There's no way to tell, being as how whales are VERY smart, that an old bull

who may have had dozens of experiences with ships & men, finally made the

association that a ship meant he was going to get harpoons thrown into his back.

Actually, and there is more to it than this, I'm sure, Sperm whales are named after Spermicetti, an oily substance in their brain that whalers would extract when whaling times were more prominent. Spermicetti, I believe, is named after sperm for it does look similar to semen. You might look further into that, but I am almost certain that is generally correct.

I once saw this documentary on sharks where the scientists were on board a whaling ship because of all the blood in the water attracting sharks. They showed a Sperm whale being shot and one of the scientists remarked. "It's so sad, we know so little about them and here we are driving them to extinction."
