Hi, im looking to get a portable computer under 350$, will this be fast enough to run 3 internet tabs?, and can microsoft word document be installed on it?
Pretty good and accurate; I get a realistic 5+ hours on my totally loaded system. If you are savvy you can make this little "toy" incredibly powerful and useful. Keyboard has some flex so that's not so good, but it is okay. The cost is rated as high, but I would gladly buy mine over again.
When i do abit of my own time work, i use skype to talk face to face to clients does this support skype WEBCAM AND MIC without too much problems (able to be understood and understand others)?
TIP: Buy a 2gb memo stick to keep your data on so you dont use the netbooks memory and keep the speed.
@Crimsure, yes, you can do that. I've owned mine 2 years now, and for one period of 3 months I was using it 8 hours every day. I totally love it. I increased its memory with a card, and I run a lean & mean XP SP3 in about 3 GB. Now this 901 competes against netbooks with 160 GB HDDs in them, but I love my 901; so glad I bought it. Yes, change the RAM yourself to 2 GB soon as you buy it.
@4204401, these little guys are too small physically to have DVD drives. Although you can go so far as to even change the OS with a USB stick, an external DVD drive is an extremely luxurious asset if you can afford one.
XP came with the alternate 12GB model. The one he reviews has Linux and 20GB. I bought Linux for the extra memory, and then I replaced Linux with XP SP3 and got the best of both worlds. I love mine—it is a miniature powerhouse!
@connadders, you can use any mouse you want, and you can disable the touchpad when a mouse is attached. Yes, otherwise you keep muddling your keystrokes up on the touchpad. But once you have figured that out, it is no problem at all.
yes you can, i have the 901 xp, slightly moded with 2gb of ram and 16gb highspeed ssd running windows 7 very smoothly. Itle do flash and youtube rather easily, though sometimes it has a bit of trouble with youtube hd videos. The atom can only do soo much. Don't even think about gaming, itle do 2d stuff easily, but 3d, dont even think about it. Although to be fair, it CAN run them, but not very happily
Awesome review, I love it. The ASUS Eee PC 901 has ALWAYS been in my interest, and the first thing I think about when I hear "Netbook" is the ASUS Eee PC 901. I'm going to get this for school, thanks a lot for the review.
Indeed, all netbooks do not have dedicated memory, except one.
ASUS N10 has an nVidia Ion Video Card 9300 or something, that allows you to play games with much higher FPS, allowing games to be played.
If you want to play games, get that, but if you're going to pay $600+ for a netbook like the N10, might as well go with the decent laptops (I like the HP G60t)
Hi, I was just wondering if u could answer this question for me: i was gonna buy a laptop for slight gaming, games like Left 4 dead and Mirrors edge (not hardcore graphics games like Crysis), both dont require that much gaming power, im new to laptops so can u tell me if the nVidia 9600GT graphics card can play these games? or i was also looking at one with the ATI HD2600 these are the only graphics cards in laptops that i can afford. or can anyone else here can help maybe? thanks!
A qestian, since there is like 20 odd different models of Eee pc, will this 901 godown in price? And can i plug in a external cd rom to play games etc?
hi...i really need someone to know to answer and asap if he can...im in the middle of taking Eee 901 or Acer Aspine One...someone can help me choose the rite one i want it for games or surfing in the net pls someone help me to choose and if someone know the price of each psl help me
I thought I finally found the netbook I wanted to buy, this asus, and I was sold until I saw after sleep mode, you have to press cancel every single time you open it. I would be constantly opening and closing it and that alone, if I couldnt turn off that function in a setting, would keep me from buying this one.
Just ordered mine today and should arrive tomorrow.
Just wondering, is it worth installing XP on it or is Linux as good enough? cause i'm like you, i've never used Linux before, but i use Windows and Mac most of the time for uni/work.
If you're interested in linux, this is very basic... A good replacement for both OS X and... ugh.. Vista... is Ubuntu Linux. It is a great operating system with everything you could want.
Wow dave! I've been watching all of your reviews and this one is by far the most thorough and greatest. I love how you really compare some of the subtleties of the netbook with other competitors. So where do you see netbooks headed? Are they the new computers for kids in school? Or is it a bigger PDA type device? I am trying to figure out with some of the portability of laptops where you see the niche for netbooks? Keep up the good work!
I certainly think the initial offerings were only suitable for kids. But these later ones, the 901, 1000H, Acer Aspire One, etc. certainly seem more fully featured. I don't think they will ever replace a main laptop or desktop, due to the screen size and speed. They are more suited to traveling light. For example when I go to exhibitions, one of these would be ideal for email and updating the website.
Awesome i need to save up me money to get one but it will be awesome when i get one
