I just went through U-505 in Chicago this weekend. Some of the round interior hatches had been cut into square openings so that people could get through for the tour I guess. Still better than cutting the boat up into pieces. I still plan on seeing the boat in Liverpool as well, hopefully next summer. What I wouldn't do for a ride on one of these, like maybe even a Trans-Atlantic crossing!
I want to visit this next summer as I'm planning to be in Liverpool, but I must say I would have never cut the vessel up for display purposes. I'm only about 4 hours from Chicago, so I think I'll check out U-505 on display there in one piece! I'm told they give 15 minute guided tours through the entire u-boat.
can you believe they cut it up because of an act supporting wheelcchair access bs. The last time I checked I didn't see too many submariners enlisting while in wheelchairs. What a disgrace cutting up a monument so a fn wheelchair can fit.
To destroy this wonderful piece of history because someone in a wheelchair might not get in is crazy... somethings in life you just can't have if you are disabled and this is a prime example!!
If someone in a wheel chair wanted to get into a WWII submarine they should get in just like a person in a wheelchair did in 1945. Enjoy the experience as it was designed - not as a rolo.
Actually, I suffer from ipobrichiophobia, it's a disability you know. I demand this sub be made accessible to me! The sub should have been made into pancake... Get the steamroller out.
When it says [now that it's been cut into 5 pieces] "allows visitors to see inside as never before", does that mean better than when I actually stood inside and walked its entire length? I don't think so.
BTW Sannamabitz, it's in England because the original guide told me that the Danish government didn't want it there.
I'm all for the preservation of this rare U-boat and making it available to a wider public but I think it's a disgrace that it's been cut into 5 pieces.
I was lucky enough to visit it in about 2001 when it was still in one piece and taken for a guided tour (there were only 2 of us) inside its entire length. It was a beautiful ship, full of 'ghosts' (in the nicest sense of the word)....a very humbling experience.

Cut into 5 sections!? Disgusting!
What other historical items are being cut up?
Tell the truth... nobody could fit through the hatch and buy a burger from McDonalds inside.
Pffft!

I`m going to visit the exhibition. I was under the impression that when it was in one piece no one could get near it.
At least (5 pieces or not) it hasn`t been scrapped.

Probably not and I don`t think it should have been chopped up to suit the Disability Discrimination Act but it was.
