where i live there's a restaurant in 60s style and there's a jukebox , man i spent 20 bux of pocket money on that song ! I'll never regret ...........
@CubeableGame I've heard this classic song played on the radio a lot, I love it, I didn't realise it was played on a broken amplifier though, I love distorted sounds ever so much, if this is where the birth of distorted sounds came from, I appreciate this song even more now!
@lilyeve222 The Kinks' guitarist Dave Davies, sliced the speaker cone on the amplifier with a razor blade and poked it with a pin to get that signature sound. Few years later, the already invented fuzz pedal became popular with players such as Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page.
@hardcorexplotion Not far from reality: "Distortion gained widespread popularity after guitarist Dave Davies of The Kinks used a razor blade to slash his speaker cones for the 1964 single "You Really Got Me"." [wikipedia]

For a song that's supposedly so "easy" to play, I've NEVER heard a decent cover of it (by which I mean retaining the punch and energy of the original). People seem to really underestimate it and screw up the execution.
You don't have to be playing 300 notes a second to make a song good. The primal caveman-like quality distinguished it from most other popular music of its time, while also being (undoubtedly deliberate)...It took Davies' writing from wannabe blues to pure proto-Stooges rock.
there's a lot of history behind this song.. did you know this was the first song ever recorded to use distortion? i don't think the Kinks can take credit for discovering distortion, but what they did was take a pencil and poke holes in their amps.

Late seventies for Van Halen you mean. This was sixty four or sixty five. Apparently Dave ripped a whole in his amp to get that effect.
