  • Epic flanging effect on Mike's guitar during his epic solo. Daryl Stuermer adding some funky bass guitar riffs which was not on the studio version. Chester, Daryl and Tony carry this version. Mike hit one bum note on 6:57 but other than that rocked. Phil made up for his vocal delivery (voice kept cracking, he also goofed the lyrics on "In the Cage") with one of the best drum performances.

  • Really like the sound of Collins drums here

  • The Boys are a legend, don't put them down! ****** They were way ahead of their time with the equipment they had to work with. Just imagine them coming out now with all the hi-tech stuff! it wouldn't be the same.

  • sorry....just genesis

  • The band Abacabb is better than this.

  • Why is it I can no longer find the Turn it On Again live from this particular concert? To me it is their best version of the song. Yet it's nowhere to be found on here.

  • @Msumner316 Youtube removed it on here because the audio matches the same concert as the one found on the album version.

  • @Msumner316

there is a disco called "three sides live" in which you can find this version. I agree with you: this is the best version of this song-

  • 6: 55 Mike: Ups.... Oh, well, nobody will notice.

  • Easily one of the hardest rocking tracks the Gen boys ever did.

  • Doing it again Genesis!!

Giving my ears the food thet need to whitstand all the stupid sound from Goverment, president, political suckers and so on =)

    Hare Krishna

  • yeah,what hare said!

  • I love the instrumental portion in the second half of this video. The vintage synths, the dual drummers, the fine guitar work. It would be hard to mistake that sound for any other band.

  • ita all about chester..

  • those drums are banging

  • My kids will learn from this video-Toni is age 4.5. She already won a few drum sticks from music raffles.

  • love this song a lot...

  • Tony Banks on keys, Mike Rutherford on guitar and Phil singing. What more do you expect? Fantastic performance.

  • wow Tony Banks was very sexy in this show...

  • A Masterpiece.

  • Sheer sexy. Love

  • Excellent and complexed song!

  • What's up with Phil playing pocket pool?

  • If you are not flying around 6:20......

  • people 4get how bid phil was - is -

same with John Cougar Melloncamp and Hall and Oats - OR how about Led Zepplin Tears for Fears - Prince - Michael - Madonna - Elton - Rod - Freddy - they all had their time!

    Lets not forget the king!

    E L V I S !

  • Tony at 5:09 looks like Jon Cryer from 2 AND A HALF MEN.

  • ABACAB was the last great GENESIS album.

  • He he so nice

  • phil sounds great on this! i agree abacab is a great album,i think this(abacab)and duke are there best as a three piece.after that i think they had 5 great songs on all albums combined

  • The best album of the Collins Era is.......Abacab ;)

  • Good Job To them

Look Forward to Seeing them in the Rock Hall Of Fame, 2010

    Peace and Love From Me:)

  • The lyrics sound like someone is doing "lines" of cocaine on a mirror or glass. Also like someone is desparate to find their stash.

  • The version on 3 Sides Live was way better than the studio recording. The extended closing section is mindbending brilliance.

  • I don't know what's up with Phil's vocals on this performance, but on The Invisible Touch Tour AKA "Live at Wembley Stadium" it's perfect, that was a seriously kickass show.

  • Wow! I have such great memories from this tour ~ Thanks for posting this!!

  • Phil's voice struggles a bit in places. Did they do overdubs for the album?

  • The album version was performed on another date. The one on the album was from 12-23-81 in england where this version is from 11-29-81 and phil was struggling a bit that night. in fact, mostly everything on Three Sides Live isnt from the video version.

  • Dodo/Lurker, Abacab and In the Cage medley are from Birmingham NEC. TIOA, BTL, Duchess and Me and Sarah Jane are from Nassau Coliseum. Follow You Follow Me was from Lyceum 1980. Three Sides Live was so named here in the US for its fourth studio side was the UK 3X3 EP (Paperlate, You Might Recall and Me and Virgil) plus the two Duke B-sides (Evidence of Autumn and Open Door). The UK got live readings of One For the Vine (1980), Fountain of Salmacis (1978) and It/Watcher of the Skies (1976)

  • @PhilGenesisDB

Darned, that will teach me not to read before posting :-(

    Right on, thanks!

  • @fendweller

he doesnt struggle. it's called rocknroll. :-)

  • @fendweller this is the actual sound without all the studio magic.

  • @fendweller

I just realize It's not the same version that they use for the album, maybe this was from a different night but there's obvious differences between this video of three sides live and the actual album.

    At least for this song.

  • @fendweller So what if it's not spot on dude. This is one of the best Genesis songs ever and Three Sides Live is one of the greatest albums ever man. Does it really matter if they mixed and moshed things?? I remember as a kid, riding my bike 5 miles to a local record shop to buy Three sides Live with my lawn mowing money. Don't ruin my childhood memory by say Phil's voice was a little off. So what if it was? When you were 12 years old, it didn't matter!

  • @Burke68 it's not off. it's very hard to sing those high notes and in the live element he wasn't off, it just cracked a little in places where phil usually has excellent control, but it's rock and roll, and genesis were one of the best.

  • According to Genesis bandmate Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins can't properly play drums nor piano nor write songs now. PC's right hand still bothers him after he had neck and spinal surgery at the conclusion of the Turn It On Again Tour in 2007 to correct some back damage. On top of that, PC is now deaf in one ear. These sad development officially ends Genesis. If Phil Collins can regain his strength to play drums again then we may see one last Genesis gig. If not, they ended with the 2007 tour.

  • Brought Up With This Stuff,My Uncle 'KIDDO' Kidson Played Nowt Else,Pissed Myself When i First Saw Him Hoovering The Stage On The 3 Sides Live Video,Great For Backstage Passes,Especially On The Mama Tour 84 NEC Birmingham UK. Ex AC/DC Stage Manager, Now Retired To Marbella,Cheers KIDDO, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think the version from the Mama tour is the best... I've never been too keen on this version. Maybe they hadn't played it enough times to really stretch out on it...

  • This is good.

  • love this song. wonder though, what the synth he plays for the synth solos? doesn't look like a jupiter 8

  • I love the Wembley concert version of Abacab (Especially the funky instrumental) but this version of Abacab is more true to the original & still my favorite. The tone of Mike's guitar & his playing really sounds phenomenal here.

  • @vodude I hate to say, but Mike hits a really bum note at 6.57.

  • rutherford = better than eric clapton

  • are you serieus??

    i'm a huge genesis fan!!

I've got many live dvd's from them.

But rutherford sucks compare to eric clapton!

I've you compare eric clapton or daryl stuermer to rutherford, rutherfor is a pusy then...

  • No.

  • you have the right to think that...

  • He's alright on the guitar. NOthing special, nevertheless, pretty good.

If anything, BAss was his specialty.

I believe he's even said that before

YOu cant compare clapton & rutherford.

    Apples & oranges my friend.

  • that's true

he isn't bad but not that good

    it's still good music!! :-)

Apples & oranges my friend?? --> very funny dude! ;-)

  • Mike is a decent rock guitarist. However, he is a lengedary rock bassist.

  • @boongg It's amazing the amount of bassists in the industry list him as a major influence. From Geddy Lee, to Steve Harris of Iron Maiden (Mike DID play one of the first "Mosh bass lines" in "Supper's Ready") ;) and many many others.

  • Abacab sounds like a Phil Collins solo album, rather than Genesis. It has always been my least favourite Genesis album.

  • With all due respect, I can't agree that Abacab sounds like a Phil Collins album. No Reply at All and Man on the Corner maybe, but can you imagine Phil doing Dodo/Lurker or Me and Sarah Jane (or for that matter, an extended ROCK instrumental solo like at the end of the song Abacab) on one of his solo albums? On the other hand, as soon as I heard Invisible Touch/Throwing it All Away/In Too Deep I pined for the "good old days" of Abacab

  • You are of course right in saying that Abacab doesn´t sound exactly like a P. Collins-album, but there is much more Phil in Abacab, compared to Duke, the Mama-album, etc., and that´s the reason why i dislike this album. I´m a Genesis fan, but i believe that Abacab was one big mistake. I think that Mike & Tony was so overwhelmed by the succes of Face value that they allowed more of Phil´s ideas on this album. -Like the awful horn section on No reply...

  • Comment removed

  • I didn't like No reply at all at first, I hated the fact theat Genesis had a Horn section in any of their songs..........................but then, i dont know how, but it actually grew on me. NOw I really dont mind it, i'l hear it every now & then. But yea, this album does that "phil-ness" all over it, more than some other ones......

  • I disagree - this is poor by Mike's standards. In fact, it's not a great version of Abacab - Wembley is far superior. As for Firth of Fifth, I can see Mike doing a good job of it, but not as good as Daryll!

  • Not much emotion in the Wembley version. Here you have Mike on fire.

  • FUCK emotion. You don´t need emotion for it to sound good. And the Wembley version sounds GOOD, emotion or not.

  • Mike is on fire during this guitar solo!

  • If I had to choose one guitarist in my rock band, I would take Mike anytime! I just love his solos!!

  • @MisterQuebec What about Mike Rutherford vs Steve Hackett? Who'd you pick then? :)

  • From 6:22: Best Rutherford's solo ever. Just perfect. Sometimes harsh, sometimes romantic. Sour and sweet!

  • You're right. This is his best solo. Very Floyd type of sound.

  • I wish I could hear him playing Firth of Fifht solo. I'm positive it would sound better than Darryl.

  • genesis ya no ya!!! es lo maximo!!!

  • absolut great

    thanks for posting

  • nice thx for the vid

  • Oooohhh my all time favorite Genesis song, no doubt. :)

  • Apocalypse in 4/4.

  • Filthy and DELICIOUS!
