Basically later in fishman island you get told that Aokiji was supposed to be the next fleet admiral but Sakazuki was like nah im better than you so I should be the next fleet admiral. Apparently they had a large fight and Sakazuki won. This caused Aokiji to leave the marines because he didnt want to work under Sakazuki so it's possible that Aokiji could become homies with luffy now ^_^
