Greil could have totally beat the black knight if he had done one thing and hadn't done another thing: had done: used ragnell. hadn't done: severed the tendons in his sword arm. after all, he did (SPOILERS HERE) teach the black knight everything he knew...

With an axe, you have two hands, whereas with a sword, you need to have perfect control with just one.
