  • I like the way they fight to the very end before running.

  • The trouble is in how the things start.

Ideal would be to run the engine with no fuel, getting the pistons and cylinder walls hot.

At that point a small quantity of fuel is to be injected and the engine to be allowed to get up to temp.

This means that the generator is to be used as a motor, a fairly involved refit of both the electrical controls and update of the mechanical governor.

Once refitted the engine will have a 20% increase efficient operation, well worth it.

  • You never get that out of a sulzer powered class 47....much more refined . Light touch paper and retreat ha ha ha!

  • It is nothing to do with Greenpeace or so called treehuggers, this is just rubbish and outdated technology which was never really credible.

    Disgraceful that it still exists.

    floriańska6

  • @florianska6 - you fail to see the point, these trains are yes, outdated and less technologically advanced, hence why there preserved! preserving history.

now, I personally can't argue with that!

  • @florianska6 It's part of our railways history, surely they can't just be erradicated?

  • Total rubbish. Should be scrapped immediately.

Years ago you just lit a fire and waited until the water boiled!

    floriańska6

  • @florianska6 - I prefer putting the BIS in and pressing a button any day, I have fired steam locos and know what to prefer! we all have our own views, but to condemn the class 50 as rubbish makes you look rather stupid, that or ignorant of its history and all Diesel locos history.

  • LONG LIVE THE 16CSVT

  • Now that's a perfect start up. Nice and claggy. Just what the lungs need! Great vid mate!

  • All I can say is My Lordz what a Hellfire start up. You can't beat a bit of clag on a chilly day :^) Great vid 5*

  • I love English Electric cold starts!!!!

  • Oh dear...people posting on here evidently simply don't understand the concept of global warming and climate change...especially that comment by @40022laconia....

  • @edj66 - It would seem you either miss understood the deliberate humour in said reffered comment or would generally like to make trouble.

I do hope it was a miss understanding.

  • @edj66 Like 40022laconia clearly states the climate is changing naturally. If there is anything helping it along it's all the heavy industry in places like America, Japan and China to name but a few.

  • @edj66 Actually it's muppets that go on about tree hugging and saving the moss that have blurred the green peace message. Greenpeace was never about living in mud huts driving battery powered cars!

No-one actually UNDERSTANDS global warming thats half the problem. It drives me nuts when people see a bit of smoke and go OMG, what about the polar bears! Seriously! Get some perspective!

  • My goodness...what a smokescreen...really cool, though...save the beast...My moped smokes a little, too...(see my Sachs G4 video), but not THAT much...I guess, however, when you get the loco back running properly, it WILL beat my 40 km/hr top speed...!

    cheers from Toronto

  • can you flood a diesel loco

  • This is a common problem for diesel locomotives depending on their hydraulic system. Cold oil is really heavy to move through the system so the first cycles of the engine are going irregulary slow with much noise :-) Imagine what powerful batteries you need for the electric starter to make the first move.

  • Winter Issue! Not wrong there!!!!

  • forget greenplease weve just had the coldest winter for years due to proper locos like this all of green peace should go back in there central heated house and when its hot drive there air con cars the climate is changing naturally

  • well done!

  • hellfire, great stuff mate, thats how a loco should clag, lol

  • 2.45

  • public transport is good for the enviroment!!! awsome 5*****

  • I bet these trains are popular with Greenpeace!

  • Is this how long it normally takes to start a diesel loco from cold?

  • I think the bag needs changing LOL:) Sweeep my beauty :)

  • great vid, that 50s a real clagstar

  • Well after viewing this for about 10 times I have to acknowledge that it pretty damn impressive. Mike.

  • As someone who knows nothing about loco's are they a 24v system ?or is is it much higher ? and whats the engine size in litre's please .

  • well, not 100% sure but i think the displacement in litres for

    -Class 50 'Hoover' EE16CSVT (2,700 bhp) is 247 litres

    -Paxman Valenta V12 88 litres

    -Class 35 'Hymek' Maybach V16 87 litres

cant say anything about the electric system, sorry. greetings the shrimp

  • Battery voltage on old British Rail locomotives is 110v. Some more modern equipment still uses 110v others use 90v and come across some using 72v.

  • all i can say is "magnificent" im speechless after seeing a much loved class 50 restart after a failure. 50 019 is such a sound and fantastic loco. hope all goes well on the return to normal life! Many thanks for posting this 5* and a fav! Cheers. Zac
