I believe the song is a friend telling a friend that despites of what happened in the past (or between them)...you should live it all behind and start it new with the Lord.

you can look at it as tobymac talking to a good friend who has left his life because of mistakes he feels ashamed of. "you know i had love for you that's bigger than mistakes...let the ghosts of your past rest..." forget what happened, love forgives and moves on. who cares about the time lost? love picks up where it left off. "this is the first day of the rest of your life"
