Oh and why does every college kid all of the sudden feel that their voice must be heard? The world is a f*cked up place! Sucks but cant really do anything about it. Murder is illegal , but people will always do it. Fact of the matter is ppl dont want to hear unpleasant speech. But if they offend someone and get their ass kicked, i bet theyd sue while it happened during a time that violations were already occuring. guess 2 wrongs made a right!
Its for a good reason in my opinion. If just anyone were allowed to be on any part of campus practicing free speech then the students become subject to those who exercise that amendment IN a disruptive way. They aren't being disruptive. Religious beliefs aside, among one of the biggest disruptions of peace and quiet on campus is when those crazy guys come from churches and yell at everyone saying they are going to hell. Realistically amendments can not be expected to be completely fulfilled
This is lame. I sortof respect where they're coming from, but they really could be doing something more productive with their time at college. You can see it on their faces, they're like "Yeah, we just want to be assholes to prove somthing to ourselves." Allison Jaynes needs to lighten up.
All of America is a "free speech zone" I suggest all people who believe in the 1st amendment and free speech do not protest in their "zone"/when arrested you will be released later, if enough do it, they won't be able to get you all.
Last time I checked the First Amendment said (CONGRESS shall make no law etc etc etc...... Does it say that a school shall make no rule? The constitution doesent say anything about a college that is only enforcing it rules that the students have already signed a written agreement to abide by.
I went to UNCG in 2003 as part of an exchange program. Im from Mexico....and I remember how the Campus Police would throw us out of the soccer pitch while we were playin Sundays...all the international students...I mean...really?..the Campus Police?...you need the campus police to do that????...we were not in the Stadium...we were in the pitch next to it....But I loved UNCG...best times of my life.
And I went to UNCG for two semesters and am not really up to speed on where these free speech zones are found on campus but I'll guess one may be outside the library at the bus stop. At least that's where the Krazy Kristians stood on stools and yelled at me for being on my way to hell.
"Hey, hey. Ho, ho. Free speech zones have got to go."
Yeah, American universities are so rough. These students (including, of course, standard guy with college beard) gather together after being inspired by their freshman political science class to fight the system and just look how the university lays down the hammer! BRUTAL! [Cut to UNCG police looking ominous and ready to beat up black kids...probably?]
oh yeah I actually have some extra money to fly out to Sudan but I left it in my other pants. why don't you stop being a pig and let those concerned with preserving the constitution do their job?
How the hell does laying down on a sidewalk do anything about darfur? All it does is piss people off trying to get to class. Have a problem with the massacre? Fly out to the Sudan and do something about it.
Originally, the zones were created to protect the protesters and non-protesters from riots, and that's always going to be your counter arguer's main point: that the "cages" are there for your safety. As a college student, I can see your claim but think that protesting the zones is stupid. You've got to pick and choose your battles and understand how change works. Why not just have the zones moved or expanded? It would be easier to justify...
illegal action because they are in a free speech zone thus the university doesnt support free speech zones. according to the law she broke several laws and at least broke her own rule by opening her big mouth
UNCG's "free speech" policies are HORRIBLE! Especially towards outsiders. Outsiders have to have a group on campus sponsor them in order to speak on campus. In other words, you have to find someone on campus who likes you first before you can speak on campus. That is a PRIVATE campus policy, NOT public. Is there any update on this issue? I see that this was uploaded over two years ago...
The chanters needed to put a little EMOTION into it! Further, the First Amendment limits the power of Congress, not UNCG. Besides, it is their property and they can designate its use as they see fit. All you should want is more Free Speech Zones in more easily accessible areas, and claiming UNCG is an evil empire does not help.
Oh, and about that chant at the beginning...yeah, I saw "P.C.U." too. Ironically, that's a movie which ridicules campus protest. "Those aren't women, Tom. Those...are womenists."
More self-centered self-important liberal nonsense. Forget rules! Forget policy! We're paying to go here (or our parents are), so we should get to do anything we want, anytime we want, anywhere we want! The guy even said the university usually doesn't enfore the policy, but because they dared to even put on paper...we must march! I don't care which political party you belong to: public protest (marching, rallying) is a futile, self-serving gesture. It's whining, not engagement.
yeah, i used to go to this school, and I swear there was a protest about something practically every day. It's just a bunch of people who want others to notice them. They have nothing to protest so they decided to protest about where they could protest. Completely stupid.
ROFL "a marketplace of new ideas". Capitalism is so intertwined in this culture it`s insane. You study in the outlook of enriching yourself not actually to make a contribution to the world. Right on!
Whose property is this? Who pays for it? Dumpy nazi psychology beastie there sure doesn't -- she gets paid to work there. Figure it out folks, and don't ask permission and don't bother trying to change policy! It won't work. Narrow bureaucratic minds won't agree. By arguing with these creeps you have already given them victory.
"We have these rules for a reason," "You don't want to give people the wrong idea," "What would happen if everyone spoke their mind wherever they wanted?" Learn how to challenge *these* statements without referencing the Constitution -- these poor undereducated students don't understand the difference between "Congress" and "UNC". Free Speech isn't a location, not subject to any zone or physical location where there is air to breathe -- it's a state of mind.
Obviously you don't understand that regardless of whether or not this is being restricted by what party, the university still has some responsibility legally, andm orally, to uphold our righs to a reasonable degree.
Sez who? Which rights? Where is it written? Even in the unlikely event that it is written somewhere, you can't force someone to take some alleged "responsibility" that they don't want - at least not by staging these silly protests. If you want real results, do 2 things. First, get a clue and stop talking about the 1st amdt. Your university is not Congress, or any part of the fed govt. 2nd, talk to rich alumni, and get them to withhold donations until the problem is solved.
And now somebody's talking about prosecuting a university. How the fuck do you do that? Even if you could, you think you can solve bureaucratic problems with more bureaucracy? Gah! People, drop out of school and learn how to *think*!!!
i love that dumb blonde trying to play devils advocate. and then tries to justify the lack of free speech by saying it somehow interferes with education. education is learning, learning is done by obtaining free information. a simple "quiet please" sign would be fine if your worried about distractions. but thats not why they made the rule now is it?
Sadly, I have to disagree with you guys. I really respect what you're doing, and I'm a huge free speech advocate, but you are overlooking how the Supreme Court has interpreted the First Amendment.
Free speech laws forbid banning speech on it's content, however "when and where" is not protected. For example, you could not hold a protest on the Interstate and block traffic. It doesn't matter what your message is, it's a matter of when and where. If your school allowed some groups to protest where you did and not others, it would be a First Ammendment violation. Otherwise, they are allowed to do what they did.
Sorry ya'll, but as any middle school student can tell you, free speech is not without limitation. UNCG is legally obligated to provide its students with quiet, safe buildings in which to sleep and study. Student protests in front of the library disregard the rights of those who simply want to read in peace, which is afterall the PURPOSE of the library. Don't jump on the bandwagon everytime somebody yells "First Amendment!"
The purpose of a library is, "a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for people to read, borrow, or refer to." There is no bandwagon jumping. Everyone has the right to protest and have free speech in a public environment. UNCG is a public school. If they were private this would not be an issue.
yeah i don't go to UNCG but I visit regularly and i gotta say, that's ridiculous. they let frats and sororities advertise and promote themselves all over campus but you can't have the right to free speech without restriction. it's stupid and that lady comes off as being a real half-wit. "we're not restricting it, just [restricting it physically]" yeah, that's not contradictory... ha!
I did go there and was pissed to find out about it. I'm glad I had a chance to videotape this and expose the stupid executive ruling that takes away the free speech that their students deserve.
These students tried to get arrested so they could challenge it in court but the school was wise to this and charged the two student leaders failure to give names and tried to expel them from school. Luckily a few activist news groups caught wind of this and UNCG dropped all charges against the students if the keep their mouth shut. I would go on line and post exactly what happened screw the school. This is the school where i graduated from. Pretty embarrassing.

Since when was disturbing the peace the same thing as free speech? This woman is an idiot.
tigerbaiter1 1 year ago
And yes we all know there are limits to free speech but,
The university takes huge sums of public tax money
This makes the university more like a public library or a post office.
Why do these institutions have (and do very well with) free speech?
What lack of security does this university have that it needs to curtail the first amendment?
Universities do not get to just "declare" what amendments they will abide by and those they will not, especially while using our tax dollars.

Actually, only a privately funded university can enforce such rules. UNCG is a public school.
