The height of camp but a fantastic Go-B's classic, to be sure. McLennan and Forster were the 80's Crosby and Nash.... extremely good and extremely underrated.
I come back to this video periodically - it keeps on giving. Sometimes I think "what the hell were they thinking?" but mostly it's "Godlike genius; nice belly button; McLennan makes a most excellent girl", etc
Excellent song from one of the top albums of the 80`s. The video is just plain awful. Good stuff! I got this album on it´s release and still it is one of my absolute favourites. Never seen the video before. I´m not sure if I´m completely happy with having seen it but hey sometimes you´ve gotta live on the edge (of good taste that is).
One of the greatest bands ever, I feel sorry for anyone who wasted the eighties singing the praises of The (over rated)Smiths when they could have been listening to some real quality like the GB's
Oh, I doubt that the GBs would agree that the Smiths are overrated. There was some cross-influence.
Over the same 3 or 4 years in the 1980s, the Smiths, by my reckoning, produced 30 pop masterpieces, and the GBs produced about 20. For which I'll always be grateful.
No reason why one couldn't sing the praises of both (oh, plus the Trffids of course); I was (still am) a big fan of both. The GB's music have aged better though but this is purely subjective I know.
There was actually a live version of this song, recorded from a UK TV show on YouTube until recently. I loved that version! Can we please have it back?
One wonders who the woman is who appears at the end to lead Robert offstage? I briefly thought his current wife Karin - but then it occurred to me that, at this time, he was seeing Lindy still.
THIS SORT OF "SENSE OF HUMOUR" WOULD BE APPLAUDED THESE DAYS ..BUT I REMEMBER PIOUS TYPES BEING ENRAGED BY THIS IN 1986..NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS' "STAGGER LEE" VIDEO CERTAINLY OWE S A DEBT (THOSE AUSTRALIANS)...
showed this to a friend, his response "robert, you fey genius bastard"

My favorite Go-Betweens song. Reminds me of my high school and college years. VIdeo's a bit strange though.

Tracey Thorn from EBTG is doing the backing vocals on the chorus. They were a dream of a band. the go-betweens i mean

And, of course, there is the vocal accompaniment of Miss Tracy Thorn to add still more distaff brilliance.

Robert at his eccentric best and Grant looking so svelte in drag - terrific vid, sublime masterpiece.
fourteenbellbirds 4 years ago
Personally, I think the best drag in the video is Lindy - another classic female female impersonator. :)

..didn't realize robert's kinda look queer..or androgynous...nevertheless great band..one of the best of all time...
