Do you notice how melody takes like five HUGE bags with her everywhere she goes? I think she is so scared of being without her stuff she can't even leave home without it.
This is a mental disorder and there is a scale which establishes the degree a person hoards. It is called the NSGCD Clutter Hoarding Scale. It is the Official Organizational Assessment Tool. You can internet search this and also find it in pdf format.
@RockerChicklet77 i noticed it too that person needs to be admitted she obviously can't take care of herself. Her case was beyond hoarding that was psychotic. Where does she shower?. The way everyone was passive with her was irritating she really needed tough love not enablers and rationalizers.
I agree with your comment....she needs help and a person like her would thrive being around people in a group home...there is something always going on and you have your own private room
I agree with those who said the landlord is justified in his decision. They dont give a rat's arse about your mental health or "progress". Even when he evicts her he'll have to pay to have her shit removed and the apt cleaned.
Besides the clutter, who know's what is laying beneith all the crap!! Mold, mice, wood rot....they didn't even mention that!!
Maybe becoming homeless and pushing a shopping cart full of clutter can cure her hoarding.
I am a hoarder. Melodie wants to be functional? Well she is still functional while homeless with and without her stuff. It is true. I have to let go and not worry. I am promising you all, I will handle my addiction.
I'm not sure if I am a hoarder. I've found somet hings on the street before that I'm keeping in my room. At first it was mild, it's not yet an obsession, but I can feel it is getting worse.
I now have two rooms, though they are not close to full yet. I am afraid that they will be one day.
I strongly urge you to let people into your life, and having some talks away from home, about needing help organizing. Explain to people you trust and can depend on, that you need help, and this is serious. Then, try taking it from there, or call an organizer who aids hoarders, if you cannot organize by yourself. Do this asap, so it won't get worse. That is priority number 1. I will be praying for your progress, and don't ever give up! :)
@Topazman12 all the best to you... i think the idea to have 3 boxes is good. =) If you feel you can't let go of the items, maybe see it as: if you give it away, other people are able to use it, where as if you're just hoarding, it's just sitting there collecting dust. good luck. =D
at some point people have to take accountability for their actions. If she knew she was facing an eviction she had the option to make a choice - homelessness or hoarding.
Melodie's story is so sad. She has suffered enough as it is and doesn't deserve to be out in the streets. If only her landlord world have been more cooperative, helping her to find a solution to get organized... since she has got ADD as well as OCD, she might have benefited from medication such as Ritalin. I really hope her landlord had a change of heart in the end!
that's not the landlord's job tho. seems iike this had been going on for years and years, at the end of the day that's still HIS house and he has to protect it :-(
im not a hoarder but when from the age of 15 to 20 i disliked throwing stuff even if i was not using it. i hated if anyone removed the things that belonged to me.
i melodie should have gotten the same hypnotherapy that the couple did. the feeling of being insecure is the reason for this behavior.
I honestly feel really bad for Melodie, so sad.

You're right.
Melodie got a 10-day CURE OR QUIT notice. That's not an eviction.
Basically, she had 10 days to get rid of all that shit in her apartment or else be evicted.
10 days was PLENTY of time for her to clear out that crap, but she chose to go to court over it instead?
Melodie's refusal to aggressively deal with her hoarding addiction is not her landlord's problem. He was probably at his wit's end with that woman.
Melodie reminds me of my grandmother (who's just as bad).

He has to think of many people. If that apt got on fire and killed the kid in the next apt it would be on his hands.
