The 2003 Sony X505 was the original wedge shaped ultralight with chiclet keys, and the wedge shaped Air with its chiclet keys followed years later.

I'm all for the "Apple is not awesome" idea, I have a HP TC1100 over an iPad and they are fairly similar. The X505 and MacBook Air aren't. While I love to mock the Air on its lack of anything useful, it does do somethings much better than the X505; the Air has ~5 hours of battery, the X505 has 2 hours, Air has Wireless N, the X505 has an add-in card. The 1.1ghz Pentium M is the same as in my TC1100, which is similar performance to the 1ghz A4 CPU used in the original iPad, not a core2duo.

Apple didn't want to design a computer completely based on slimness, they wanted to build a very slim laptop with a large, multi-touch trackpad, a full size keyboard and a good display, as well as a faster processor than all of the competition. If they wanted to build something like this then they would of. I doubt your laptop that you're showing us here has all of those things.

The best laptop you could buy from apple at that time was the powerbook g5 the late '02/early '03 Antimony model. It was a complete disaster, bear in mind this was also the most powerful mac portable & fat in comparison that came with a flimsy 867 MHz to 1 GHz cpu... I wont even discuss the ibook series or the fact they didn't make another powerbook, leaving loyal users wait to '06 for the intel based macbook.
