THIS is the version I grew up with. I loved this game- never beat it- but I loved it dearly. Wish I could find it again for mac.

When you start playing Maniac Mansion within Day of the Tentacle, my recollection is that you are trapped in that former game, and can't return to the sequel, until you've completed it!

Actually, there is a way to go back to day of the tentacle. I can't remember how right now though. Oh well! The fact is, MANIAC MANSION OWNS!!!!!
