euros outmatched world in this contest....canada actually has so many players they are the world and dont need the US but picture pavel bure on DETROIT....OHHHH MY FUCK
Bure and Fedorov were the 2 best players I have ever seen. Nobody came close. Stick Pavel Bure in 1981 and he would have doubled Gretzkey's numbers. Fedorov was the most talented I have ever seen no question about it.
he was abused by the old nhl, just holding and all the wear and tear, blasting through all that shit to still get breakaways, and just the slashing, the initial injury was on board play(95 canucks vrs oilers), which now would of ended in a powerplay and ejection, cost bure his career just 8 years later.
Didn't he only "lose" the fastest skater competition because they counted it when Amonte reached out and broke the laser line with his outstretched stick? Or was that the next year?
Not really... They are equal to what they were... The average shot is a shade under 100 and some players get 100 or over. Al Macinnis put a composite stick to the test, and that year he didn't even hit 100 when he was in the comp. Next season, went back to wood... struck >100.
These days we see 6'9" ogres breaking records... But all in all the competition hasn't changed much... We see minimum 90, maximum a shade over 100... It has been that way from day one.
its not the sticks? cmon now u cant say a sherwood shitter from 1990 can shoot as fast as a s19, no matter what player holds it, its the same players every year, if anything they get weaker because theyre like 40 now instead of 30,
Bure was the full package of a hockey player. The only thing he didnt do was hit or be physical. But he was an animal and a pure sniper on the ice you couldnt stop him just hoped to contain him somehow. 94mph still awesome for a player like Bure. Usually in the hardest shot competition you would see mostly defenseman or big offensive fowards who were strong and can smoke the puck. Bure had a hard accurate slapshot and the scary part was his wrist shot was even better.
your slapshots harder with a wooden stick because there generally stiffer (by composite standards in reality a wood shaft is like a 120 flex plus) and there a lot heavier. The weight adds to the force hitting the puck, however wrist shots are harder for people who shoot properly because they load much better.
For naturally good shooters, the sticks don't make that big a difference. Al McInnis and Al Iafrate were hitting trips with wood. McInnis actually switched back to wood from composite at one point because he said his shot was harder with the wood stick.
Too bad this guy had to call it a career at such a young age. He was definitely one of the best players in the NHL, especially during his time in Vancouver and Florida
@gajemoederpesten He was? Last time I checked he was skating around at center ice when the other team was basically passing around the puck on a 5 on 4 powerplay. He could skate and he could score, but he lacked team effort and heart and was never close to being an MVP on his team. This is one player we will not be seeing in the HHOF because of his selfishness.
@KoivuTheHab So what? Last time I checked he was scoring 50 to 60 goals playing for the Florida FUCKING Panthers. Oh and guess what? After he left for New York have you ever seen any player on the Panthers roster who can even be considered close to being a franchise player? I HAVEN'T (except for Luongo I guess). Maybe he's never been the best defensive player but who cares if you're talking about a guy who scored nearly 800 points in 700 games including two 60-goal seasons? Pavel ---> HHOF
@gajemoederpesten He played over 25 minutes a game taking strides only in one direction. The Panthers were shit long before Bure came along and they were still shit when he was there and after he left. Luongo was still developing when he left Florida, he wasn't an elite goalie. All top players from the era have a point per game average, it's not that amazing. Bure couldn't have told defensive hockey from a russian prostitute, that's how useless he was in his own end.
@KoivuTheHab Well, that was my whole point about Luongo, he wasn't even a top goalie yet when he played in Florida (even though they would've lost every game with 10 goals against if it wasn't for his solid goaltending). Bure was explosive, electrifying and exciting while scoring goals for a team that SUCKED. Again, he's obviously not the best two-way player the game has ever seen but he definitely showed hockey fans a combination of speed, skill & excitement that nobody ever witnessed before
@gajemoederpesten Then why do you mention Luongo as a franchise player for the Panthers? He was young when he left the team and the only reason they traded him was because he wasn't living up to the hype created by his high draft pick, in the manager's mind he was actually underperforming for a very weak team. Bure was an exciting player to watch when he had the puck, if he didn't have it he was a liability. I very much doubt he will ever make the HHOF, it's been 5 years without a whisper...
@KoivuTheHab I mentioned him as a franchise player because he was actually the ONLY player on the team playing decent. How on earth was he under performing making an average of 35 saves a night? If it wasn't for his shitty ass defencemen he probably would've won the Vezina for god's sake. If you wanna keep hating on Bure because he's Russian and your Finnish - be my fucking guest. But a two-time 60 goal scorer with a career plus/minus of +42 should never be called a liability
@gajemoederpesten Luongo was under performing because he was drafted 4th overall and Florida thought he was their saviour (in their managers mind), he was supposed to change the course of the whole ship singlehandedly. You can make 35 saves a night but that doesn't help much if you let in 3 goals a night in a low scoring era.
I don't give a shit what country Bure is from, he was a selfish player who especially later in his short career, was a liability to his team.
@KoivuTheHab Just because Bure wasn't a Selke contender doesn't mean that was a "selfish player." If his greatest asset to his team was being an offensive powerhouse, then so be it.
@cursedlemon It's obviously not automatic that you are a selfish player, however Bure was one of the most selfish players in the history of the game. He never put any effort into his defensive game, no in training nor in games, he didn't care about becoming a better all around player. Another thing evident with Bure was that he always shot the puck, even if a teammate was in a much better scoring position. Selfish to the bone I say... With more heart he could have been great.
@KoivuTheHab So what you're saying is the most important things in hockey to be good at are:
- studying books called 'How to become a Selke contender'
- making sure you always pass the puck rather than shooting it (even if that would result in scoring 20 goals instead of 60)
- making sure you always backcheck with a skating speed of Sidney Crosby looking for lipgloss (not realizing that may cost you the energy you would've used in an offensive rush 10 seconds later)
yeah he can shoot harder...the first shot hewas just warming up, and he stumbled on the second one and still shot 94.4...so I bet he could have hit triple digits at least 96-97ish
euros outmatched world in this contest....canada actually has so many players they are the world and dont need the US but picture pavel bure on DETROIT....OHHHH MY FUCK

Look at a player from 1990 and look at the players now.
They are huge in comparison.
Yes the stick does make a difference, but the player does as well.
