Pretty sure you can hear Kurt take over playing the riff around 0.26, as it changes very slightly. There's not much of a gap, but maybe it was edited to leave out the gap.
i like this. i don't know why people think the louder they yell their opinions the more their right.
Yea dave is a beast at drumming. But every single musician I come across has problems writing superior song structures like cobain, even grohl himself.
maybe everyone just has education getting in the way.
Iv'e just realised you can actually hear Grohl at the beginning saying "Iv'e wrote this song, it's goes.." and then plays the riff, so he must be playing guitar, but it sounds like Cobain playing, who is playing drums? confused
@simmy3000 also sounds so much heavier than the album version, I thought Albini was hired to capture how they really sound live? sounds very sedated compared to this in my opinion
I love how Dave came up with the riff and drums for this song, yet people are still only talking about Cobain. Talk about being underappreciated. Christ.
Does anyone have a proper backstory to this? Its my favorite peice of Nirvana music right now, and i need to know all about it. Dave came up with the opening riff, that much i know. But was he on guitar for this version? It sure sounds like Dave on the drums! Also, is all of this improvised?
@padshardbank yea i had the same question too recently . this is probabaly wrong but maybe kurt had the guitar on and dave showed him the riff standing beside himwith his hand on the neck part and strummed near the neck by his hands, then ran to the drum set, cuz you hear go after kurt restarts the opening riff. let me knw what yiur thaoughts are on this.
a few years ago somebody asked paul mcartney "if you hadnt been in the Beatles, which band would you have ben in?" and he said nirvana NUFF SAID KC RIP you were fucking awesome and im so glad i met you remember in Birmingham??
@PersonMister cause you're obviously a dumb cunt. Look it up. That's an exact quote from Cobain. "Boneheaded riff." Idiot. You ever open your ignorant mouth again, I will slap it shut.
@b0w13nspac3 they should make an proper studio version of dave grohls version of this song n release it on the new foo fighters album that is gonna be released in 2011 , that would be quiet awesome
@bitchfucker94xxx Except that Foo Fighters are incapable of doing something this good. Dave should have stuck to the drums instead of doing all this radio-friendly crap.
@NightmareGanon Considering that Dave came up with this songs heavy riff and drums, id say youre a f*cking moron buddy. Also, the Foos have range. They can do soft and loud, certainly not a f*cking to their music styles. Nirvana was one-dimensional. Heavier doesnt always necessarily mean better, hell, even Cobain liked the Beatles pop tunes. I really wish people would get a clue and read books.
@PersonMister oh, i get it. a dave grohl fan bitch that thinks nirvana sucks. youre too stupid to even bother with. The song is a masterpiece. Cobain helped make it that way. Grohl is NOTHING without Cobain. Even he admits that. Grohl said that you can't really offer very many songs when you have a Kurt Cobain in your band.
@Sage80 Grohl is nothing without Cobain? Right. Because they didnt blow up until after Dave joined the band, right? His signature drumming isnt a key part of that band's success, at all, right? Its just pure coincidence that hes managed to successfully front his own band for the last 16 years. Some of these comments are sad.
@PersonMister Instead of "radio-friendly crap", I should have said "pop mediocrity". And I'm not talking about being heavy or not... I'm talking about music that's designed to be liked by the general public. Maybe their early career contained something else... but it's certainly not what I've found in their more recent efforts.
And I'm not dissing Grohl, he's a terrific drummer and has been on some great records (In Utero Songs for the Deaf, TCV).
@NightmareGanon Well then, I completely disagree. Dave said recently on Chelsea Lately that the band doesnt pay attention to any modern music. They have existed in their own bubble the last 16 years, doing what they want to do. They have their own studio since 04, and their own record label. There are no standards, theyre just doing what they want to do, and frankly, nobody does what they do better, which is straight rock music. In Utero and Songs for the Deaf are overrated. TCV is not.
@NightmareGanon and dont tell me that people are listening to Songs for the Deaf or TCV for Josh Homme. 99% of the reason why that record is good is because of Dave's drumming. Otherwise Homme is a jerkoff. The rythym section for TCV is also what makes that record good. JPJ and Dave. I could care less for Homme. Dave's drumming is much more diverse as well as you can tell hes added and learned new things. In Utero? Milk It, Scentless Apprentice, HSB and All Apologies are the only good tracks.
This demo is great. This could have been what rock music became in the mid-90's if Nirvana had their way with In Utero and Cobain didn't off himself. Milk It is another example.
Best Nirvana Demo EVER !!!! Hey does anyone know what he is singing / saying in this demo ? i would give anything to know the Lyrics of this demo alone !!! If you know it or think you have worked out what he is saying please send me a reply Thanks :P
one of the best versions of any song by anyone anywhere. I can listen to this song for days and never get sick of it. Yes Grohl is a freaking madman on this for sure. Nirvana being tight but loose - LOVE IT LOVE IT
dave aint playing guitar, its kurt.this was the first song the band all co wrote, dave came up with the riff on the drums and kurt worked the song around that
@zebrahead32 this guy has the correct answer. In Utero was a masterpiece and probably my favorite studio Nirvana album, Kurt was still loving music and Dave was finally let loose. hopefully the new foo fighters album soon to be released will bring back In Utero vibes beause lately the foo have been crappin out.
There is actually a rumor that this recording features Evan Dando of the lemonheads on drums, and Dave and Kurt are both on guitar in this song with Kurt doing vocals. In an interview recently Dando said he jammed with Nirvana once in '92 and got to play around on "a new riff Dave was working on that I later found out became Scentless Apprentice", or something like that.

and when you believed that you have listen every posible nirvana song something like this makes you wonder...what the f...k is that...briliant jamming session...rip kurt...
@knightsofavalon the live version is pretty dope too. dave puts so much energy and Kurt is playing on his passion. they combine and noveselic plays bass and it rocks
Pretty sure you can hear Kurt take over playing the riff around 0.26, as it changes very slightly. There's not much of a gap, but maybe it was edited to leave out the gap.
