  • 5:11 all THE WAY

  • Truly amazing piece. But I have to admit, North Korea is an awkward place to play American music in...

  • amazing comments: appears they are originating from music afficiados or endocturnated radicals itching for a fight.

  • Was waiting for the nationalists to burn the American flags. Such an impressive performance; such a -dangerous- venue.

  • For you trumpet players that are listening to this to learn the excerpts - primarily the dance solos - notice that Phil's rubato fits into the rest of the orchestra. It is in line with what Maazel is conducting. Just a thought.

  • Haha - look at the audience!

Love this piece though - GO GERSHWIN!

  • This looks like a massive departure from common music for many onlookers, but there were a few in that crowd who "got it." A couple had that controlled orgasmic glazed over look. ;) Tough arena to show how much you really liked what you were hearing for some. (I got a near orgasm from some parts anyway).

  • thats why philip is the best :)

  • The North Koreans are sittin' there like emotionless stovepipes. They must be on the lookout for the thought police. Or thinkin' where their gonna get their next rat for dinner. "just some rice and a little ratmeat"...thats all they care about. Alex Jones think it's "prison planet" here. N.K. is a prison country. Even their neighbor(& friend...?) China treats 'em like a red headed stepchild. ('cause they cross the border into China lookin' for rats)

  • @bheadh Racist

  • The bag in the trumpet has nothing to do with any kind of prohibition of the North Koreans, it's only Gershwin's instructions.

  • 0:12 - 0:43 sexiest trumpet solo ever.

  • 0:00 - 2:55

    All of my money.

  • I love the the tubist's eyebrows at 8:30.

  • We played this in our marching band performance... and the trumpet soloist did color guard dances and it looked amazing

  • The Wisconsin marching performed the beginning part of this yesterday!! :D it was so awesome

  • These poor people look more terrified than anything else....what a shame...

  • Keiner (ausser Bernstein vielleicht) dirigiert Gershwin wie Lorin Maazel

  • Keiner ausser Bernstein vielleicht) dirigiert Gershwin wie Lorin Maazel

  • The woman in 4:06 looks like she's sorta cracking a smile...

  • But there is a real mute at 5:18

  • la seconda parte è migliore della prima. Era bello anche il film

  • Does anyone know who is conducting them?

  • @Monkeygrrl101 The conductor's name is Lorin Maazel

  • @hop208 Thank you :]

  • You gotta feel bad for those citizens. They were probably instructed exactly what to wear, how to look, how to behave...

  • actually its called a (felt crown), its similar to, if you have ever had a crown royal the purple felt bag is what you would use.

    P.S. drink anyone lol

  • a brilliant and combines classical and jazz

  • I want to get a bottle of Pernod and float around my living room naked.Seems to fit.The 2nd half of this song floors me.FREE THE WEED!!!!!

  • The Gershwin is phenomenal but the crowd is deplorable. I can't sit still listening to this it is so fun yet not one of them is even bobbing their head or cracking a smile...

  • 5:21 froze the camrea and saw the "this smut pleases me" look on his face

  • I love 6:45 to 7:00

  • That's Uncle Sam's way of saying "hey, we're nice people"!

  • The audience is full of so many staredads.

  • Lovelylovely trumpet solo. liebe die Trompete

  • On Trumpet. The incomparable Phil Smith, everybody.

  • I love the conductor at the 5:20 mark. He is *so* getting into it ;-).

  • An American in Pyongyang would sound something like Mars, from the Planet's suite.

  • terrific!!!

  • @Fabiodatubamon Do I see it right, is he tuning his tuba, allmost on every note while playing the solo?

  • @floriaantops4 yes. For the valves he pushes, he has to adjust every for every partial/ valve combination.

  • Demon look @ 8:59

  • I feel the uncontrollable urge to start a noir narrative.

  • 6 , who don't know what is music…

  • Hahahahaha Epic timpani player at 7:40

  • my best part for me it's: 7:27

  • at 6.12 is my favorite part ,use to play over an over an build my train layout to it

  • What kind of mute is that on the trumpet?

  • @SargentTaco897

its called a ghetto mute. Probably the North Korean Government didn't allow them to bring a mute thinking they might bring an illegal item like a cell phone into the country.

In other words it is a bag over the trumpet.

  • @mclaine33 Actually it's called a felt crown. Originally, players were to use the crown of a fedora without the lining but nowadays players just use a felt bag. A Crown Royal bag is probably the most common bag used.

  • @TheMelterOfFaces

Oh ok. See I had no clue. I asked some friends of mine who play trumpet in band and they had no clue when I told them. Thank you.

  • @mclaine33 actually, the music suggests to use seperate types of mutes.

  • @alisahw97

Ah. Now that I didn't know.

  • @mclaine33 - You see one of the trumpets with a straight mute at 6:20, so it's not because of any NoKor shenanigans

  • @fbama73

Yeah i see it. I was just making a joke before. Although I didn't know why at first they were using a felt bag but TheMelterof Faces explained it to me.

  • @mclaine33

They must have watched that one Mythbusters episode.

  • just last night i was listening to this on my new record player that i got for christmas! kept moving the needle back to this section (0:00-0:41) over and over again!! BEST

  • the beginning of this piece 0:00-0:41 is why i love Gershwin! it is the best part of the whole piece! favorite song in the whole world!!

  • 3:42 ... BOOM!!!! I through off my earphones. Ouch!

  • Sexiest music ever

  • i had such a sick nastey tuba solo in this peice at band camp, we did take the tempo at this speed and did well with it...... our oboe played so out of tune though!!!

  • oh man. I love this. this just might be the most amazing piece of music in musical history.

  • Listening to Gershwin always manages to make me smile(:

  • Go Phil Smith!! (and the rest of the orchestra, of course)

  • AMAZING. :D

  • Gershwin. Here was a man who understood Jazz.

  • The tempo was a tad too fast for my liking, but nevertheless it was absolutely breathtaking. Philharmonic orchestras of this skill never cease to amaze me. It was such a pity though that the audience didn't seem too impressed with the performance. I guess the appreciation of real talent seems to be an acquired taste nowadays.

  • @Machineguntapdanza

I think the North Korean are by far not as open when it comes to expressing emotion as Americans (who regularly enormously over-exaggerate they emotions).

Second is, I don't bounce around either when I'm listing to an orchestra playing (not at home nor in a concerthall).

  • @mctmct1987

Neither do I, but I simply cannot keep a straight face when listening to something like this though. When one understands the emotion paired with talent in pieces like this it is impossible not to smile at the very least.

It was weird though how even the Americans in the audience looked bored.

  • isnt North Korea like, legit the most hated country right now, and thought everybody there lived in extreme poverty cuz of the Kim Jong il bastard

  • i'm 17 and I think this is beautifull, and the film too!

  • @GR4C3W the same! and i'm 16.

  • Comment removed

  • @nienpien me three!!!!! 17. :)))))))

  • 1:59 reminds be of Air on G string, so beautiful...

  • Is that conductor a Sith lord? J/k Beautiful music.

  • @nberlanga looks like Lorin Maazel

  • yes. He's a Maazel :)

  • Gotta love the trumpet mute. My husband uses a Crown Royal bag for his trumpet's mute at times; he says it's the best.

  • this is Lorin Maazel. In this concert Maazel led the orchestra in renditions of both USA and North Korean National Anthems, the New World Symphony (Dvorak, No. 9) and closed with a Korean folk tune, Arirang. (taken from wikipedia)

  • is this Gyorgy Sebok?

  • Does anybody know Who is this conductor?

  • @beena001 Lorin Maazel

  • Where's Lady gaga? In the garbage.

  • The first 45 seconds of this clip are in my humble opinion, THE BEST lines of music ever written. Why the trumpet was muzzled, not sure. those notes need to peel out like Gabriel sound the final moments of the world.

  • The first 45 seconds of this clip are in my humble opinion, THE BEST lines of music ever written. Why the trumpet was muzzled, not sure. those notes need to peel out like Gabriel sound the final moments of the world.

  • @aa4285 In my humble opinion, you're right on the money!

  • @aa4285 RIGHT. I completely agree. what is Phil Smith, the greatest trumpet player possibly to grace this planet, thinking?! you OBVIOUSLY have much more experience and musical knowledge than him. he obviously must have forgotten that stupid bag on his bell. its DEFINITELY not a mute used for a certain tone quality/ effect or anything.

sorry bud. but if you want notes peeling out like Gabriel in the final notes of the world, try listening to the last few minutes of mahler symphony no. one.

  • @bugleboy499 I agree about the Mahler 1st but the Mahler 8th finale is nothing to sneeze at either.

  • @aa4285 Oh, absolutely. That is probably my favorite part of this whole piece if not one of my favorite pieces of music in general.

  • @aa4285 ugh soooo true. so good. im obsessed with that section

  • GENIAL!!!!

  • I love it!!!

  • Don't you just love the Tuba player's facial expressions at 8:30:)?

  • the lady at 3:05 always makes me smile, how she just bobs her head, even if it's slightly, and even if it's North Korea. she's enjoying the music very much :)

  • ...there are no words to describe how amazing this piece is... Gershwin rocked - he just did!

  • God bless you ! My father ( dead in 1998 ) played this song in his piano and had a LP ( Long Player ) . You made me remember my father....God bless you !

  • love tuba soloist's eyebrows at about 8:40. amazing.

  • THis is so absolutely incredible--I just found the best video on Youtube! Thank you and also, thank you!!

  • I love how the audience looks completely bored. LOL. How can they just sit there like that?

  • @PoshLumberjack

    Let's Dance!

  • @tvastar Yes, let's! We could waltz or do the Charleston. We could do a hot honey rag (high five if you get that reference). If you're feeling ambitious we could attempt some swing dancing. Or we could just slow dance from side to side. =)

  • @PoshLumberjack north koreans with any sense of individuality are in danger of being watched by the gov aka Kimmy bear

  • @PoshLumberjack Did you think the audience is made up of real people? Silly, silly...they're just robots!

  • Great musicians. Great composer. Great music.

Love the trumpet solo around 1:00. Just wondering what is the bag over the bell (as shown in the video.) Is that notated in the music and what does it do for the tone?

And the sax licks, love them (especially as a T. Sax player.)

So many great runs and melodies, there's just too much to love to say it all.

  • @robxbff The bag over the trumpet is used as a sort of a mute. I'm playing an arrangement in school and it says to use a felt cap I think. Just used to muffle the sound a little.

  • He's playing on a trumpet in C as well, not a normal Bb, C trumpets are larger bore and produce a livelier tone as well, the tuning slide is shorter, making them a whole step higher in timbre.

  • 5:14 sounds and feels great XDD

  • this is my favorite movement, hands down. i love gershwin.

  • como se mueve el abuelo..si señor...grande maestro!

  • 7:03 is quite enjoyable!

  • this song makes me smile

  • some of the world'd best musicians. :)

  • I love this oh soo much. It makes the day seem entirely enchanting and agreeable )

  • i get to play that trumpet solo in band!

  • Gershwin sure was brilliant wasn't he?

  • @Director632 This is possibly the greatest comment on youtube.

  • this is the best!

  • Haha I like the man at 6:45

    He seems pretty happy. :)

  • Wow, the audience looks positively stony-- When it reached the point with the lady in the pink outfit bobbing her head a bit, I practically cheered.

  • Hahahaha...uneventful wood block camera shot @ 0:32

  • BUT THE WOOD BLOCK WASN'T DOING ANYTHING!!!!! If he was playing, then it'd be cool, but it's just him sitting there...

  • Lol exactly...of all the musicians in the orchestra... -_-"

  • lmfao... i read this comment and when it came to the woodblock i just started cracking up in my seat..i wish they had people work the camera who knew the piece of music..especially since its fucking gershwin COME ON. lol.

  • @procrastination100 lol still great music

  • @procrastination100

Nice catch! hahahaha... what will the wood block do next!!!???

  • @procrastination100 how bout the awkward first 12 seconds of this part haha....the camera guys sucked for this event

  • @procrastination100 XD only in soviet korea XDDDDD

  • @procrastination100 dude that is the most epic scene ever

  • those asians look totally disinterested

  • Phil is swinging the hell out of that solo!

  • I think it is right?

  • is that Phil Smith on trumpet?

  • yes it is

  • Un vero capolavoro!

    Grazie

    Sal

  • I think this peace expressed the light-hearted and constantly inspired side to America to the North Korean audience. :)

  • Trumpet ftw :D

  • Excellent! Very fast... fascinating!

  • formidable

  • Don't be hatin' on the North Koreans...haha, I think they're just trying to be respectful to the performers.

  • this is really has the most swing of all, but you would never know with Maazel. At 5:15 he hqs no swing in 4. Not sure who is more stonefaced-the conductor or the audience. But he players know how to keep the tradition alive.

  • What an outstanding performance! The trumpet solo and the saxphones were probably the best I'd ever heard on this piece!

  • Comment removed

  • Alan Baer! 8:31

  • This amazing piece makes every instrument sound absolutely beautiful. I just can't comprehend how Gershwin did it! And I'm sure deep down in the North Korean hearts, they're feeling the music as much as we can express it. Just give them time :)

  • all u have to do to understand Stalinism is look at this No Koran audience, i mean robots

  • i swear i was thinking the same thing, but i think its not so much stalinism as it is their disipinary standards taught aforethoght

  • i mean robots....you sound like a lot of people,

"all you have to do to understand ... "

  • @pyschobabel lolwut

  • Gershwin is AMAZING (my favorite American composer)...his music is so cool and jazzy, but it also retains the structure and transparency of classical music. Too bad he couldn't write a violin concerto for Heifetz...he really knew how to write for violin...

This and Rhapsody in Blue are the my favorite American peices....

  • Just like a sassy Yank to dance around Paris like the world was his playground. Quintessentially American and a very American piece of music. I love it!

  • Sweet Tuba solo <3

  • Did I mention that I was in love with Gershwin. Amazing Piece!!!!!!

  • What a creative solo for the trumpet! I have never heard it played like that! wonderful

  • the violin at 8:15 and tuba solo afterwards sound amazing..

  • wtf...at least get the applause in!

  • wonderful

  • Fucking North Korea I feel so sorry for all these poor people!

  • Comment removed

  • crazy? :D

    its not to fast...never

  • the trumpet solo towards the first half is my absolutely favorite part of this piece, but the theme is lovely also.

  • It's my favourite too! ^_^

I love the soft, jazzy feel!

  • I'm always dissapointed when the trombones in some symphonies dont do their little slide at that big climatic part, but this symphony did it well.

  • you know what, i feel the same way

  • 7:12 is my favorite!!!!

  • Again! the TUBA is rocking it out. And the Bassoons sounds so awesome.

  • love the bit that starts at 5:20 <3 Gene Kelly's performance was awesooome.

  • Ah, the first half of this is so beautiful. I used to lie in bed with my eyes closed listening to that section in high school. It just sweeps you away!

  • The trumpet solo on the very first minute always brings me to tears. This music piece is simply beautiful.

  • Phil Smith played it, he's an absolutely wonderful player.

  • Totally. His solo is superb. Thanks for the information!
