  • the god of the match grip.

  • Todd needs to turn off his double bass hacks XD

  • Todd Surcher man is my Uncel its kool i like his pet cats! they r nicealso my ant (Todds Wife) is a singer she has her own music you all should look into it.

  • @AlexPwnU123 I've met Todd a few times! He's always extremely nice, and one of his good friends who makes drums is also my friend as well! So Todd is pretty popular hah. It's a small world.. But unfortunately I don't get to see Todd very often.. he's always on tour... and Taylor Mills' music is awesome as well.

  • exactly "themetalgod21" Dave does with ONE foot what many many drummers NEED two feet fer:)

  • Wow! That's the only word for that one! Great job!

  • sweet. he doesn't get too crazy but makes it sound so effortless.

  • if you think this dude is good, llok up richard christy. he kills this guy.

  • I love Christy! You kiddin? Hes fucking awesome. I used to listen to Howard Stern a lot, and just recently figured out hes a drummer!

But Im sorry to say I dont agree with your opinion. He may "kill" him in double bass technique or something. But thats okay, cause Todd isnt a metal drummer. His hand technique is unbelievable, and I hope you would believe me, especially since this video isnt a good representation of all of his talent..

Check out his new DVD, or some of his solo work, SICK.

  • whats up? yeah this dude is pretty sick and they do have two totally different styles. you may not believe me,but i've hung out with richard. my friend's uncle was the leader singer of Death which richard was drummer of. listen to songs from The Sound of Perseverance album. killer shit especially Spirit Crusher and the cover Judas Priest's Pain Killer.

  • seriously dude? Thats fucking awesome... I have a similar situation.. in that Todd is friends with one of my moms business assiciates, so Ive gotten to meet Todd a few times.. But not hang out with him! Damn...

And Ill totally check out those songs, thanks.

  • todd is great and hes got evrything down . Dave is a true master,an innovator, He has contributed to music through innovation and his creativity which has caused him to be a great influence to musicians(not only drummers) world wide.

  • Way to be neutral!

  • in my opinion, richard christy kills dave weckl. richard plays extremely fast and extremely technical. these guys are amazing too, sucherman and weckl. but richard is on another level of his profession.

  • Well, I see it as more of two completley different styles... Christy has got some awesome chops, and great speed. Where as Weckl is consistent, solid, and verrry technical. Its more of Modern metal vs. clasically technical/modern jazz-ish.

  • see you don't know much about richard, he studied alot of jazz and alot of cuban music to meld those together with metal and made his own style. one of his influences was neal pert. he talks about this in an interview. Richard is sick!

  • Yea I know I dont.. Thats why I am going to listen to the songs you told me to that are an apparent representation of his style/talent, so I CAN know. I dont see how what/who someone studies represents their talent. I study Jojo Mayer's DVD like mad... Im not NEARLY as good as he is (duh), far from it. I chose to study him because his talent is comparable to Buddy Richs' today. Neal Peart, even though he is a rock legend, still is not as technically 'good' as Jojo or Buddy, IMO. And I KNOW Peart

  • todds a fuckin beast man!!!

  • Here the MD festival line up (what I know so far) for this year: Todd Sucherman, Derrek Roddy, Dafnis Prieto, Gavin Harison, and Simon Philips.

  • I wish I lived in/near NY... :(

  • Todd is, by far, my favorite drummer of all time. So fluent and deliberate. The best double strokes I've ever heard. Not only is he technicaly the best, but he's so musical as well. His style, in my opinion, is similar to Dave Weckl's, But I enjoy Todd's playing a little bit more.

  • todd is fart from the best.you commited blasphemy when you copmpared him to dave weckl.

  • Weckle don't know double bass..trust me, I'm an ex-tech of his.

  • Dave isn't a double bass player but he can play all the standard double bass patterns, Todd shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Dave. Todd's playing is influenced by Dave especially in the left hand ghost notes he plays but there's only one weckl. Dave idolized buddy but they sound completely different.todd needs to sound more different.

with that right foot dave has he only needs one pedal.obviously todd grew up when dave came on the scene and that influenced todd's playing

  • I am having a super hard time believing that Suchermans use of ghost notes with the left hand was brought about by the influence of Dave Weckl, since their careers rised at about the same time, ghost notes in the left hand are very natural espescially in traditional grip, and that Sucherman has no where near the credibility of Weckl. There is no way to justify either end since this is all base lacking opinions.

  • But neither ones technique could compare to the likes of Buddy Rich, (or my other favorite Jojo Mayer), but definitley distinguishable differences. Neither perfomer is a double bass player, Sucherman admits his double bass playing IS the basic patterns, and in his DVD demonstrates that he does only need 1 foot to accomplish the beats. Either way, both are virtuosos of the drumming community today, and will remain so for a long time. Reconsider before making rash comments ON a video of Todds.

  • Yes, even Dave said in a video on here that ghost notes are very natural coming from the traditional grip. On the other hand rod morgenstein who is an ardent user of ghost strokes plays match.did weckl's and Todd's career start at the same time, no.Dave is 7 years his senior and had already been playing with chick and was famous when Todd went to school. Todd cannot compare to Dave. Dave has transcended just being a drummer. he is regarded as one of the best musicians of his and anyone;s time

  • 7 years is NOTHING. Espescially since your point is that Todd was influenced by Weckl. His influences come from his childhood, and Weckl wasnt there yet! So that is false. Sucherman has performed with 20+ unbelievably famous musicians that blow radio pop stars out of the water. Weckl has been in.. 5 or 6 bands which gained no popularity among the masses? The funny thing is all my friend on the drumline know Sucherman, and only know OF Weckl.

  • Non musicians now know of Dave's skills. The only other drummer to achieve that level of significance was buddy.guitarist, bassists, keybordists all know of Dave. Todd really is nowhere near the player Dave is. just watch Dave and watch Todd. Dave is unbelievably smooth and flowing like a water fall. the sticks are just an extension of him.i;ve met dave pretty cool dude but a little self assured to be nice.but he is the best.

  • You really need to stop downing Suchermans talent compared to Weckl. Compared back to back, they both have mastered more techniques that anyone could imagine. You have yet to adress Suchermans talent, and only have disregarded it, and just keep making metaphorical comparisons with Weckl and his talent. You almost seem like you have your head up your ass like a stubborn 15 year old. Now im not in this for a win, but rather you recognize that they BOTH are equally fantastic musicians.

  • todd is probally a great drummer. but he just isn;t as good as or close to dave. you don;t have to a child to be influenced by someone.weckl was in chick corea's band which says it all. chick has the best musicians. plus, dave has his own band. dean castronovo said todd was awesome and i checked youtube and wasn;t impressed. in fact i think dean is better then todd. check out chicks other drummer gary novak.

  • Well see a lot of my opinion on Todds work was actually from the first drum clinic I ever went to, way back when. And it was his, and then I didnt know what constituted a great drummer, and just thought he was awesome. It wasnt til I got older and had gone to many other clinics, and bought so many other DVDs that I became increasingly impressed by his work. And his recent DVD really augmented my gratitude towards his work. Either way both drummers are unbelievable, and no one could match them.

  • Lol, lol, Man i take my hat off i agreed 100% your point of view are correct, the other guy know shit about what he is talking............

  • Dude, your Mom knows a friend of Todd's? That's awesome! My brother takes lessons from Jimmy DeGrasso-another amazing rock drummer who just doesn't get his due! Guys like Todd and Jimmy could teach a lot of these younger drummers a thing or two about playing!

  • I know! I've met him only thrice, but each time I was in awe (cause it was at a clinic) and hes just so ubelievable... and uh... amazing!

  • yeah Jimmy is actually really great! I hate Megadeth but he's good! nice sign. snare he's come out with now aswell! the bling thaaaang! ;)

  • Crazy ridiculous! Rock on Todd !!!

Q? are the toms tuned really tight? to be able to get that kind of response??? or is he really hitting hard to get those kind of doubles/ triplett/ type of rolls off of them?

  • They dont need to be tight, every drum is relativley mdedium tension. I got to see this set at one of his clinics and touch everything. He did show us an example that whatever the tension you should be able to roll on your tom. And he did, so its not impossible for him to do a roll on one of them, that answer?

  • Listen again. It's just a combination of bass and toms only giving the illusion of a roll. Just lightning fast.

  • ha holy fuck todd did u go to the crossroads, ha jk ur fuckin awesome iv never heard a drummer as great as you

  • Todd is amazing! Check out some other drummers like Steve Smith, Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Caleauta etc.........Start listening to a bit of jazz, fusion and latin. There are some other great drummers out there!

  • True. Hes got mad coordination, if you just watch the motion of his hands when he hits the bell of his ride, or changing stick positions in his hand.

    Idol... Todd FTW!

  • The shells are maple with an outer ply of bubinga

  • Todd plays bubinga doesnt he? or is this an early vid?

  • yay somebody with skills!

  • is that birch or mapel?

  • maple, =0

  • ew, didnt know the quality wud be this bad, hah.
