I just discovered Miss Lavette today and man she is quite an inspiration to me that we all can be a great singers but to be an artist is a different story!

Great interview I'd don't think I ever heard of her until the Chaka Khan UNCF tribute where she performed recently...btw she got a standing ovation from everyone including Chaka
Granglepuss: a quick post datum. The Johnny Hartman version of Lush Life that I was thinking of was done with John Coltrane and his quartet. Trane died in 1967, so the recoring must be from 1965, give or take.
Granglepuss: Lush LIfe is an immortal jazz composition by Billy Strayhorn. Stray was Ellington´s composer and arranger, and there are countless Elliington songs that were composed by Stray. Lush Life is one of the most difficult jazz songs to sing, and the best version I know is by Johnny Hartman, recorded maybe 40 years ago.
One class lady who has the grace to let us catch up to her. Some fine wine is best not served before it's time and NOW is Bettye's time to shine and be appreciated!
It's great to see Ms Lavette doing really well and still performing but she REALLY underestimates how good she was when she was younger. Her 60s recordings are as good as anything recorded in that decade.
'saw Bettye for the first time opening for Buddy Guy. I was so happy to find out about her. A legend! What a cool attitude too. Good things come later in life often....she deserves GOOD.
I discovered Mrs.Lavette 4 years ago on Morgan Freeman's Blues Divas. Her rendition of Joe Simon's Your Time to Cry is outstanding!! Every since, my mom and I have been fans!! What a mistake they made to shelve her music and not promote her to the fullest!! I had difficulty, but i was able to order her very first album. I also purchased another album. Eventually, I'll get all of her music. We love Bettye in Houston. This is definitely her time!! I've never seen a more passionate performer!!
When you talk to her, tell that her fans would really like her to put out a DVD (perhaps of live performances). I'd be the first in line to buy it and I'm sure I wouldn't be alone. Thanks.
I had to watch this interview to understand how she can perform like that every time. I suspected that it has to be draining to go all out on every performance, but like she says in the interview, she takes care of herself to be able to do that as singers are like athletes. Gotta love this great lady - love her!
Never heard of Bettye until last night, heard her singing "Love Reign O'er Me" on Kennedy Center Honors. Nothing but respect for this woman now. Her voice makes my soul tingle.
It's a trip to see somebody who's seen so much history and yet is so alive and engaged in what's happening right now. I saw her at Stern Grove in SF yesterday, and she won over a whole bunch of people who'd never heard of her before.
I thoroughly enjoyed that, what a woman! I think this is the first video that I will have actually bookmarked.... Laugh if you will, I am not a junkie... yet ;-)
What an intelligent, perceptive, and engaging, woman. One kind of wishes other, younger singers, understood their craft and art as well as the incomparable Bettye!
Absolutely trmendous..i'm gonna share this with a dozen of my you tube pals here in the north of England who love Bettye since we first heard "Let me down easy"...thanks so much for posting this.
Bettye Lavette is a true R&B and Soul survivor. She is so real and raw it's almost frighting. You can hear the honesty and emotion in her voice. She towers over so many lesser talents. She is not about hype, she is a warrior. Her voice touches every nerve. She is a classic Soul singer.
Wow. This interview is so honest and natural! Bettye was turned onto me by her wonderful drummer Daryl Pierce...
As a singer of 30 years experience myself and still full time in the biz, I find her remarks to be very inspiring and real. Pro singers definitely understand what she's talking about!
Thanks B! Someday we'll all sit down and share our own very unique stylings of "Lush Life"! HA!
Please note that the keyboard player heard here was a substitute for Bettye's regular keyboard player/musical director, Alan Hill, who was not available to do this gig.
I agree with Mr. Penn, the camera loves her and she is the consumate professional. Her recent success is a fine example of her dedication to her craft. I have had the pleasure of meeting her several times, usually after one of her shows and she is exactly the same affable and appreciative person that you see and hear in this video clip. Friends and neighbors when she appears in your area buy a couple of tickets and have youself a great time. . I absolutely love the woman.
This is a very interesting interview with the incomparable, Bettye LaVette. I hope the poster will give us the rest of it. This was like teasing a little kid with a new toy! Please give us the rest.
She's an inspiration on every level!
