american airlines had to evacuate a plane the other day. but no body heard why. i know why. my sisters boyfriend was filling the plane up and the pump for the gas caught on fire. they evacuated the plane and they put the fire out before it became a bomb. (its a gas truck). but it took the airport fire dept 5 minutes to get out there. and they had the fire controlled before that. somebody's ass is in trouble for that one. shows you how crappy the real world is.

@Chaseman56 Well I'm not an expert but I believe it is used to provide air circulation for the aircraft. Possibly also to provide air conditioning in the aircraft while at the gate.

@Cessna154 Yeah it's an exterior air conditioner...They probably need them after what happened to TWA flight 800. If you're unfamiliar with that flight, it exploded because of a short circuit on the gas measurer in the tank because of vapourized gas that was heated by the A/C systems to flashpoint, as well as a high voltage electricity jump to the low voltage wire going to the gas tank. There's a Seconds From Disaster episode on it if you want to see.

@Cessna154 Just right. Not just the air coditioning circulation but also Externala air plug. To help provide air power, with also the APU to raise the PSI to help start the engines

You need a separate piece of equipment called an air-start, which hooks up underneath the fuselage, a bit farther forward... If you notice the piece of equipment positioned next to the GPU, that is what provides the external bleed air.

Sometimes APU has a malfunction and then we have to request one of those. they can start the engine's etc with it. or just use it as replacement on the ground for the APU. at alot airports you have to shut down your APU during turn-around
