 against pete shows theres noone today that challenges him like Sampras would have.
i disagree. federer's backhand was not strong at all back then. it could easily be attacked.his serve has also improved and most importantly he is mentally so much more stronger than he was back then.also the courts were so much more faster back then thats why he used to volley more.
No way, Federer's best tennis came in 2004 and 2005, and it was a much higher level than he played in 2001. Forehand, backhand (especially), and serve are all way better now than at the time of that match.
Not true. His backhand was one dimensional back in 01 and wasn't even a weapon back then. He since has 3 different types of backhand that are now deadly. Don't forget, Sampras had the fear factor in his favor back then as well. He was still looked at as if he was something grand. Now we all realize he wasn't, but back then no one knew someone like Roger could even exist!
im not sure which response was to my comment, but ur right his backhand wasnt quite as good as it is now, just like Pete's entire game wasnt as good as it was in the nineties . Fear factor? Overrated. My stepmom scares me too, but i could still kick her ass any day cuz shes old and tired.
Mono doesn't leave your system very fast. Most players have to take a leave of absence when they get it. Roger made it to the semis and quarters w/ mono. THAT is impressive. Its still in his system, but hopefully he will be 100% healthy when he wins ROLAND GAROS! King Rogi!
Sampras played his whole carreer with mediteranean ememia. He never mentioned it. We found out when he got illat the US Open against Correja. He also had a knee problem.
Tennis Channel will be streaming this match live online in a couple days if you missed it.
I watched the live feed as it happened cause stupid gay Comcast doesn't carry Tennis Channel.
Anywayz, luv the Good vs Evil theme, Pete being the good guy, naturally. Is that a real ProStaff 6.0 85 hes using? It looked a bit big to me, I'm thinking its a paint job of the nSix-One Tour 95 that hes been using.
Also glad Pete decided to dress for the occasion, unlike the matches in Asia.
Great match! I got the feeling that Roger was trying more than in the prior exhibitions - especially at the beginning and when Pete looked like he was about to steal the match - but he always seemed to be enjoying himself.
What I'm saying is that, opposed to the matches in Asia, where Fed just coasted through each one (even the one that he lost in Macau), Fed actually tried on two separate occasions in NYC (i.e., during the first game of the first set, with Pete leading 40-0, and at the end of the third set, with Pete leading 5 games to 2).

serve and volley is the shit.
squinty1292 3 years ago
These 2 guys are great and your comments don't mean anything. We have great players Sapras, Federer, Laver, Mac, Connors, Borg, Lendl. Hoad, Becker, Edberg, Wilander, etc. all great and all entertaining. I thank them all for all the great entertainment. You can argue forever who was best.
Schrittwieser 3 years ago 3
Pete was definitely stressed out in the first set. The expectation and the pressure to give the public what they paid for, the introduction ceremony etc... it all made it harder for him. He played more freely in the second, and could have won the third set if he had been ready to close the match. I think he didn't really want to humiliate Federer and therefore took it easy in the last few games he lost, letting Federer regain his confidence and momentum.
jmminu 3 years ago
What a bunch of crap!!! Both are great players having fun out there. If we really want to see who is better, then we need to compare them on grass, clay or hard court. Not a super fast indoor carpet tailored to bring out serve and volley tennis to the extreme which Pete is the all time great. On the other hand, you take any other surface, Fed will destroy him.
jumba146 3 years ago
just because you disagree and are biased doesn't make what I say crap. Sampras was stressed out in the first set and he even said it at the end. He wasn't used to deal with the pressure and expectation. He didn't have the nerves anymore.
jmminu 3 years ago
I will destroy you anytime!

Sampras would rape Fed on a nineties grass Wimby...
splendid1000 3 years ago
Laver would rape Sampras on 60's grass Wimby.
jumba146 3 years ago
Federer is shit. u biased cunt. Sampras played in an era full of tennis stars. Federer playing in the shittest era of tennis.
Sampras would destroy Federer, overpower him on every surface 'cept clay coz of Sampras's known health and fatigue problems but even then would probably beat Federer.

i agree is the fu·$%%·$·ing king of kings... and watch sampras vs rafter... vs agassi... vs safin... vs philipousis.. vs marcelo rios... vs tod martin omg... orgasmic match's! watch federer vs nadal... something interesting'????? :S

Do you really believe that Fed played on his highest level here? If he would, Sampras wouldn
't have a chance.

Federer was playing in his pajamas. Samprass sux. He's overrated hairy ape.

pete had no backhand
BSUkid69 3 years ago
did you see some match of sampras of 91-94 try to compare his level with actual level of federer.... sampras is a fuc%%&% monster.... and his raquet is too heavy and his serve is so fast try to imagine what he could do with the same raquet of federer
jonathan300985 3 years ago
Exactly. Nuff said

Hmmmm....it's a toss up
brycetheslice 3 years ago
Not seen this match, but I have seen those in asia... Put some money on a table, some like 1.000.000 € to the winner, and you'll see two easy set for Federer (even if Sampras still hits very well, but you also need to run on a court...)
niagos76 3 years ago 2
years into retirement, pete sampras still gives the best player in the world a run for his money... the question of who the greatest player of all time is may never be settled, even if federer goes on to win over 20 grand slams.

I love seeing Pete get beat. Beat by Safin too. And I'd love to see Nadal beat his hairy butt.
RogerAndMaria 3 years ago
Yah it was funny watching Safin beat Federer too. At least Pete wasnt in his prime when he lost to him. And Nadal, LOL. WOW, what Sampras would do to Nadal.
splendid1000 3 years ago
Yeah, Fuck Nadal, but he would destroy Pistol on that clay bullshit of a surface.

yah on clay no doubt Nadal is great

that's not any fine looking lady, that's sampras' wife bridget!
Drevi81 3 years ago
damn,. i guess that's the one match sampras has beaten federer, and will be no rematch :((( hihi
OBeymydreamz 3 years ago 2
1. Federer is so much better now than he was when he beat sampras 2001
2. sampras was so much beter in 2001 then he is now
3. its an exhibition so we wont see roger trying his best
what to do: Give sampras a wild card into wimbledon 2008 and he plays federer broadcasted to every home, best of 5 sets
thanks for posting
Elohite 3 years ago
Fed was playing some of his best tennis ever in that match against sampras in 01. He said so himself and sports experts agree. He didnt consistently play like that though which is why he wasnt #1 yet. He was only a year and a half from dominating though. Just the fact that he HAD to serve and volley to win in 5 sets in 01 against pete shows theres noone today that challenges him like Sampras would have.
splendid1000 3 years ago
Strange sense of logic...
Pamqnx 3 years ago
i disagree. federer's backhand was not strong at all back then. it could easily be attacked.his serve has also improved and most importantly he is mentally so much more stronger than he was back then.also the courts were so much more faster back then thats why he used to volley more.
stevebr 3 years ago
his serve was incredible in that match. Better than today
splendid1000 3 years ago
No way, Federer's best tennis came in 2004 and 2005, and it was a much higher level than he played in 2001. Forehand, backhand (especially), and serve are all way better now than at the time of that match.
bobomber 3 years ago
In general yah, which is why he wasnt dominating yet, but he was capable of very near prime play on occasion and he showed it in that match.
splendid1000 3 years ago
RogerAndMaria 3 years ago
im not sure which response was to my comment, but ur right his backhand wasnt quite as good as it is now, just like Pete's entire game wasnt as good as it was in the nineties . Fear factor? Overrated. My stepmom scares me too, but i could still kick her ass any day cuz shes old and tired.
splendid1000 3 years ago
To be honestly,Federer's step is not as smooth as usual I'm a little worried that he might be lost world No.1 this year.........
puzzlechess 3 years ago
Mono doesn't leave your system very fast. Most players have to take a leave of absence when they get it. Roger made it to the semis and quarters w/ mono. THAT is impressive. Its still in his system, but hopefully he will be 100% healthy when he wins ROLAND GAROS! King Rogi!
RogerAndMaria 3 years ago
How the fuck can you support the great Fed and Sharapova? Sharapova's tennis style is the anti-thesis of Feds.
CleckleysProof 3 years ago
Sampras played his whole carreer with mediteranean ememia. He never mentioned it. We found out when he got illat the US Open against Correja. He also had a knee problem.

madison square garden sold out crowd, sampras vs federer broadcasted live on the TENNIS channel and they couldn't make it a 5-set match???

Tennis Channel will be streaming this match live online in a couple days if you missed it.
I watched the live feed as it happened cause stupid gay Comcast doesn't carry Tennis Channel.
Anywayz, luv the Good vs Evil theme, Pete being the good guy, naturally. Is that a real ProStaff 6.0 85 hes using? It looked a bit big to me, I'm thinking its a paint job of the nSix-One Tour 95 that hes been using.
Also glad Pete decided to dress for the occasion, unlike the matches in Asia.

Great match! I got the feeling that Roger was trying more than in the prior exhibitions - especially at the beginning and when Pete looked like he was about to steal the match - but he always seemed to be enjoying himself.
stallieboy 3 years ago
you kidding? He was toying too much..playing to the crowds desire to have a challenging prolonged match...and it got him in trouble in the 3rd set.
xman4un 3 years ago
Looked to me like after he won the first set without even being tested that he started trying less, perhaps out of respect to Pete and the crowd.
bobomber 3 years ago
What I'm saying is that, opposed to the matches in Asia, where Fed just coasted through each one (even the one that he lost in Macau), Fed actually tried on two separate occasions in NYC (i.e., during the first game of the first set, with Pete leading 40-0, and at the end of the third set, with Pete leading 5 games to 2).
