In the Roman Empire, the city was known as Portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium. A well known one is that the original name was Sant Anderio (like Saint Andrew)... and with time it changed into Sant Ander --> Santander. Other theory says that its present name is derived from Saint Emeterio (Santemter, Santenter, Santander), a martyr whose head was brought there in the 3rd century, along with that of Saint Celedonio, according to legend... :))

I lived there for four months as an Erasmus exchange student in the University of Cantabria and I'm never gonna forget this experience. Santander becomes the most beautiful place in the world as soon as the sun touch its surface. If you wanna visit it - do it in July or August! It's also a very cultural city... with many places to see many things to do. I fell desperately inlove with it for four months and I'll always love it. ... diras que se esta remodelando no? aun no este terminado, y lo triste es que en santander las zonas olvidades como mi calle, son el casco viejo, q ahora ya empiezan q reabilitar , pero cuantas casas se han caido en el rio de la pila y en el cavildo para que se arreglase, y mientras esas casas cuantas veces se a remodelado el paseo pereda, eso es lo que no me gusta de santander

y yo te digo, que una calle arreglada no es una acera nueva y un asfalto nuevo, o un funicular, solo hay que entrar en alguno de los pisos, que no todo es fachada
