When I was a little kid not only did most of my uncles and older people in my rural area have Willy's Jeeps we also had a plethora of Army Mules. One of my uncles who fought in WW2 was in the Army when they transitioned away from Horses and Mules. The "Army Mule" was a very reliable beast who could operate off-road and in low temp's where Jeeps and Trucks would freeze up. Jeep was a TRUE "Modern Marvel" of its day! Great Video, Thanks for posting.
The Germans too relied heavily on horses. All their mechanized stuff was about 25/30% percent of the whole army. The leading forces of the Blitzkrieg doctrine had all of the tanks/motorcycles/halftracks and so on and so on but in the rear the main portion of of the armies travelled by foot/horses and bicycles.
I would love to have an old willys jeep. They are the pinnacle of all 4wd technology, and really the measuring stick for all 4wd vehicles today. really though, for what they are, they are more capable than anything on the market today.
The "Humvee" is simply a sign that America has too much money. You can build 5 Willy's for the price of one Hummer and it's more reliable. They're so inexpensive that if its badly damaged you can just strip it for parts and walk away. We try to uparmor our Hummers so they're like "little tanks". Ridiculous! Old Veterans who drove Jeeps across France fighting the Nazis must get a kick out of modern soldiers huddling inside their Hummers for safety.
I fondly remember the Jeep from the late 50's and 60's when I was a youngster. It seemed like in my small rural county there were at least a hundred jeeps! Every hunter or farmer had 1. With the winch on the front and the simplicity anyone could keep one running and they were like a goat, they'd go anywhere! Great for deer hunting. Great memories of an "old friend".
i think its pretty amazing where these little jeeps went, they were truely amazing vehicles and the pinicle in 4wding designing. later being replace by one of the best 4wds in history, even with it ifs and irs suspension, the capabilities for the humvee are almost limitless
When I was a little kid in the 50's and 60's you could pick up a Willy's Jeep for a couple of hundred bucks. Most were in really good shape. A couple of my uncles had them for use around the farm and for hunting. Still had original winches from WW2 and Korea. Great utility vehicles and easy to maintain/repair/drive.
Because wikipedia can be changed by everyone and anyone. All of the "experts" can throw in their two cents, without having to have facts to back it up.
7:55 There's a rusty old jeep willys in one of my grandmas field that has tilling equipment bolted onto the front. Kind of disgraceful. It's probably too far gone to salvage anyways though :(
hell yeah it would. There was one in the back of this dude yard near my house. I offered the guy $1000 for it. It was a peace of shit. He basically told be to fuck off. I will get one someday. Thnx for the u/l.
All BS ... it was for VIPs for comfort mobility. HOW many privates had a Jeeps ?

The Jeep is an "accidental success" story that is now as iconic and Americana as Coca-Cola.
