  • showed this to a friend, his response "robert, you fey genius bastard"

  • One of the songs that made the 80's a great decade in music.

  • Tracey Thorn sings on this?

  • "I said it before. Do I have to say it again?" One of the best albums ever recorded - and I know alot!

  • I think the people didn't get the Head Full of Steam when they didn't like this. I love this song.

  • get fucked... grant looks like a cutie in this clip and that disturbs me

  • sooooooo STRAIGHT - this video! :)))))))

    He's really cute BTW :)

  • Sounds like Tracy Thorn, doesn't it?

  • @Fnarf It is! :)

  • The height of camp but a fantastic Go-B's classic, to be sure. McLennan and Forster were the 80's Crosby and Nash.... extremely good and extremely underrated.

  • The message is obvious. Another amazing video and song. Thanks for sharing

  • Magic :)

  • Robert's so funny!!!

  • Pure genius. I think I remember Robert saying at the time he was taking the piss out of Prince.

  • I come back to this video periodically - it keeps on giving. Sometimes I think "what the hell were they thinking?" but mostly it's "Godlike genius; nice belly button; McLennan makes a most excellent girl", etc

  • My favorite Go-Betweens song. Reminds me of my high school and college years. VIdeo's a bit strange though.

  • Tracey Thorn from EBTG is doing the backing vocals on the chorus. They were a dream of a band. the go-betweens i mean

  • saw this on new york noise

  • Grant makes a great lass, eh?

  • I actually like this video clip more than any of their others so far. Robert looks so HOT in this !!!!! i can't stop drooling!!

  • wow.. just came across this.. great song even though the singer freaks me out.

  • great band, album, everything...

I wish we could still listen to that nice bands...

    guitars at their best...

I wish Grant was still around too...

  • Excellent song from one of the top albums of the 80`s. The video is just plain awful. Good stuff! I got this album on it´s release and still it is one of my absolute favourites. Never seen the video before. I´m not sure if I´m completely happy with having seen it but hey sometimes you´ve gotta live on the edge (of good taste that is).

  • the interaction between Robert and Grant at about 2.18 is PRICELESS! :D

  • i wanna borrow that top....no i don't! it's cute on robert though, somehow.

  • Let me borrow that top! Your not even wearing it!

  • i love the tunes these guys made its so nice

  • Great video - hilarious. Tracey Thorn (Everything But the Girl) on backing vocals on this tune too.

  • totally awesome

  • Is Grant in this video?

Is the bass player Robert Vickers-not sure.

  • Yeah, Grant is the blond babe playing the guitar.

  • Um, so, is Robert saying something about himself with his get-up he's wearing here?

  • Spoofing Prince, maybe?

  • THE VERY BEST

  • One of the greatest bands ever, I feel sorry for anyone who wasted the eighties singing the praises of The (over rated)Smiths when they could have been listening to some real quality like the GB's

  • Lol! You are SO right! Along with Nick Cave, The GBs are Australia's greatest! RIP Grant also.

  • rude rude rude

  • Oh, I doubt that the GBs would agree that the Smiths are overrated. There was some cross-influence.

Over the same 3 or 4 years in the 1980s, the Smiths, by my reckoning, produced 30 pop masterpieces, and the GBs produced about 20. For which I'll always be grateful.

The GBs didn't get the recognition of course.

  • No reason why one couldn't sing the praises of both (oh, plus the Trffids of course); I was (still am) a big fan of both. The GB's music have aged better though but this is purely subjective I know.

  • remember watching them play this one balmy summer afternoon at glastonbury 86, stunning set one of the best live bands ever. Amanda looked beautiful.

  • There was actually a live version of this song, recorded from a UK TV show on YouTube until recently. I loved that version! Can we please have it back?

  • One wonders who the woman is who appears at the end to lead Robert offstage? I briefly thought his current wife Karin - but then it occurred to me that, at this time, he was seeing Lindy still.

  • And, of course, there is the vocal accompaniment of Miss Tracy Thorn to add still more distaff brilliance.

  • Robert at his eccentric best and Grant looking so svelte in drag - terrific vid, sublime masterpiece.

  • Personally, I think the best drag in the video is Lindy - another classic female female impersonator. :)

  • ..didn't realize robert's kinda look queer..or androgynous...nevertheless great band..one of the best of all time...

  • Oh man, I'm only just getting into The Go-Betweens and I found out Lindy teaches at the TAFE I was at last year. Pretty rad.

  • Cross between Perry Farrell and Eddie Argos.

  • so there's where brett anderson stole the look from

  • Reminds me of Nick Cave's Stagger Lee which came 10 years later so nice one Robert!

  • Never seen Robert Forster looking so good. Feeling strangely aroused after watching this vid

  • THIS SORT OF "SENSE OF HUMOUR" WOULD BE APPLAUDED THESE DAYS ..BUT I REMEMBER PIOUS TYPES BEING ENRAGED BY THIS IN 1986..NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS' "STAGGER LEE" VIDEO CERTAINLY OWE S A DEBT (THOSE AUSTRALIANS)...
