this is super awesome!! ive been playing flute since the 5th grade. im getting better. what the heck is circular breathing!!!!????? i heard this song for the first time at Blue Lake!!
@PresunCello um it's called polyphonics. It's incredibly hard to do -__- ka;sldfjk in my belief i think you have to divert your air in different areas to make that partial sound..
Well done I love this piece and you played it awesomely. It's my aim to be able to play this but I just don't seem to be able to master circular breathing you've clearly got it down to an art. :)
through the trill, you can hear someone sniffing? its actually him breahing in through his nose, whilst using the air that is contained in in his mouth to keep playing :) its really difficult though, because if you try to play the flute whilst stopping any air coming up from your lungs, its difficult to get a proper note out, let alone sustain it long enough to breathe through your nose.
wow this actually sounds like a train!!! ian clarke is a legend. the first time i heard maya i cried. circular breathing is impossible btw!!! then again i don't play the flute...:)
circular breathing is when you breathe in through your nose while you simultaneously breathe out your mouth. That way there aren't any extra breaths that interrupt whatever it is your playing. It's hard though :/
You basically store small amounts of air slowly in your cheeks as you blow out, then you inhale through your nose while pressing the air out between your cheeks. It's already difficult enough, but on the flute, it's even harder because keeping your embouchure while your cheeks are puffed out is nearly impossible for some people.
circular breathing can be done on any wind instrument. it's considerably harder to do so on the flute, cuz air flows more easily through the flute mouthpiece than say clarinet or oboe.
perfect!

how did you learn the fingerings for the multiphonics?
geo289 1 year ago
That was awesome! The only thing I would say I didn't like is how far down the flute is on the face. But wow I wish I could circular breathe!

Terrific! Do you use circular breathing only on the long trill or do you use it other places as well?

eoghdes18 2 years ago
well not everywhere...there are plenty multiphonics - key combinations where you can get at least 2 notes at the same time...
mohnbluemle 2 years ago
Not so many though. Most of them are sung and played. (I've seen the score for this. It's a friend of mine's audition piece)

Why was there a trill that lasted like half a minute?
irenicflutist 3 years ago 2
It is written in the music. On this trill you have to use circular breathing, it could be as long as you want.
shurikh 3 years ago
you can circular breath with a flute too? i thought you can only use that with clarinet.

It isn't as hard as it sounds you have special fingerings to learn and you sing into the flute for some of it.
