This was the first GP I ever watched. This amazing display of sportsmanship got me hooked on F1 and I was lucky enough to slot into F1 fandom just in time to watch Senna reach the peak of his performance.
The next three years until Senna's death were the best years of F1.
Anyone reading this who doesn't know much about Senna - watch the movie/documentary 'Senna'. Highly recommended. Very poignant last 30 mins covering his and Roland Ratzenberger's deaths on the same weekend at Imola in '94
I was there with a couple of mates in the group on the left side of the straight, @ 2.15 the guy with the flag drops his pants and shows his arse, we were level with him. It was a crazy few minutes we were part of Mansell Mania.
F1 died in 2006...Before that it was all about the sport the fans and the heart and soul, now it's all about the tires, the money, the robot cars, the fake circuits who can't compare to the good ol classic circuits etc etc.
@alief54 Sadly, you're right. Another reason why he wouldn't do it is because he'd have to be scared of getting penaltilized by the FIA for that... R.I.P. Formula One.
Why the HELL isn't this footage in the new Senna movie?? Beggars belief. It's one great racing driver telling an even greater racing driver how much he admires and respects him. Senna may not have endeared himself to all in F1, but they all still knew how great a racer he was, even if they didn't always like the man. This footage shows how much he was respected and it should have been included in the movie!! Even if it becomes a DVD extra, it will be too little too late.
@DoctorTimmyTiddles Really? its not in the movie? Im seeing the film tomorrow , i too cant believe this would not be there, how crazy... you sure you didnt fall asleep at any point dude????? Cheers.
@DoctorTimmyTiddles The film is about the Senna/Prost relationship, the driving-force of the Senna's F1 career. A fantastic gesture from Mansell, but how does this fit in a film about Senna and Prost, and Senna's relationship with Brazil? Beggars belief that you didn't understand that. But then, I saw the film last night and there were people TALKING as Senna lay there fatally injured; honestly, I was totally moved, and these fuckers have only come along to see the crash and talk through it.
@bigmickno9 The film is called "Senna", NOT "Senna, Prost & Brazil". He was a complicated soul, one day slapping Eddie Irvine across the face for overtaking him, the next jumping out of his car to help an injured Eric Comas, to driving himself & Prost dangerously off the track, to being given a lift back to the pits by a driver (Mansell) he didn't always see eye-to-eye with. Yet only two of these got a mention. I just hope the DVD gives us way more on Senna The Man as the movie is incomplete.
@DoctorTimmyTiddles A 100 minute film is not long enough to encompass all these aspects of his career. The film IS about Senna, Prost and Brazil (you've obviously seen it), it's not about Senna and Comas, Senna and Irvine, Senna and Mansell. Prost and Brazil are the obvious driving forces behind Senna's tremendous skill and desire. The film is what it is, and is bloody good. If it encourages new interest in Senna's career then people will seek out more about him, then it's done a fantastic job.
@bigmickno9 It's not a bad film, I agree, but it's an incomplete one. If you think it should be called "Senna, Prost & Brazil" then why isn't it? Probably because it IS a film about Ayrton Senna and everything else is secondary. As someone who grew up watching Senna in F1, this should've been a more complete 2hr film, which would've been just as fascinating and just as exciting - but it wasn't. As I said, I hope the DVD gives us more.
@DoctorTimmyTiddles I never said it should be called that. The film chooses to focus on the relation with Prost and Brazil, it couldn't do it all. Why pick so hard? It was great and I really enjoyed it. It's not an autobigraphy, but a biopic and I've never seen a biopic which manages to tell a story from all aspects - that's the nature of cinema unfortunately. All the facts about Senna's career are out there to be found.
I was there it was an amazing atmosphere everyone in the crowd was cheering as mansell came past with senna sat on the car! Everyone felt the same it was good sportsmanship!! Great memorys from a special time in F1
Say, for example, Webber and Hamilton had done this at Suzuka, they both would have been hit with massive fines for breach of safety and assault of a track marshal.
Cause anybody behind him was at least a lap down. When his car ran out of fuel he was about 1.8 laps ahead the car behind him. So after they crossed the line Senna's car was still 0.8 laps ahead of Nelson Piquet's.
