my favorite when i was 14. probably cause i snuck out the family van! ive been sacrificing myself to christian rock sites like stryper and tellin them the true trinity are alive and well, RUSH!
Looking back now this is the pinnacle of Rush as a band. Signals was a great record and in many ways I like it more then MP, but man were they on here!! Alex's gear is so scaled back compared to what he is using now, and it just sits in the mix with that thick 70's analog warmth. It's nice to remember how effortless it once was for Geddy as well.
@JackOrion0670 I dont want Rush in there. Rush is too good for them. This music isnt for everybody. If they dont want them all the better then, the only people who will find them are people who actually have good taste in music.
Rush is a diamond in the rough. The most brilliant diamond one can find.
Who doesn't love to play this song driving down the countryside? Sometimes the very best place to be is alone in your car playing music and driving those roads all by yourself.
@MrRocknRollJoe Yeah the new album is gonna be here in 2011 and it's gonna be called Clockwork Angels. They've already released to songs from the album. Look up "Rush Caravan" and "Rush BU2B."
I was in 5th grade with Exit Stage Left came out. I've been a fan of Rush since I heard this song. It still gives me goosebumps after all this time. WOW.
@crazypenny94 That's what a car can represent viewed from diferent point of views, and the song is about this car and the freedom that the narrator experinences as he gets it and drives it.
@CrazyNights14 not to mention the 'futuristic' time setting where automobiles are illegal and the 'man' is flying an 'alloy air car' to chase him down in his classic Ferrari. It is a far out tune.
God i love this band. i am young so i didnt get to see them back when they put out those classic albums but i have seen them recently and let me tell you, they have lost none of the magic!
why would anybody press the dislike button if you like rush! you cannot press the dislike button if you like rush! if you don't, well, you can bite my shiny metal ass!
on the day i left home for good, this came on the radio just as we came into sight of the skyline downtown...i can never hear it with out having that feeling of joy that i had at that moment
I have a better title for this record: EXIT tubular bells, glockenspiel, wind chimes, temple blocks, timbales, bell tree, and triangles / ENTER Simmons electronic drum kit and one measly 13" timbale.
As usual, another awesome performance from the hardest workng rock band out there. I saw them in '84 and still rank as my #1 concert experience! That's saying something- I've been to over a hundred concerts! Better with age!
I have dvds and albums of many others too .. but here on youtube I am a freewatcher , not a freeloader and that's why I am annoyed sometimes when they block vids for "royalties reasons".. the record companies make enough money with artists already, and it's them who are afraid to lose cash. Artists often give songs for free on the web. Youtube is supposed to be here to share music and opinions.. and it should stay that way. :)
just saw them in Vancouver last week, thirty yrs after this video was done, hmmmm i think they have gotten better if they ever could, lifesons guitaring was incredible, peart goes without saying, and lee amazing, and yes i did see them in the 80s as well
NEIL PEART HAD A PHD IN MUSIC THEORY/COMPOSITION&WROTE MOST OF MUSIC/LYRICS..PURE GENIUS!!! @ ALVIN691 U GOT THAT RIGHT..I GREW UP SEEING/LISTENING/PLAYING EVERY SONG THIS TRIO CREATED.TILL THE POST93 STUFF,WHEN I GOT A JOB&A LIFE AS A STOCKBROKER- I STILL CRANK UP THE STRAT WHENEVER I WANNA BLOW OFF SUM STEAM.OUT ON MY BALCONY..2MY DELIGHT when im done all my neighbors are out on their balconies clapping...haha. I LOVE RUSH&ALL THEIR STUFF-BLINDFOLD ME& ILL PLAY EVERY SONG IN THEIR ANTHOLOGY
Does anyone get the overtones of the story behind the song? The motor law? The barbed wires? An old car, hidden in a barn? He commits his weekly crime?
@Alvin691 The future includes a "motor law", making cars like the Red Barchetta illegal. The uncle has kept one hidden for fifty-odd years and lets the nephew (i guess) drive it. The new alloy cars are too big and slow to catch it and he is able to drive it safely back to the barn :)
I'm ready to take a drive through the country this Sunday morning. I can see the sunlight on chrome and smell the oil and heat as the leaves flash above the asphalt at the S curve. Fire up ther willing engine and tires spitting gravel. No gleaming alloy air cars in my dream. I still go screaming through the valley.
I've watched the full concert on VHS (yeah, I still keep my old vhsplayer, haha) hundreds of times. Their live performance is absolutely perfect in this concert
love this .... 80's rock. one of the better bands as there weren't many really talented rock bands then. look at that drumset ... neil the way he punches that drum with speed. those solos are insane
man that outro alone should get them into the R&R hall of fame...that's one of the best things I've ever heard! I wish the album cut would end like that too, instead of just fading out
Christ that was fuckin' amazing. Goose bumps on my arms watchin' that. I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas morning for tomorrow's gig at the O2 in Dublin...
when you talk all time greats, when you talk Beatles,Stones,Zeppelin, elvis etc...please dont forget RUSH..........wow are they amazing or what, have heard and seen this a million times and it still feels brand new to me

Neil Peart fans / followers...serious question because I do not know. clowns who have no brains swear on here....my 8 yr old watches this vid and sees ming mongs writing profanity....not a bit of wonder the worlds in the state it is.....grow up.....just watch the song and enjoy....
Let's see....only 3 musicians making all of this sound....tapped harmonics on guitar to float over the bass playing the intro and outro (yeah, that happens a lot !!!)....with quite possibly the best rock drummer ever driving the whole thing, including the drum stick toss @ 2:03---2:06 just for good measure. Throw in a multitude of time changes, a key change or two, all played flawlessly. Just how amazing is Rush ?!? Peace:-)
@superbulldog81 Too bad two cycle engines emit too much CO2, so that's out too. We could all ride government approved bicycles and skateboards!!! So a quick trip that used to take 5 hours would now take,,, two days!! Just like grandad used to do when he was a lad!! So then there is that little agriculture problem... How to make food for 3 billion without technology... Al Gore has the answer, he invented the internet after all... Or was that invented to launch missiles in the 60's ? - I forget...
everything about this song rules. The tempo changes, (especially when the chase is on) the solo, the story-like lyrics... the whole mood of this song is amazing.
This song was inspired by a article in Road and Track, written by Richard Foster. Rush tried to contact Mr. Foster, but had to settle for a credit in the liner notes. After many years, Richard Foster discovered that the song was inspired by his story. After contacting Neil Peart, they discovered they shared a passion for BMW motorcycles. The amazing story that follows is, as Paul Harvey would say, the rest of the story....
@edetyg hmmm.... for some reason the link isn't working and the link I added later was removed. Go to the wikipedia page for Red Barchetta, and click on the link at the bottom of the page. It's titled "The Drummer, , the Private Eye, and Me"
I personally don't know what he's talking about, I always thought of my car as a extension of my dick ,not too much freedom with all the traffic laws. Rush is awesome, especially Neil Peart!
@Sangerz46 You've obviously never seen the Electric Light Orchestra, The Who, Pink Floyd, Chicago or Styx to name a few. Yes Rush is great,...but far from the greatest!!
@DeltaGaryGordon OK Earthdestroyer. Cars are only tools. I think if one puts any more value than that on a chunk of metal has nuts and bolts for brains and heart made of plastic.
Maybe this song is about freedom. I don't know. Maybe it is mass advertising/brainwashing to make everyone think that you gotta be seen in your motorcar.
I'd rather be seen on a horse, something normal chicks really dig.
@johanneandrick Funny that you say that, because this song also reminds me of my Uncle's country place, that no one knew about. He said it used to be a farm, well you know, before the motor law. Anyways, on Sundays I'd elude "the eyes" and hop the Turbine Freight, I'd go far outside "the wire" to where my white haired Uncle would wait for me. Well he's dead now, but he left me his (yep, you guessed it) cherry-red Barchetta.
@Slashdarocker, I have to say I 100% agree with prettynoose8497 response. The pop music world is designed to make money fast, get the masses to buy into it, and listen to it while hitting the clubs and parties. To add another point, think about how small a shelf life "the jonas brothers" and "justin Bieber " have, no way in creation will those "kids" have a career like RUSH has had, no way, mark my words, the next "pop" sensation will replace them, and in 5 years they will be has beens, fo sho
I saw Rush at the Cow Palace in the early 1980's. I don't think there's ever been a band that works harder and takes their music more seriously. They're still one of the best technical bands ever. And not only can Neil write. He can play like a demon. It's been 30 years and I still remember that show.
In 1980 a friend of mine had a red 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner with a 440 magnun tri-power motor ( 3 carburators ). At that time it was the fastest car I'd ever been in. Anyway , my buddy used to crank Red Barchetta on the cassette deck. Every time I hear this song I picture that car !
Back in the day... 3rd shift, Cutting steel all night at a machine shop. Lit up the night when this would come on the radio. Rush is the working mans music!
Neil Peart isn't a "drummer",he's a 'master percussion technician',it's almost like he treats it like a science.Best drummer ever, hands down-there aren't even enough people in his league to gather a "Best of..." !!!
My favorite Rush song, about a man going his own way and bonding with his uncle. There are shrieking tires, but no shrieking entitled women in this song.
I tried listening to the entire "Moving Pictures" album when I drove from Colorado to Minnesota. But my problem was I could NOT stop playing this song when I was doing 80 mph across Nebraska in my red Mustang :D
THE ULTIMATE DRIVING SONG!! :D

Rush - Red Barchetta
Playing at Madison Square Garden, New York on 04/10/11
Does this make anyone of you guys feel great, because you are going to see them on that day?

"The car is a methaphor for sexuality and freedom", what next, "A cup of coffee and going shopping is a simile for spirituality".
Those who abuse the earth will be abused by the earth.

@camlpg Tree Hugger. You obviously don't have enough sense to see what Neil was going for. Go listen to Nickelcrap.
DeltaGaryGordon 11 months ago
@DeltaGaryGordon OK Earthdestroyer. Cars are only tools. I think if one puts any more value than that on a chunk of metal has nuts and bolts for brains and heart made of plastic.
Maybe this song is about freedom. I don't know. Maybe it is mass advertising/brainwashing to make everyone think that you gotta be seen in your motorcar.
I'd rather be seen on a horse, something normal chicks really dig.

Rush are still proving to be one of the best three-piece outfits out there especially in the live arena.
They are still plying their trade with grace and a smile which is really good to see.
They have never had any "dillusions of grandeur" or "visions of splendor" as Neil would say. (Cinderella Man)

This song reminds me of my uncle's country place we would hang out and party.ah the teenage year's..
johanneandrick 11 months ago

Lots of car songs throughout the history of rock, but leave it to RUSH to create one that's deep.

Neil Peart isn't a "drummer",he's a 'master percussion technician',it's almost like he treats it like a science.Best drummer ever, hands down-there aren't even enough people in his league to gather a "Best of..." !!!

@esellori I love Niel too, but Terry Bozzio is definalty worthy of a "Best of.."

My favorite Rush song, about a man going his own way and bonding with his uncle. There are shrieking tires, but no shrieking entitled women in this song.
