  • Quite a remarkable man, left us before his time, Dr. Sagan you are truly missed!

  • Are you a socialist? Wow! In America that's like asking if someone is a paedophile...

  • Is Ted Turner really trying to fuck with Carl Sagan??? Is Carl Sagan gonna have to slap a bitch?!?!

  • TED SEEMS TO BE FALLING IN LOVE WITH CARL AT 1:07! :)

  • @tabarnak1985 nothing wrong with falling in love with carl sagan. I truly love him and miss him

  • Sagan has so much class and composure. What an inspirational person

  • Can anyone be amazing and count the time carl blinks? XD XD

  • Temporal Paradox. This is the problem with time travel. Google it.

  • @SunsetRC Actually if you changed the historical events in the past then you'll end up back in time in a in an Alternate reality. Google that.

  • @Soonerg2121 Yes, but if you killed yourself back in time, then how would you go back in time in the first place? I mean, I wish not to argue about it. Just want to hear your point of view.

  • @SunsetRC Well the theory is that we have multiple universes which contains many alternate realities. So if you killed yourself back in time you can end up back in time in an earth where you grew up with out your parents. You might end back into present where the Time lines hasn't even changed one bit. You see in a Multiverse theory? The possibilities is endless and you can end up in a earth where everything is so peaceful and so advanced or end up in a place where no progress has occurred at all.

  • you can travl in the pass in a heart beat ,grab on Sagan string and ear is thought!!

  • Wow fuck ted turner he's dumb motherfucker

  • @explosionofsound, damn if he's a dumb motherfucker, then i wounder how mentally retarded you must be.

  • Sagan: *Plausible and morally righteous answer conflicting Ted Turner's interests*

Turner: Carl, do you believe in time travel?

    LMAO

  • It's interesting listening to this 22 years after it happened and ironic that the issues he talks about then are still hot issues now. For example, he says that it has been a decade since a moon landing and proclaims how ridiculous that is... 22 years later? How about a USA / Russian trip to Mars... 22 years later? Global warming... 22 years later?

Most people in the world are stupid.

  • he is alot smarter than hawking

  • Ted Turner is a fucking clown. Uhhh Uhhh...shut up stupid. Not to mention you're part of the brainwashing campaign that is making people in your country stupid. Fuckin' corporate bullshitter. Looks like CNN back then is just as full of shit as it is now. I guess having Carl Sagan on the air saying real shit made them think twice about having informative guests afterwards. You can't herd smart sheep.

  • Notice how the issues then are still major issues today..

  • Carl Sagan is the reason I started wearing a suit and tie

  • Ted Turner spend an hour with this man. He didn't deserve a second.

  • Carl was 50 years ahead of his time. He will live forever in our hearts!!

  • 7:40 Best reaction ever! Carl Sagan is the man! Helping to set the standard for a glorious time in our history.

  • Hahaha!! 6:09 aaa.. That's a good point.

  • 5:54... i think mr. turner broke into a sweat " making rich people richer.."

  • CARL!!!! We miss you and need you now :(

  • Sagan is my hero

  • Sagan or O'Reilly? Take your choice

  • @mzyzer19 O'Reilly as in the Fart Factor on Fox Bill O'Reilly? SAGAN ALL THE WAY!

  • First time of ever hearing this guy speak today. I think I have a new hero. Really like his thinking.

  • @SoundsSoSavage look up pale blue dot. His most famous speech. It brings tears to your eyes.

  • Ted Turner is a piece of shit. He is the largest private landowner in the United States-- owning approximately two million acres (8,000 km2), greater than the land areas of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. How disgusting is that ?

  • CAPTAIN PLANET!!!

  • 7:38

~ Just loved Sagans 'WTF?' - Face.

Carl Sagan was the most outstanding human being on earth. Too bad nobody listened to him, we destroy our Pale Blue Dot. I love Carl Sagan and miss him dearly. If heaven really exists (which I don't think, however) I wish to meet him there.

  • "Carl are you a socialist"

Ugh, what is it with people and their dichotomous views? One can be capitalist in regards to computer technology, clothes, cosmetic products etc but also socialist in regards to things like healthcare, sanitation etc.

  • @TurboDally I think the question was fair. Carl was a great man, but someone as intelligent as him should easily realize that the rich have a much easier time increasing their wealth than the poor, regardless of what government does. Returns on an investment of 1 million dollars will be much greater than those on 1000 dollars. Even if the government taxes these gains a great amount, like 70%, they will still increase their wealth at a greater rate.

  • @Seamonky72

....fair? You gotta be joking. It had the same value as "Carl, are you taking drugs?" or "Carl, are you gay?". Huh.

  • @washcloud no it didnt. and those questions are pointless, carl appears to be a straight man, (had a wife and son.) as for the drug question, Carl kept it no secret that he used marijuana. Nothing wrong with either question, or either answer.

  • @Seamonky72

Do you know what trolling is? Turner's question was nothing but trolling.

  • @washcloud No, this was a civil and reasonable interview. Asking the question provided a great avenue for discussion and allowed Carl to more clearly explain his viewpoint.

  • @Seamonky72

No matter what the overall interview was, when Sagan referred to "rich people", Turner felt obliged to strike back with a below-the-belt-blow. So typical of a capitalist. Nothing to do with viewpoints. It's just hard for you to see.

  • @washcloud Well you don't know what trolling is.

  • @monokhem

Well typing down a comment to a to a 5-month post sure smells like such

  • This man was the best of us.

  • CARL, DO YOU THINK TIME TRAVEL'S POSSIBLE? lamo

    fuck ted turner.

  • The causality problem Dr. Sagan describes here cannot be better summed up than in the movie Back To The Future. Michael J. Fox's character, through no fault of his own, almost caused his parents not to fall in love with each other; and hence, almost obliviated himself.

If time travel is possible in the distance future, I hope that some sort of "Prime Directive" will be put in place to prevent these kinds of events from ever happening.

  • 7:35

I haven't face-palmed that hard in awhile. Ted Turner, you capitalist, ignorant, wage slavory supporting, propagandist fuck, you are everything wrong with this world.

  • What are you thinking at 0:58 Ted?

  • FYI. He's not referring to Star Wars the movies.

  • @oisiaa Yeah, unfortunate that wasn't clarified further in the interview. Many of the younger Sagan enthusiasts might not understand the difference.

  • "I'm not sure what a socialist is...but I believe that the government has a responsibility to care for the people..... - - making people self-reliant"

  • Way to change the subject when Carl says something you don't like Turner... Real classy.

  • What is wrong with asking what political stance he takes?

Carl Sagan is a big thinker and a very influential person.

There is absolutely a relevance to asking about his political views.

Carl Sagan is just not a scientist, hes a person and a thinker.

What is more important is the mind blowing venus comparison.

Of course it is closer but its very interesting to see.

  • "The rich have too much money." "Moving right along, Carl do you think time travel is possible?"

  • Whaaaaaaaaa wuhhaaaaaaa wuhhhhhhaaaaaa

  • I want to slap Ted Turner for fiddling with his papers .. listen to Carl you nab ..

  • If you go back in time at all, wouldn't you stop yourself from going back in time because back at that point in time you hadn't gone back in time?

  • Truly a prophetic conversation. Carl must be turning in his grave--21 years later Reagan's voodoo economics still gospel, military industrial complex and big banks still sucking the the life out of the country, rich still getting richer, middle class gone, earth getting warmer and closer to to Venus-like state. If there's ever a "first human to clone" its CS lets do it and make him president :)

  • "Are you a socialist?" says Ted. What a prick.

  • A true voice of reason. A wonderful writer and a very imaginative and brilliant scientist. RIP Carl Sagan

  • I disliked the interviewer.

    (I liked Carl Sagan :)

  • @Kabukita Ya, you can tell he was part of the problem back then and people like him are part of the problem now. "Are you a socialist?" Asshole.

  • Too bad there isn't another planet I could move to in case of Sarah Palin becomes president.

  • It's astounding how much time Sagan is allowed to answer a complex, open-ended question. He provides lucid, illuminating and exciting answers. He doesn't shy from realistic appraisals based on his knowledge. Today, he'd be cut off within thirty seconds, before developing a single valid point. Maybe that's why scientists get so little credit among the public these days: no one gives them enough time to blow anybody's mind.

  • How awesome. This Ted Turner guy is obviously a dumbass compared to Carl Sagan. He jumped on Sagan for suggesting the Capitalist system is flawed as it favours the rich by asking him if he was a Socialist. I'm glad Sagan answered that he doesn't really know what Socialism is because it shows that if you are intelligent enough you can work out for yourself what kind of system is preferential for the benefit of everyone, instead of just blindly protesting something because of propaganda.

  • Thing that bothers me lately is that wise/smart humans on this planet dont get enough space on the media to speak out. Politicians and media are connected together, And they throw enough crap in your face to keep you dumb (look at their campagnes). We need people like Carl Sagan and others to look at the brighter picture, to see our own planet and the universe cause till this day everything is connected to money and greed. Just my view on the whole thing (which is way bigger) :) RIP Carl

  • hey this is earth here... carl i miss u.. R.i.P

  • Sagan's poetry is wonderful -- that combination of his velvety, rich voice and his way with imagery. I started to watch Cosmos as a kid -- I loved Star Trek and loved the sciences, but you have to capture the imagination. The sciences are infinitely more fascinating than any dogmatic scripture, and Sagan was brilliant at attracting and alluring people into those mysterious worlds. We have to offer people that kind of allure, too, or they will fall prey to prayer.

  • I would hate to meet anyone who dislikes this.

  • Turner is not qualified to host this interview. He might do well on George W Bush. But not Carl Sagan.

  • WOW! Ted almost came out of his chair when Sagan blamed rich people for being, well, self-serving.

  • Now I am convinced. U.S government killed him.

  • 5:55 and on to the bullshit

  • We need to start broadcasting things like this to people instead of the BS like the lifestyles of celeberties. What Sagan is saying is STILL relevant today, and most people should have knowledge about this. He is right...Earth is the only planet we have.

  • We need him very much.

  • One thing comes to mind when i think of Carl Sagan, and I think salt and peppa said it best when they said" What a man"

  • Turner's an idiot!

    Sagan FTW!

  • The comment about Venus' green house gas effect was one to remember.

  • lmaaao talk about jump to a different subject. BOY he couldn't get off the topic about how selfish america is fast enough. He knew he could not defend american policy against the likes of Carl"his mind" Ohh shit, how do I get off this topic before my bosses get mad at me ahh hmmm ahh Time travel. ok as soon as Carl finishes his sentence I will just jump right in it. lolol What a pussy

  • im not sure what a socialist is. what a badass

  • the greatest president america never had. what a truly majestic man he was. i wish he was still here.

  • carl segan is a prophet.

  • 7:35-7:40

    LMAO

  • That was pretty funny. He made no comment on what Carl said about poverty and education, just changed the subject as soon as he could.

  • I always felt guilty about liking the movie "Contact". I hadn't realised that it was Sagan's story... no wonder I like it.

  • Why guilty? It's one of my favourite SF movies.

  • there are 6 billion people in the world, 19k watched the video, 9k understood more then the language itself , 100 posted it, and one made it ...or is it backwards. if not it should.

  • 3:40 Hot Heads and paranoids... Lol I wonder who are they in his mind....

  • There are alot of really interesting questions.

  • Very few people spellbind me when I hear them speak. But Sagan definatly does.

  • Sagan should have been President in the 80's instead of Ronnie!.

  • @ProsperityGlobal haha it was by the grace of God on mankind that this man wasent president, the same goes to Al Gore. Al Gores head is full of c02

  • @ProsperityGlobal He was much too smart to get mixed up in politics.

  • @ProsperityGlobal Its a shame though that they were both in their prime from a political stand point at the same time because "Ronnie" was really the last decent president America has had in the last couple decades.

  • the human race is comprised 100% of morons. see i can make blanket statements too.

sagan was a smart guy, and to say otherwise is just ignorant. doesn't mean you worship the guy to give him credit for being a bright mind.

  • Are you a socialist

  • We've been controlling weather for over 40 years. California sold it's water to S. Calf. & turned the bread basket of the world, a desert.

That valley produced 40% of the world's food. Now 38,000 farmers have been standing in line for 2 years just to be able to get food for themselves.

  • "Other countries care more about their babies than we do".

    "Hmmm . . . Carl, is time-travel possible?"

I love how abrupt that change of mood was. :D

  • I laughed so hard I was in TEARS when he said that along with seeing sagan's suppressed laughter. It really caught me off guard XD

  • Carl Sagan is right. Rich men like Ted Turner get richer while the rest of us get poorer. God Bless Sagan for saying that to Turner's face.

  • Sagan is so articulate and honest. He was really an incredible person. We need men like him more than ever.

  • Agreed, and I think we all need to step up and do what is necessary.

  • I love how he talked about how exploration of space is important.

  • I like how Turner goes from "Are you a socialist?" to "Carl, do you think time travel is possible?"

  • actually i think it speaks volumes in favor of turners character. not saying he was a hell of a guy but think about it. he is a rich man who believes in strong captialism. he kinda got caught up with the socialist veiws and asked it. but after hearing sagans beautifully poetic answer he knew he couldnt argue with it. knew sagan was a much wiser man than he. instead of digging in and ruining a very good discussion, because of being stubborn. sagan does have a humbling presence about him

  • LOL, at 1:01 Ted Turner looks like he has a crush on Carl.

    sry, thought that was funny.

  • Lmao. My grandpa thinks Sagan "is a tool of Satan."

I guess caring for humanity and the individual, free thinking, and practical skepticism are not things not to be desired.

  • Things not to be desired by your Grandfather. :D

  • These are admirable qualities, but I have yet to see a self-described "skeptic" or "freethinker" who doesn't virtually worship Sagan and similar thinkers. Worshipping similar thinkers. Free thinkers. Worshipping SIMILAR thinkers. FREE thinkers. Say it over and over a few times until you begin to see the problem here.... A cult is a cult, whether the leader's title is Pope, Father, Grand Dragon or Doctor. Sagan was a pretty good guy, overall, but that's all he was. I've met better.

  • I know plenty of of self declared free thinkers who don't care much for Sagan, but I know what you mean.

  • Sorry, I just realized how snotty my original message sounds. Kudos for catching my point despite that!

  • You're right, though.

  • Yeh I understand what you mean although Carl Sagan is a great popularizer of science. In terms of scientific achievements he isn't as great as say Richard Feynman or Paul Dirac yet people see him as one of the greatest scientists of the century. He's the greatest popularizer of science I'd say and he's made great discoveries regarding the atmosphere of Venus but I think people need to take into account all scientists and not just focus on Sagan and I'm sure Sagan would want that as well.

  • "are you a socialist?" what the hell is that idiot Ted Turner trying to insinuate? that was completely out of context... what a jerk.

  • 'joining the countries together in a grand common endeavour on the behalf of the human species'

... carl sagan is my hero

  • logic never goes out of fashion

  • wow.why the hate for carl? burn in hell ted

  • Haha, I saw that Socialist question coming.

  • I wish Carl Sagan was alive today. We desperately need him.

  • If Carl was alive today, he should be Barack Obama's science advisor.

  • Carl knew politics was a charade, so no he never would be.

  • understatment of the decade!

  • @CranesNotSkyHooks

    Me too man.

  • @CranesNotSkyHooks

We don't need Sagan. His legacy and words live on. We need YOU to make a difference.

  • @CranesNotSkyHooks i agree in EVERY way possible...we need him and maybe george washington as well

  • @CranesNotSkyHooks More of us could try emulating him. Be examples for other people. It's hard work and not for everyone, but those who are able to, should consider it.

  • Humans aren't going to move out into space. Not now, not ever. Only twelve humans visited the moon and that is all ... there shall not be any more.

Mars is out of the question based upon the expense and the intrinsic danger involved in travelling such large distances and attempting to live in such a harsh environment.

Humans evolved on the Earth and humans will go extinct on the Earth. There's no future for humankind in space. Nor on the Earth for that matter.

  • at least you've got the right attitude fucker!

  • You're quite the downer. What you're saying is exactly what people said about going to the moon a long time ago. But guess what? We went there. And when we finally get to Mars, people like you will say, "Oh, we'll never colonize it." But give us enough time, and we will. We are genetically programmed to be curious, to wander and explore. That's how we evolved. Of course the human race is headed for extinction - but who is to say we can't make the most out of our brief existence in the meantime?

  • Humans stopped going to the moon a long time ago and we couldn't return even if we wished. Colonizing the moon is out of the question, too.

Humans visiting/colonizing Mars is pure science fiction and nothing else. No amount of technology would serve to render such a trip possible and the costs and resources involved are prohibitive.

Humankind might want to make the most out of our species's existence but our species is quickly running out of time. Extinction is fast approaching.

  • But the point is, as technology advances, it will become more possible to travel larger distances, for example, to Mars. And maybe even colonize it. And with humans living on 2 different planets, there would be less chance of us becoming extinct. All we need is time. But maybe you're right, maybe we'll wipe ourselves out before we get that chance. Knowing human beings, that's a definite possibility.

  • Fine. Be a nihilist.

  • awesome little physics/time travel quirk. although i think carl is as much a victim of the times as anyone of that day. physics matters ONLY TO US on the earth. its like going to mars and using our methods to try and explain why mars has longer/shorter days and whatnot. i think that is our curse right there, we keep trying to explain everything using our science and whatnot, its worthless in the galaxy

  • 100years before his time maybe more i think hopefully at least a few people have listened to and understood him maybe we could get out the mess we are in

  • Escuchenlo atentamente y demos nuestro grano de arena para que no mueran sus palabras.

  • Carl Sagan is so gracious, he's light years ahead of Ted in terms of intellect.

  • Carl Sagan is such an amazing man, I miss him so much.

  • he talks like obama lol

  • by that you mean he thinks of what he's going to say instead of talking out of his ass, then yes... that's why he pauses...

  • The only difference is Mr. Sagan is actually smart. Obama practiced sounding like this just to sound smart.

  • Conservatives are weepy sore losers, aren't they?

  • lol wtf @ his random time traveling question.

  • haha that was such a badly timed question.

  • Ted 'the man 'Turner looks so baffled ha ha

  • Is a socialist so bad? I think precisely we need such spirit right now.

  • Socialism by itself isn't so bad. The problem is what is has always become throughout history.

  • Are half the kids below the poverty line nowadays?

  • Space, The Final Frontier.

  • Carl Sagan`s statements;

"This is the only world we`ve got".

"We have nowhere else to go".

    Very powerful statements.

  • Goddamnit. We have dumber, more megalomaniacal Bush in the WH, Iran is working on nukes and many Muslims think they can bring about armageddon, North Korea may already have nukes, we have more than enough to wreak all kinds of havoc, MANY Christians in America believe they know that Jesus is coming back in the next fifty years and so think that environmentalism is a waste of time...

    WE ARE FUCKED

No maybe, no if we just pull together we can blah blah blah, we are fucked!

  • I love it!!!!We are fucked!!!!

  • Ok. That seems a little gloom. And to make generalizations about, ooh, a billion or so people (muslims) is grossly irresposible. North Korea even 4 months ago is no longer the danger that Bush declared they were. "Many Christians believe the end is coming". Well "many" people also believe elvis was abducted by aliens. So "many" is not the consensus of the general public. So take that fear-mongoring somewhere else.

  • Excuse me for assuming that you wouldn't read "muslims" as "all muslims".

    btw, that's not fear-mongering, that's pessimism.

  • whatever you wanna call it

  • Wow, color me refuted.

  • Carl should have been president of the United States

  • "Carl should have been president of the United States" - You're so right.

  • Ron Paul should be, but Carl Sagan is another good canidate.

  • RON PAUL/ CARL SAGAN 08!!!

  • lol that would be awesome. 2 scientists(ron paul was a doctor too) beating the shit out of the new world order. Too bad sagan is dead and ron paul is screwed for the presidential bid. But we have to rise up soon anyway to defeat them.

  • That would have been great for mankind.

  • @Doc228 definately!

  • maybe he did that on purpose...it seems like no matter what happens and what anybody says...people continue their habits and we are getting closer and closer to seeing extremely tragic results...Carl Sagan was just trying to make everybody realise how dangerous this is...it might not be totally true but it's probably the only way he could have reached anybody. and even now people don't do shit about it

  • Do you pretend to be more knowledgable than Carl Sagan in any aspect of science or egology? He dedicated his life to uncovering FACTS about Earth and space in a scientific way, he amassed over 6000 volumes of research results. I suspecet by your comments Rush Limbaugh is your scientific mentor.

  • I must reply to you as a student of the world and tell you in this universe, what is best for your children? When you argue against your children, then why argue? But apparently we love our illusions over truth, which we know works. I would love to speak to you over this and gather your thoughts. I am,

  • cherylgraham2: I am so happy you discovered Carl Sagan. I discovered him in the early 80s, when he had a TV show called Cosmos. I have read most of his books since then, and mourned his passing. Let's keep his memory alive!

  • Today is the 1st time that I have heard of Carl Sagan, I came across Pale Blue Dot this am. I am in awe of the man - he was brilliant in his science and his sense of humanity. The world became poorer the day that this great man died. Thank you Carl Sagan, may your legacy live on.

  • he will be missed...

  • was so funny when sagan was going on about how bad the education system is in the U.S. and Teds like...Carl...Is Time TravelPossible?? giving him that dreamy look!!!! carl started to giggle!! ROFFLE.
