For SMV; I like Stanley 1st, Marcus a close 2nd and Victor a distant 3rd. In my overall bass players in modern history list I would rate Jaco Pastorious 2nd and Louis Johnson 3rd, with Stanley at the top!
all you Marcus Miller haters out there sayin how you play just as good as him and how overated he is, Marcus is a producer composer and musican , the man has his own style of groove and distinctive tone and a "professional" that career that began in the mid seventies appeared in over 500 albums and won numerous grammys so just because Marcus suceeded where you haters failed u can't fault him for his achievements because your just wasting your time
sure vic is a very good bassist but marcus is much more better, u can distinguish his playing way clearly... his melody his soul also he not only played for the man who has most influence on 20th century, but also he composed for him. (miles davis), vic is being followed by nowadays generatinos who like a lot of show off and speed.. sorry boys music is not a sport it is an art ! saludos al gran maestro stanley clarke !

marcus can play but he gets to be annoying after while with the never-ending slap thing. trying to find something by him that's more melodic & interesting to the ear.
Marcus can play melodic but the slapping is his trademark besides the that what the people in the audience like to hear and they dont seem to mind the slapping, their cheering him on constantly, he's just giving them thier monies worth and he's done alright his slapping these last 30+ years

I'll go through iTunes to see if I like anything. The last time someone let me hold one of his cds I just didn't care for it at all. Sorry Marcus fans. And I love slap bass but this cat is over rated for sure. But you guys continue to enjoy.
over rated he is. good musician though. he plays the sax too if u don't know. surely vic is way better. levels away in melody, phrasings, harmony, theory, skills, technique and everything than Marcus Miler.though i enjoyed Milelr last year with SMV,i have to say that he tends to be tiring after a while.
Victor & Marcus two totally different players. Marcus wows you with his tone, grooves, writing ability. Victor wows you with his ability to do what ever he wants with that bass & makes it look so easy. Hands down Victor is the best bass player out there. Can't see to many cats being better. But, Marcus is definetly not overrated. He is a hell of a bass player but , musically he's probably one of the baddest cats out there. Check out his resume.
Well I'd be amazed too if my slap skills weren't up to par. I started playing in the mid 70's and was doing what Marcus is doing back in those days. Been there and done that. My son sees videos of me from the 80's and says "man, you slapped on everything, even slow songs". But that was in at the time. I barely slap at all now days. I got to give one thing to Marcus though. He's managed to keep a huge following all these years.
Watch out! Those downward thumbs will be coming after you next.
I use to use Rotosounds. They were very popular back then. Now days I mainly use D'addarios nickel plated. I've just recently tried for the first time some DR Extra Life strings. They are nice and have a softer feel to them (the tension feels looser). The DR's B string has the best tone from any B I've ever played.
Every brotha in the neighborhood was slappin back in the day. But the difference is Marcus perfected it. Marcus was playing professionally at about 16yrs old. Marcus's writing & producing skills, is even better than his playing. That's what took Marcus to a another level. Also Marcus is probably one of the only bassist out there that is called, to do himself. Cause not only is his tone second to none but, his goove is devastating. When it come to groovin, noones better.
God... I wanna kill that guy singing "Dada dadaaa dada dadaaa dada dadaadaadaadaadaa" during the whole Jam! Nobody likes those idiots! If you know a song - keep it for your fucking self!
yeah if you listen to his rendition of giant steps he does that method, which is using the side of his thumb to whack the end of the board and slide down towards the nut. The book is really interesting by the way, i recommend it!
i almost got a wah pedal for my birthday, but a trusted advisor told me that it doesn't sound good with a bass...i shouldve gotten that wah pedal.....
yea but a wah won't turn you into Marcus Miller...he's playing through one hell of a rig too...IMO loop stations are much more useful than effects with bass...once you have a loop then its fun to mess with effects

i was reading a chapter on Jaco in Bass Player's "fretless bass" book which said he never used it. whatever though
Bowser28 2 years ago
Oh how is that book? Just heard about it and looked into getting it.
Anyway yes, I stand corrected by ejlarsonstratford's comment.

yeah jaco was repulsed by slap bass, he never did it on a single recording
Bowser28 3 years ago
I've heard he did it on at least one of the Word of Mouth recordings, but I'm not sure which one...
rarisgod 2 years ago
we didnt do slap with the thumb but he would just hit the end of the fingerboard a bit.
