  • Orchestra on steroids.

  • valery the best EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Amazing!!

  • maestro

  • Strabiliante !!!

  • I think Gergiev should be the principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic

... of course, if it could have one :(

  • Oh my God! Viennese oboes - real shit ...

  • what a freaking awesome at 4:33

  • this cuts off the whole beginning of the piece. damn.

  • this cuts off the whole beginning of the piece, which is great.

  • I was truly surprised at the beginning cause open mouth of a violin player

  • Best interpretation of the Infernal Dance EVER.

  • Great Bassoon!!!!!!!!!

  • TWO CONTRABASSOONS!!!! that hardly ever happens

  • Love the part at 1:15

  • I love how absolutely demented this piece is. This has always been one of my favorite pieces to play

  • Wow now that is conducting 6:34

  • Tom & Jerry backing track :D

  • That is an interesting xylophone, I've never seen one with accidentals and naturals flush.

  • This piece must be impossible to play at a concert, it makes you so nervous!

  • @fcmilsweeper9 Nervous? no. Insane? Yes!

  • and this year the set piece of the senior orchestra in the Hong Kong School Music Festival is the whole introduction of Firebird PLUS the Inferno Dance!!! isnt that crazy

  • power of horns and trumpets

  • fucking conducting stravinsky, the hardest rhythms next to mine.

  • this piece is epic.

    I love Stravinsky.

Gergiev has a great interpretation of it.

  • thanks for the upload. i love this piece

  • I like the manic, maddening energy gergiev imbues in this piece. It's one of the best I've heard. Too bad Stravinsky isn't one of his favourite composers. I think Prokofief is if I;m not mistaken.

  • Feel the Power of the BASSOON!!!

  • the only thing worse than artist wanna-be´s are critic wanna-be´s, and every single music video is filled with them!!

  • I play this music with my orchestra, but it will never be as good as this... What a star of a conductor!

    Very well played :)

  • 1:12 to 1:22 are the 10 seconds of awesomeness!!

  • it's most interesting comparing this recording with the one by boulez from 2010... it's mostly the same musicians but so different completely! boulez definitely doesn't show any emotion while conducting and gergiev, well... but it looks like the musicians play so much more emotional with boulez and i also like boulez' tempo better! it looks like gergiev want to do a special interpretation which doesn't work that well...

  • @mortalfrog0815 Exactly! This performance is one big mess, very sloppy, and it's the conductor's fault. Boulez is far superior.

  • @simwest7834 i haven't heard many interpretations of this song so maybe i just dont know, but i dont really hear it as a giant mess. could u possibly elaborate on this so i can better understand what u mean?

  • wow. this is a really great recording !

  • EARGASM.

    i love stravinsky.

i love the rite of spring too.

  • I'm sure he conducted with a tooth pick once, anyone know which piece that is? it's been a while.

  • @Bassoonater Shosti 11

  • 3:16 , What time is it..=) ?

  • Gergiev rege com tanto vigor e talento que torna essa obra se torna mais do que divina.

  • I play bassoon, and the soloist in this video just didn't do it for me. He didn't go anywhere with the phrase, he was just blowing notes and vibrato. Any thoughts?

  • @TheBassoonchk My impression is that much of the whole orchestra was doing the same ... down to the conductor? I have yet to hear the version by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with the charismatic Andris Nelsons conducting. I watched him work the Birmingham orchestra the other day on a live BBC Proms broadcast at The Albert Hall in London. They work as an extension of his arm and body movements and facial expression - it is quite a remarkable sight and the outcome is sensational.

  • @TheBassoonchk Yes, you are principal bassoon of what orchestra?

  • @trevjr as a freshman in highschool I was the top scorer in the state, however, as it is only my second year of high school, I have yet had the time to audition for a bigger orchestra. As part of my lessons, my teacher and I analyze pieces such as this. (Not on youtube, but recordings he has of orchestras) these were simply my thoughts on the performance. :)

  • @TheBassoonchk not the best not the worst by no means... I enjoyed the way he phrased it, it was a little different from the rest of the interpretations i've heard, but different isn't always better. I personally like other interpretations, but this one is definately something i would listen to over and over again

  • I have a question to trumpet players. As far as valves go, is there preference to rotary valves in a way like "oh it makes my tone a little brighter". Basically what I'm asking is why would someone pick one over the other as a trumpet player. Me being a tuba player, there is a debate over rotary and pistons. For example rotorary typically has a darker tone but a stuffy low register and pistons typically are easier to play but can lack color (both personal opinion).

  • Oftentimes I get goosebumps feeling the unique genius of stravinsky in this movement. If only there's a video of Gergiev rehearsing this piece.

  • feel the power of the orchestra

  • Bassoon solo = epic xD

  • this is just gorgeous!

  • to stravinsky lovers. maybe you would like this concerto.

just write the word FREAKOLLO, and you would get to a 2 parts concerto, enjoy.

  • Bravo!!! Fantastic*^-^* Thank you very much for posting & sharing this wonderful video*^-^*

  • and he ISNT on lsd, awe inspiring conductor

  • 0:13 hahaha wtf he looks like is running the maraton hah

  • it is sad to read the ignorance of some... . The majority liked this video and are perfectly aware who is Gergiev which makes me feel a lot better! Cheers to all music lovers in all it´s forms.

  • I love Stravinsky, his music always reminds me of nightmarish cartoons.

  • @featheredmusic I've often wondered how much the writers of incidental music for cartoons were influenced by Igor Stravinsky, Shostakovich, and others who'd mastered the art of providing a soundtrack to heighten the sense of drama in rapid-cut visual scenes.

  • maestro is on crack :D

  • those are really cool looking oboes, the well part of it is soo big,.

  • at 0.50, that are twins ^^

  • listen to chsilber he's right. His breadth of knowledge is outstanding. A good moderating influence.

  • God how I wish I was in the audience to witness this.

  • i love it when directors get totally into the music! and this guy gets into it!(: Bravo! this displaying of Firebird is absolutely amazing! :D

  • Espetacular!!!

  • The Rite of Spring and the Firebird are two of my absolute favorite musical pieces of all time, no other pieces have moved me like these. Stravinsky is the greatest composer of the 20th century, no doubt about it.

  • I first heard FIREBIRD when I was 15 and I thought the dance of Katchei with the ascending pizzicatos and trailing flutes was pure genius.

  • This is some of the heaviest music I've heard, but in a completely different way, I love this. The attention to detail in this kind of music is inspiring.

  • Thank you jamajun88 for posting this brilliant interpretation by Gergiev. The Audio isn't so bad. I've heard Stravinsky conduct this (on an LP of course) and the conductor hit it on the nail. The tempo never wavered and the orchestra is just brilliant. Thanks!

  • The secret to getting good audio is to use a good set of headphones. Don't use the speakers on your monitor.

  • dat was sum gangsta trumpet blad

  • from what i heard, when you play, if you move, it's to suggest emotion and passion. If you move too much, you look insane, if you don't move, you don't look professional. Looks like this orchestra has both characteristics... and 4:37 to 4:40... HOLY SHIT SO FAST, it doesn't seem at the tempo Gergiev is conducting!

  • It is a fact that the Wiener Philharmoniker sometimes uses unusual instruments or instruments built for a different pitch than is common. It explains the unique sound this orchestra has, particular in the late-romantic repertoire...Despite its drawbacks on several issues, it is a totally independant and selfconscious orchestra. Recieving no financial support for its existence in maybe the best MusikVerein of the world.

  • Truly, this is what it must sound like to go mad.

  • Yeah totally!

  • the harpist one

  • i also have to comment on the sexism. it's unjust to be so. and just before the lullaby, where the tension builds, the notes are poor and sound sloppy.

  • to letlive666...

The trumpet is still the same, it just has rotary valves instead of pistons. rotary valves can also be found on french horn.

  • Uwielbiam tą muzykę

    I love this music ; ]

  • where are the women!!!!??

  • I've heard that this orchestra in particular has a history of gender discrimination. Apparently it's getting better.

  • the harpist is a female.

  • Gergiev definatley did the robot for a second

  • what kind of trumpet is that?

  • Gergiev and Karajan are rapidly becoming my favorite conductors. Both have a wonderful sense of the music--its intuitive, almost as if their skill is something that cannot be taught. Its just too amazing of a gift...

  • Gergiev is a highly exciting conductor. He always lets his temperament play a part of his musical interpretation. So the music always arouses to a certain tension which is just exhilerating. It always gets you a feel how modern this music still is. I am not so fond of the 1919 suite and its economy of musical means. I like the 1911 lushness of orchestration and its flowing from one section to another but that's just what I prefer.

  • like :18 seconds in that mallet player gets annoying but i like the rest of the song

  • Gergiev IS THE DIRECTOR.

This is my favourite Stravinskij's work. Impressive.

  • I think it was done very well....i just personally don't enjoy this version of firebird...i like the other version better

  • I have to say this recording and interpretation isn't spectacluar, but the music is always, always supurb.

  • 2:05

    wat trumpet is that?

  • I think it's a german trumpet.. not sure.

    I can't describe differently ^^

  • It`s a german rotary trumpet. They are used mostly in German and Austrian orchestras. The quality of it`s sound is slightly different from the regular piston trumpets and they were invented first

  • I mean rotary valve:)

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY STRAVINSKY ,Wonderful music

  • Gergiev is one of the greatest conductors of our time, you bunch of idiots.

  • @chsilber

My OPINION on a clearly subjective medium, is one of the greatest of our time, you bunch of apes.

  • @Anontalkwarrior you cant educate pork,

  • @gordongate

    I giggled

  • @chsilber The dude looks like he's very exhausted but he's inspirational in truth xD i love how he conducts around 1:30, its just awesome xD

  • happy birthday GENIOUS!!

  • Happy Birthday to Stravinsky!

    致敬!

  • Happy Birthday Igor. I am sure we would have been very good friends.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY STRAVINSKY!!!

  • sounds like a part from disney from 0:45 to 1:14 fabulous the trumpetors were awesome...

  • i love this conductor! he really gets into it so much that he's dripping sweat. awesome.

  • great.

  • what exciting music this must be to play..........

    Challenging AND rewarding.

  • Stravinsky is a bit too experimental fore my taste, but this is cind of cool.

  • この曲大好きです!

  • martin mühlfellner on the 1st trumpet....yeah

  • Thats the best " Infernal Dance " I've ever heard. It's better than the performance with Abbado !

    Great !

  • Sorry, on my site "philharmonia" in the month JULY 2008.

You can also look at VEOH (tags: Vuurvogel).

  • By my videoreaction you will find the adress of my other website (philharmonia) with many parts of the ballet in Mariinskytheater (in the month june 2008) with Valery Gergiev!

  • this is Valery Gergiev one of the best conductors ever.

  • the conductor looks pretty funny :D

  • who is this conductor? Anyone know?

  • Gergiev

  • ......does anyone read the descriptions? ever?

  • ...guess not...

  • i like certain aspects of this recording like the brassy-ness of some sections but berliner philharmonker has many recordings that are in my opinion better. i like the fire that the french horns have in the BPO but i appreciate the full creamy sound displayed by the vienna horn section

  • but this version is different from the ones i heard before! there are alot of variations in the instrumentation and the scores...

  • That is due to the fact that Stravinsky changed the composition multiple times so he could uphold copyrights.

  • wooooooooow this is the real firebird!!!!!!!!! awesome!!

  • Not like there's a fake one ... :P

  • But there is the complete ballet in addition to several suites. I'm sure by the real one he means ballet.
