Having driven both the cars on the same road in the same day-- I'll take the MX-5 over the Mini Cooper-S (I drove supercharged 2005) any day.
In the USA the NC Miata or MX-5 has 170bhp (130Kw), not 160.
According to Wikipedia (can't find another source) the Turbo Mini-S has 175 METRIC HP (129 Kw)
So it is heavier, slightly less power-- uses a turbo which means you have to be higher rev to gain power meaning standing launch and use up clutch OR slow standing start.
On top of all of this, you can buy a 2006 MX-5 dirt cheap-- the Miata is the 3rd most dependable car EVER. Drop about $5,000 on a total supercharger kit and raise the peak hp at the wheels to 240 and torque at the wheels to 202
Having driven the 2005 Supercharged Mini (sc is more reliable and gives better power increase as it evenly raises power instead of spools it in a certain range) and the stock MX-5: I purchased an MX-5 and love it.
@skluef It's the John Cooper Works edition that puts out 210, not the S model. As for the other comments, we can argue back & forth about which is better, it simply boils down to personal taste. They are both fun cars, neither being a true sports car and both have a slightly feminine feel. Sorry if that hurts anyones feelings, but I have a Cooper S Cabrio, so I'm allowed to say that. If u want real speed, buy an M4 or Cobra. If u want real fun without breaking the bank, buy either of these cars
In this weight/power class, a fwd will usually be faster than a rwd over a short sprint. The back end is much more stable in the fwd so you can step on the gas earlier. Also the Mazda is underdamped from the factory, the chassis feels restless over bumps and through quick esses. Aftermarket shocks and springs make a huge difference in the way the car drives.
