Well kids, I say they were both influenced by Cat Steven's(now Yusuf Islam) song "Trouble" which certainly predates both Webb and Lamontagne. I think he may have written that song when these lads were still breast feeding. Great artists still, all three of them.
Regarding influences, Lamontagne etc. I always thought this was almost a dead rip-off of The Band, and all it does is reflect how much Lamontagne is influenced by that band. He is a solid songwriter....but not particularly original.
Hahaha....This guy's been playing longer than Ray Lamontagne's been on the scene thank you very much!! This is Derek Webb!! ...Don't even go there!! :o)
whoa i know how long he's been playing and I know who derek webb is thank you very much, BUT if you'll please step off your pedestal for one minute you'll give a listen to Ray Lamontagne's song called Trouble written more than two years ago that opens with, "Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble
Trouble been doggin' my soul since the day I was born"
And ask derek webb he'll tell you himself he's a ray fan, so with that said I went there and stand my ground that this song is influenced in part by ray lamontagne. :o)
It just makes no sense attributing Ray Lamontagne's influence over Derek or Caedmon's Call's writing of this song, just because of the word 'Trouble'. Don't get me wrong, I am a MASSIVE Ray fan. I went to see him last year in concert...his voice had me in tears, it was so powerful! And for the record, I DO hope Ray's influence produces many more artist's like himself.
I also wouldn't deny that Derek IS a fan of Ray: He has a guitar, awesome voice and poignant lyrics - what's not to be a fan off?
However, unless you have a quote of Derek or Caed's admitting to being directly influenced by Ray for this song, you need to give them a little more credit. No matter how many times Ray says Trouble in his song - other people can still sing about their troubles ;o)
youre right, just using the same first word is not exactly showing that he is abeing influenced by someone else and really, on top of all that, this song is very derek. ive been listening to him for a long time, and this is so derek. ray is good too, but derek has been derek for a long time:) and this is definitely derek, all the way;)
Wow, Derek Webb is a prophet! I got Overdressed yesterday and I do believe a comeback is here. The album is fantastic and I'm a Caedmon's Call fan from the 90's.
