Yes, MAKING IT DEADPAN WAS WHAT THEY DID - on purpose and that's what makes it Unique & Funny -especially when singing it In Contrast to the earlier versions they're taken from. It's an inside joke for those who know the original versions and by the Contrast, it gets your attention (sounding different) and being Contrasted with the original.
