I dont understand why you would spend a ridiculous amount of money on a mac to put linux on it...just build your own computer thats way faster and put it on...just sounds pretty dumb to me..
@soho2014 I don't think it is. GRUB is an essential part of the Linux booting process -- you can replace it with a different bootloader, but I don't think you can just remove it. However, you should be able to have it automatically assume you want to boot into Linux, which is about as close as you can get.
@sensitivebeat macs are very useful just like any other computer...you just have to know what youre doing...my mac has made me plenty of money along with my cameras.
So you first have to install rEEfit, then make a regular partition, then install Linux like normal, and you can just use rEEfit as the first boot loader?
I'm thinking about tri-booting Windows 8, Lion and Linux Mint but I wanna make sure I won't break my MacBook. So if I delete the linux partition and then get rid of rEEfit it's back to normal right?
@A135S4656 Right. Mac OS will always be the primary so if anything is corrupt you can just delete the linux/win partiton.Im tri-booted now with Lion, Win7 ultimate and Ubuntu 11. Refit will over ride the stock efi
@A135S4656 PowerBook FTW. Intel Macs suck, sorry man, they were ahead of the time, and Apple went cheap and saved 14.2 million by moving to Intel. Those bastards.
@Justinba1010 so my macbook pro with the 540m, that would eat you powerbook for breakfast, sucks because its intel? get real...your behind the time bro...cant do much with a powerbook...make a good htpc...not to mention now that they went intel you can easily make your own hac pro for a fraction of the cost of a mac pro..
@mrwashur1991 Are you retarded? I mean read the fucking comment, you shit head. I mean you write as much as I did, but you read my first sentence? Really?
@Justinba1010 "I mean you write as much as I did, but you read my first sentence?" what does that even mean? and yes I obviously read your comment...you said "intel macs suck"...i dont see where youre going with this...so please continue to tell me how I'm wrong and youre right..
@an65001 mac is a pc.. what he does is in fact very very reasonable, and would be the only sane reason for me to buy an overpriced pc.. The reason for this is very simple, you don't have to work across 3 different laptops for making cross platform work, making your computer payload 3 times lighter having all three platforms in one computer
hi nice video i just got a macbook pro 3 months ago I'm trying to install bootcamp (win7) i download it and every time i try to install it says drivers not found...would you help me pliz
@fingerboardgimps because it uses windows partiton to convert the required linux partition. You cant partiton a mac osx ext journeled partiton to a linux partiton
@Th33M33 thanks. once you partiton and install linux on the windows side, refit will allow you to have 3 choices of OS's to boot from. windows is just a bypass to access the partiton needed to install Linux
@jpcwa74 some people prefer linux (like myself) everything for it is free. Its windows compatible so you can do everything youd normally do with your computer. And you can customize virtually everything about it.
I have a DVD of linux that works (tried it on another system) but when I put my disk in and reboot my Mac, it does not show up the linux DVD at all. Just my Windows partition and my OSX partition.
I have a macbook pro 2011, and I have to install ubuntu 11.04, but I can't do it...
I do some steps...but when the the disk is loading (before appearing the window of try or install) appear a black window which says that the live version cannot be found!!!...please Help me...
@Prolui As long as you leave a reasonable amount of space for Mac OS X on your disc, it shouldn't really slow you down. As for comparing to Parallels, doing the rEFIt method should be faster because you're running Linux natively, not in a virtual machine. BootCamp is needed to use rEFIt, IIRC, so I can't really compare the two; it's more of a case where BootCamp makes the partition and rEFIt lets you boot into it. Hope this helps :-)
Do you have to have windows already installed with bootcamp or is there another way to install a Linux OS on a mac with out that. Can you just put in the CD and boot off CD and install on a partition or make a new partition during install like in windows?
@ZetaSimsoy no, the guy said it wrong, you just need bootcamp, refit or whatever it was called, and the cd/dvd. boot up cd by holding down "c" on startup, wait for it to load no delete the ntfs partition and create new one as ext4 (mount point "/"), install bootloader on /dev/sda2 or whatever the partition is and then just install. hope it helped =)
Good vid, but a bit of constructive criticism: try to prepare the vid so you mention the facts in an orderly and pertinently fashion, I got confused a couple of times. Still, two thumbs up! :)
@3:00 - DO NOT ERASE AND BACKUP YOUR DISK IF THIS DOES NOT WORK. Put your Installation disk in the superdrive and press "C" during the startup tone. Launch repair disk from the utilities dropdown and repair the HDD.
Can you still do this now with a macbook pro? I'm just curious because things update, procedures change, and I would like to do this but I don't want to mess anything up.
You don't need a Bootcamp partition before you install Linux. Just allocate part of your drive as Free Space. And when you are installing Linux from the cd, just choose Use Free Space.
@Deliciousfruit233 it's better to use bootcamp, else the virual-bios will not be enabeled and there is a chance that linux will not be able to use the processor cooling fan, linux does not have full support for EFI, which macs do use.
Honestly, it's a better idea to pre-designate a contiguous area of your hard drive. It will work the way you say it, but you may get disk write errors or just a generally slow, fragmented disk.
--My suggestion:
1. Defrag Disk
2. Shrink the volume
3. Create a new partition from the newly-reduced volume
4. Using the linux install program, (like WUBI etc) write to that sector.
I dont understand why you would spend a ridiculous amount of money on a mac to put linux on it...just build your own computer thats way faster and put it on...just sounds pretty dumb to me..
