Speaking as to an over-the-top musical creativity I'd say The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album was a breakout, Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced" was a breakout, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" was a breakout, RUSH's 2112 was a complete breakout!
Something that made the 70's so damned enjoyable was the musical breakthroughs we experienced on a regular basis. There was nothing like 2112 before it's release. The science fiction story line told in highly progressive, hard rock, space rock, rock opera style made for an incredible concept album.

Doesn't make the guitar any less fun though, does it? I know playing Guitar Hero isn't cool, but let's face it, neither is guitar unless you're in a band. If you just play it on your own for the sake of it you're cliched and basically wasting your time. The amount of people I know who took up real guitar as an instrument because they wanted to look cool... At least no one ever played GH to try and become popular.

@MRec1124 i no this comment in particular is 4 weeks old, but GH Drums are nothing compared to real drums. im not a real drummer, i messed around with a set actully just this past weekend. its way diferent. the pedal for the high hat, different sounds on percossions/snare/cymbols. however the bass pedal is very close.

so I've finally figured out why I don't like this song. It's taht they're trying to tell a story, and the parts where they actually sing are great. But its the 15 minutes of filler that kills me, the long drawn out guitar solos that start to repeat....Cut those out and add a couple of more verses and it would be great.
@bobthecrushr well the underlying meaning of the song is how the bands' previous album before 2112, caress of steel, was pretty much rejected by fans and critics alike ( i dont know why, its an amazing album) so they thought it was the end and decided to go out with a bang. but this album is what bought them their musical freedom from the record company (lucky for us, eh?)
Some of the most sensitive, anguished, expressive guitar solos ever played. This album is so fucking cool. I always connected it with Ayn Rand, but only today I actuallly looked it up and found that the band openly acknowledged her influence. That makes them all the more genius. And "Anthem" records. Duh.

Oh, please. I'm not a great fan of angry internet yelling rampages, but when I see hypocrisy, I have to jump in. There isn't a single apostrophe in your comment, an no capital letters apart from in Maneklridus's name. I wouldn't care normally (I understand people have better things to do than perfect their grammar on the internet), but if you're going to insult him, at least spellcheck what you write.

Doesn't make the guitar any less fun though, does it? I know playing Guitar Hero isn't cool, but let's face it, neither is guitar unless you're in a band. If you just play it on your own for the sake of it you're cliched and basically wasting your time. The amount of people I know who took up real guitar as an instrument because they wanted to look cool... At least no one ever played GH to try and become popular.

People that learn to play guitar to be in a band are cliched, the people that play because they enjoy it aren't wasting their time. They play because it relaxes them, or it challenges them, or maybe it's just a hobby, but they play for their own reasons, not to be cool, like those people that set out to play so they can be in a band.

@andymci2 And people who play for their own reasons might get really good on their own, and end up with an amazing band. So all the people you know that took up guitar decided to play so they would look cool, well you're hanging out with losers. My brother learned to play because he legitimately liked it, and he's more talented than any other guitarist I've seen. It's a waste of time as much as reading's a waste of time.

My point was just that, in a lot of cases, playing Guitar Hero because it's fun is no less valid than playing guitar to look cool, although that is not what happens in all cases, just in a few. Sorry for wasting your time with that big rant :p.

@MRec1124 i no this comment in particular is 4 weeks old, but GH Drums are nothing compared to real drums. im not a real drummer, i messed around with a set actully just this past weekend. its way diferent. the pedal for the high hat, different sounds on percossions/snare/cymbols. however the bass pedal is very close.

Guitar is a hobby, guitar hero is a hobby, they both take skill and attention to rythm, they both need practice and you can record music with both. its just an electronic (simplified) guitar, its very similar to comparing a keyboard to a piano

so I've finally figured out why I don't like this song. It's taht they're trying to tell a story, and the parts where they actually sing are great. But its the 15 minutes of filler that kills me, the long drawn out guitar solos that start to repeat....Cut those out and add a couple of more verses and it would be great.

@bobthecrushr well the underlying meaning of the song is how the bands' previous album before 2112, caress of steel, was pretty much rejected by fans and critics alike ( i dont know why, its an amazing album) so they thought it was the end and decided to go out with a bang. but this album is what bought them their musical freedom from the record company (lucky for us, eh?)

Some of the most sensitive, anguished, expressive guitar solos ever played. This album is so fucking cool. I always connected it with Ayn Rand, but only today I actuallly looked it up and found that the band openly acknowledged her influence. That makes them all the more genius. And "Anthem" records. Duh.
Thanks for posting this excellent stuff. I wish people would listen to the words, read Ayn Rand, and make some connections. We are all enslaved, just as she and Rush knew.

man, I've been a Rush fan since 13 (1983) . 2112 Just does it for me. Three clever musicians. Think of having a 5 point ring in a circle between my thumb and for finger. Have a rounden enembilinn in the same place (Anonymous symbel) on my other hand.
