This is an old mechanical system that the pilot uses to measure the flow of fertiliser from the hopper (that contains the fertiliser) out of the aircraft. The "gauge" is calibrated to show how far the hopper doors are open. These doors are operated using a mechanical lever. The wider the aperture the greater the flow & therefore the greater amount spread per acre.Average cover is approx. 50kg/acre.
my father, bob allen was flying this very same a/c on a sowing run when it threw a conrod in 1953-54 in nz !!was then ZK-AZB with fieldair in gisborne, nz..Both survived to this very day, bob also in aus..AZB was first assembled and began its career with fieldair as brand new a/c...
I was a loader driver in NZ and went from loading a Beaver to Cresco. - was an an incredible time, going from about a ton in the Beaver + or - 100 wt depending on tailwind! to the Cresco where it seemed to not matter..the days certainly went faster. - I dont think I appreciated it at the time. - Thanks for the memories.
Whats the guage? on top of the dashboard? long, skinny, upright.

Yep! The old girls only got a R985 P & W of 450hp, so a 1 tonnes load is pretty god, but not by todays standards.
