Strabiliante !!!
and this year the set piece of the senior orchestra in the Hong Kong School Music Festival is the whole introduction of Firebird PLUS the Inferno Dance!!! isnt that crazy
I like the manic, maddening energy gergiev imbues in this piece. It's one of the best I've heard. Too bad Stravinsky isn't one of his favourite composers. I think Prokofief is if I;m not mistaken.
it's most interesting comparing this recording with the one by boulez from 2010... it's mostly the same musicians but so different completely! boulez definitely doesn't show any emotion while conducting and gergiev, well... but it looks like the musicians play so much more emotional with boulez and i also like boulez' tempo better! it looks like gergiev want to do a special interpretation which doesn't work that well...
@simwest7834 i haven't heard many interpretations of this song so maybe i just dont know, but i dont really hear it as a giant mess. could u possibly elaborate on this so i can better understand what u mean?
I play bassoon, and the soloist in this video just didn't do it for me. He didn't go anywhere with the phrase, he was just blowing notes and vibrato. Any thoughts?
@TheBassoonchk My impression is that much of the whole orchestra was doing the same ... down to the conductor? I have yet to hear the version by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with the charismatic Andris Nelsons conducting. I watched him work the Birmingham orchestra the other day on a live BBC Proms broadcast at The Albert Hall in London. They work as an extension of his arm and body movements and facial expression - it is quite a remarkable sight and the outcome is sensational.
@trevjr as a freshman in highschool I was the top scorer in the state, however, as it is only my second year of high school, I have yet had the time to audition for a bigger orchestra. As part of my lessons, my teacher and I analyze pieces such as this. (Not on youtube, but recordings he has of orchestras) these were simply my thoughts on the performance. :)
@TheBassoonchk not the best not the worst by no means... I enjoyed the way he phrased it, it was a little different from the rest of the interpretations i've heard, but different isn't always better. I personally like other interpretations, but this one is definately something i would listen to over and over again
I have a question to trumpet players. As far as valves go, is there preference to rotary valves in a way like "oh it makes my tone a little brighter". Basically what I'm asking is why would someone pick one over the other as a trumpet player. Me being a tuba player, there is a debate over rotary and pistons. For example rotorary typically has a darker tone but a stuffy low register and pistons typically are easier to play but can lack color (both personal opinion).
it is sad to read the ignorance of some... . The majority liked this video and are perfectly aware who is Gergiev which makes me feel a lot better! Cheers to all music lovers in all it´s forms.
@featheredmusic I've often wondered how much the writers of incidental music for cartoons were influenced by Igor Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and others who'd mastered the art of providing a soundtrack to heighten the sense of drama in rapid-cut visual scenes.
The Rite of Spring and the Firebird are two of my absolute favorite musical pieces of all time, no other pieces have moved me like these. Stravinsky is the greatest composer of the 20th century, no doubt about it.
This is some of the heaviest music I've heard, but in a completely different way, I love this. The attention to detail in this kind of music is inspiring.
Thank you jamajun88 for posting this brilliant interpretation by Gergiev. The Audio isn't so bad. I've heard Stravinsky conduct this (on an LP of course) and the conductor hit it on the nail. The tempo never wavered and the orchestra is just brilliant. Thanks!
from what i heard, when you play, if you move, it's to suggest emotion and passion. If you move too much, you look insane, if you don't move, you don't look professional. Looks like this orchestra has both characteristics... and 4:37 to 4:40... HOLY SHIT SO FAST, it doesn't seem at the tempo Gergiev is conducting!
It is a fact that the Wiener Philharmoniker sometimes uses unusual instruments or instruments built for a different pitch than is common. It explains the unique sound this orchestra has, particular in the late-romantic repertoire...Despite its drawbacks on several issues, it is a totally independant and selfconscious orchestra. Recieving no financial support for its existence in maybe the best MusikVerein of the world.
i also have to comment on the sexism. it's unjust to be so. and just before the lullaby, where the tension builds, the notes are poor and sound sloppy.
Gergiev and Karajan are rapidly becoming my favorite conductors. Both have a wonderful sense of the music--its intuitive, almost as if their skill is something that cannot be taught. Its just too amazing of a gift...
Gergiev is a highly exciting conductor. He always lets his temperament play a part of his musical interpretation. So the music always arouses to a certain tension which is just exhilerating. It always gets you a feel how modern this music still is. I am not so fond of the 1919 suite and its economy of musical means. I like the 1911 lushness of orchestration and its flowing from one section to another but that's just what I prefer.
It`s a german rotary trumpet. They are used mostly in German and Austrian orchestras. The quality of it`s sound is slightly different from the regular piston trumpets and they were invented first
By my videoreaction you will find the adress of my other website (philharmonia) with many parts of the ballet in Mariinskytheater (in the month june 2008) with Valery Gergiev!
