NA is not full of predators! Have you been to a meeting or do you need a meeting? Really?! Yes there may be some predators, but how is that different from any other area? People who are saying that NA is a cult, and that they are full of people that are horrible and are Predators really need to stop judging. It is a spiritual not religious program. It helps addicts return to a better way of life without the use of drugs. If you have not suffered from the disease of addiction
Na is full of Predators. This is true. I recently read a report that a woman was met by man in NA ab he invited her over to his place to see something and he raped her. They caught him and he went to jail. You are naive and in fact this a stupid thing to do. You dont have a clue what you are tlaking about. WAKE UP!!!
@inwood75 Have you experienced addiction before? Have you been to a meeting? Do you really know what you are talking about? I mean this is just stupid. This person could have been from their office, would that mean that that person's office is full of predators? WOW!
@inwood75 Okay, so you hear a story about one person (or predator) from an NA group and that automatically makes the rest of the group predators as well? The beliefs you have spoken of here fall under several cognitive thinking errors such as Over-generalization, Labeling/Mislabeling, Magnification/Minimization, Mental Filter, and Jumping to Conclusions. It is also an example of an Inductive Fallacy and Biased Sample Fallacy. I cannot take your argument seriously because of this.
Hopefully this clears yup the misinformation given in this "You do realize that in many treatment centers those deemed "addicts" (I make the difference as I don't recognize that as a credible DX) are in fact sent to AA, not NA, due to the frequently lower socioeconomic & educational levels in NA meetings in many cities, right? Their office certainly doesn't seem to."
3. you have the people that never realize that NA has nothing to do with what we did while active it has to do with willingness to recover & not scaring the New comer away or telling them about drugs they never tried but will now because they heard it glorified. NA is a place everyone can come to to get clean & recover at. But Cleantime without recovery makes the people with no recovery only clean time worse then they were when they were using because without the drugs they hone the disease
@gws5367 But that is a horrible myth that merely stigmatizes people who refuse to take the 12 step path! It is also very, very demeaning. Not only are we told (usually by those with a 12 step philosophy) that we have a lifelong "disease", that cannot even be proven to exist, but then we are told we're still diseased "dry drunks" if we're not chanting along to "stepwork"?? I appreciate that you like NA, but please, don't use that belief system to demean others who reject it--and are clean.
@Roberto1234567ist I insist because people DO get better and completely recover, but are still shackled with the label of having a brain disease that is lifelong. It is an unnecessary stigma and very damaging. I also have seen this belief beaten into many people to their detriment, people who wanted help but were NOT willing to say they had a lifelong disease. It's great that some don't need something proven to them, no need to go overboard trying to prove it to others. In meetings. & rehabs.
2. We have predators in the rooms of NA. These are scumbags that hit on any new girls that make a meeting they are in. Yes these are sexual predators that thereaten the lives of these new girls. RE: They are so scared/discusted they never come back, they also tell the officials at their facilities so not only don't those threatened come back but the facilities won't send them or any other patients back to NA.
For those that aren't members of NA In N.A. we have several issues that Make facilities send their patients to A.A.
1. We have the issue of Religion there are alot of people ( I was going to say members but NA members use N.A. litterature) that use the Steps in a day that has NOTHING at all to do with any 12 step fellowship or recovery) Born agains that feel that their belief is the only one & push it on newcomers whom
believe that NA is a religious colt so they don't come back.
n/a sounds great ive yet to make it to my first meeting and you know what its because the little known place called kirkby as yet to hold a meeting.
whilst detoxing three weeks ago now i put it to n/a people all i got was do your own n/a meetings we will be in kirkby soon ye im still wating? were are you n/a for me???
@utubes4u Here's what you do. Contact the closest area service. You could do this through the helpline, or go to the closest meeting and reach out to experienced members. Either way, if you want a meeting in your town, starting one is the way to do it. It is a great act of service, which in turn is a great wa to stay clean. Let me know if you need further suggestions.
I am the president of Narcotics Anonymous in Western Australia. There is only one single point of authority in our fellowship - me (and a few of my trusted servants). We have developed a new style of fellowship called "The New Way". Only those members with at least one year clean time can share. "How do we know if the newcomer genuinely attains a year clean time?". They have to adhere to 3 urinalysis tests a week for 52 weeks. Only by these means can we keep the NA message and fellowship pure.
Well, in Western Australia, you will ind a radically different and far superior fellowship methodology. The "New Way" is here to stay as the new NA way. The chaos and dysfunction of the old "self governance" fellowship style is on the way out in WA. NA will now be guided by a firm iron fist inside a loving velvet glove. The newcomer is still important but the fellowship will no longer be held to ransom by their sick and self-serving thinking, attitudes and behaviour...
First of all you're thoughts and ideas in this video are completley plageraised. What you describe NA as is taken directly, word for word, from the NA.org webiste. You should take time out to speak with NA members and get their views about this sub-culutre instead of showing faces in your documentary that are so discriminitive of what society thinks addicts look like and plagiarizing what you speak about.
This woman is not an addict, has no desire to stop using (because she doesn't use) and is therefore not a member of NA....she is a student who had an assignment to attend an NA meeting. Not being a member, she's not able to honor the 11th Tradition. The pics she showed are probably pulled off a public forum to begin with (the second pic comes from a "faces of meth" ad/poster). Fact is, she's doing a great service by telling everyone that her experience amongst us member of NA was positive.
@vet725...not all addicts are criminals we're just sick. Its an illness just like any other. I do find you pretty funny though. Thats really the only reason why I keep responding to you. I find it hilarious how ignorant you really are. If you arent the epitome of a cop then you sure give the rest a good name. haha. Take it easy bud.
P.S. They invented a thing called spell check for illiterate people. Check it out and I know I used a couple big words so you might want to check out wikipedia also
@karmalevel your not quite right, verbally and mentally. There weakness is drugs, and there illness is obsession and compulsion. But you'll know that if you would of did some research before you posted your ignorant comment.
I dont know about anyone else but I find it amusing how worked up @vet725 gets over nothing. For one I think you are a liar. And if you arent lieing about running NA meetings wherever then you obviously arent working a program. You have issues my friend and even though you are an illiterate dumbass, I would still welcome you back to MY meetings. Just because you arent using anymore doesnt mean you arent still an addict. There is addict behavior written all over everything you write.
@jcarussif You know what, that is very, very irritating. Perhaps the most irritating thing about NAers. This assertion that people are "still sick" or "always an addict", as if there is a defining characteristic of people who have dealt with addiction aside from having used drugs. I have YET to find any decent research that supports these assertions, which ONLY seem to come from those in 12 step programs/treatment centers & find this way of thinking very damaging to people. Very damaging.
@LexeconKiddo This belief has many psychological studies standing behind it. There is a reason that treatment centers use this theory; and that reason is that it is true!! You seem to think that treatment centers have it all wrong, when in reality you're assumptions are false.
@mariahselvidge Yes, and where are the studies from? Who funds them? Much of this comes from Hazelden. It's an industry. It protects its own interests. An industry based on lies. My "assumptions" are false? I suppose you don't care about the people harmed and killed, yes killed, by this unfeeling and damaging industry. If the TCs have it all "right", then how come the success rates are so abysmally low and their mantra is "relapse is part of recovery"? Foundations of sand, these people.
@mariahselvidge Furthermore, please look up some studies on your own. The Orange Papers has some pages on this "dry drunk" assertion, Stanton Peele writes on this and other 12 step falsehoods endlessly (while citing numerous studies), the now archived Stinkin Thinkin blog, the list goes on and on.
Oh, did I mention that it's insulting? This business of saying that people are "still diseased"? That they cannot ever completely heal? Stop being part of. the problem, please;) Thanks.
@LexeconKiddo You can't talk logically to these brainwashed idiots. There is no hope for them. Addictions are not disease but stupidity is a lifelong illness of which there is no cure. Fuck all they cult members!
@LexeconKiddo 1. The resources you get your information from are biased. It's great to hear arguments and points that are only relative to your belief while giving little to no fact and points of the other, isn't it? I really don't have the patience to continue this conversation if your goal is to hurt me rather than to inform me. I am active in the NA program right now. I've been clean for over a year, but it takes more than going to meetings to stop drug use. It takes intense
@mariahselvidge Of course they're biased, they've had lots of experience with 12 step programs and rehabs. As have I. If 12 steps work for you, that is great. I'm not saying it's not. But applying that philosophy across the board doesn't work for everyone. I was referring more specifically to this entrenched notion that once addicted the person is always in that state of mind, always suffering from a "disease" for which the only treatment offered is a 12 step program, which for many is simply...
@LexeconKiddo Thank you for clearing up what you meant. No, 12 steps does not work for everyone. And I despise that these therapists and doctors direct you straight to an NA meeting instead of taking it upon themselves to help the patient as any logical mind would reason.. I felt like you were attacking NA itself, but if I've got you correct, it sounds more like Narcotics Anonymous is not the cure-all for addictions. And I agree. But as long as I can help, I'm here.
@mariahselvidge Well, AA/NA are the main proponents of disease theory. I do attack that belief. I don't attack those who want to help, however, and believe that there are other ways to "get over it" all, however. But yes, these therapists and counselors (not to mention judges tho sentence people to meetings) are the biggest part of the problem. The 12 step near monopoly on treatment in this country has to stop.
@LexeconKiddo It is true that NA/AA helps some. But what other option is there for judges? A lot of people are hurting financially right now and can't afford to go to a treatment center, narcotics therapy, etc. It's easy for us to acknowledge that something else needs to be done differently, but it is much more difficult to suggest exactly what kind of change we are looking for.
@mariahselvidge It's not THAT difficult, & there are other non 12 step programs already available. Treatment is usually a moot point, as almost all are 12 step in the US. As for judges, frequently those sentenced are violent offenders--would you send your kids to meetings with rapists anonymously sentenced to them? Moot point, though, it's unconstitutional. That has been ruled on by almost every single court that has ruled on this. Violation of the 1st Amendment. Establishment Clause.
@mariahselvidge 2.) ...not going to ever work, and for an unfortunate group of addicted people, this is ultimately destructive, this notion that one is "powerless" and will always have this "disease". Never mind that this is medically reckless to tell "patients", as it's not medically even sound, but it is demoralizing and frequently causes depression that brings on periods of chronic relapse and suicides, which is just not necessary to recovering from a period of addiction (obviously!).
@LexeconKiddo Really? Are you an addict? It sounds like you have no idea what it is like to be an addict in recovery. And, by the way, we are not patients. I suggest you do some research on this before you try to sound like you know what you are talking about. With all due respect...
@LexeconKiddo 2. personal effort. The average drug addict does not want to change, expects things to change for them by going to a meeting without any effort, or makes excuses for why they have relapsed, That's how it is for a lot of users. The fault is not that of NA meetings, but of the people who attend them. If we can help at least one person through all of this, then it is worth it. I'm sorry that you don't like "diseased" as my descriptor, but what do you suggest I call it.
@mariahselvidge I'm not arguing against helping that one person, either, I'm arguing rather FOR the people who are told (and their families told) that this is the only way, and that if the addicted person is not completely compliant they should have a "forced bottom". In those cases, that is the fault of the meetings. It's certainly the fault of the treatment centers. Why not empower people instead? Help them get past it? I too once preferred the descriptor "diseased", but I now see it as....
@mariahselvidge 2.) ....highly damaging to people. Some who aren't even in NA assume that everyone who has gone through addiction is forever being tormented by thoughts of using drugs. That they must attend meetings for the rest of their lives. This also can destroy a person's medical records/medical standing, which aren't nearly as private as people assume, which is why I especially fight this idea of this being an incurable disease. That brands people for LIFE. And that is wrong.
@LexeconKiddo Think of it as diabetes. You are never healed, but you can live a pretty normal life if you take care of yourself and take your insulin daily.
@mariahselvidge 3. ? it is true that drug addiction is an on-going illness. When I say things like "never heal" I mean that at no point in time will the addict ever look at the drug and not think about it in some way that is negative to their recovery, whether it be lust for it, bitter feelings about it, or even fear of it. Also, there will never be a point in time when the addict can use it "just once" without falling helplessly back into addiction.
@mariahselvidge There is a better way than living in fear. It IS possible to simply no longer care about the drugs whether one sees them or not. It is not possible when one believes that they are powerless, however. I'm OK with people, honestly, who don't think they'll ever heal....it's when people try to apply that standard to all of us. When people make condescending comments or use such pejoratives as "dry drunk". I'm not much affected anymore by such statements, (cont.)
@mariahselvidge 2.)...but the lasting damage I've seen by petty people who cannot conquer their own struggle used cruelly over people who really do want to get better and want to do it WITHOUT 12 steps is indeed there. On the + side, there are plenty of us who are thriving and recovered without AA/NA. It's really not the helping people that bothers anyone I know who is anti 12 step, it's the help that isn't given, the damage done. To those of us who don't survive it.
Yes it did but Alcoholism was too limited for us & addicts were dying not being able to relate to the alcoholic because they focused on abstinance from a symptom of the disease rather than recovery from the disease as a whole.
As a member of Narcotics Anonymous, I appreciate your message, but you are violating several traditions. First of all, the programs is called Narcotics ANONYMOUS. Showing members' faces is absolutely against what we do. If you listened to what they read, they mentioned "anonymity at the level of press, radio, and films". Please remove this video and find a better way to compliment our program. Thank you.
Wow, you just took the 12th tradition and wiped your ass with it. Poor people whos ananimity you blew up, I hope they are still alive after that stupid move you made
I am sure you mean well. However this video is in blatant disregard of the traditions held so dearly by the fellowship you claim to represent. Please remember these traditions are not negotiable. They are truly the ties that bind us together. I beg you to remove this video. I am certain you could put together something that would still carry YOUR message without violating the traditions. As a member of a twelve step based recovery group, I understand the importance of not putting a face to it.
it was developed in the California correction system in 1948 by non addicts....it failed....Jimmy K created NA in 1953 in California and it has spread like wildfire through out the world because its membership is purely addicts.
Check out Miracles happen the birth of Narcotics Anonymous in words and pictures.
Sweet pea is not an airhead, just a little self centered, self serving egotistical little tail-wagger that God gave the brains of a piss ant. Looks like Shawn was trying to explain something to you, but your little piss ant brain can't process it.
All because "Sweet Pea" wanted to seen. Maybe it was EGO, maybe ignorance or maybe just naivety and truly done from a place of love. Who knows? One thing for sure, she was seen.
Why anonymity? Maybe because all we have is "today"
Ok we all know this may never happen, just as It may never happen that a YouTube video of a person claiming to be a "member" and authority on "Narcotics Anonymous" (however misled her history on NA is) shows up on a news program with the story of that person being arrested for dealing drugs, robbing a bank or turning tricks in a downtown motel and stabbing her "john" to death.
At the community center the following Friday there was a vote for a new Chair in the children outreach program, and guess who was voted out?
The wedding went off as planned, only with an atmosphere you could cut with a knife of fear, disgust, distrust ect.. From in-laws and their friends. Oh what a beautiful day.
The CEO who offered the person a promotion was golfing with a client who read the article, and saw a follow up on the nightly news. And asked if he had seen it? of course he had, he knew that Monday not only was the promotion off the table but that he would have to call human resources and find a way to "let go" of this person as he could not take the chance of losing clients, and money over an "addict"
Yep you see, the reporter had a daughter 12yrs old who overdosed that summer and was kind of resentful at addicts, and who knew nothing about recovery or NA and really didn’t care. All he knew is he lost his daughter. Soon as his son told him he went and dug all the dirt he could.
contributions to the community, but hey little Tommy is playing with his new PC on YouTube and sees a picture of the person his Dad is doing an interview with for the local news!! Wow he shows his Dad and the "Sunday Times" runs a story with the picture and their name about how this "Addict" is a volunteer at the community center and being allowed to interact with children, an "Addict" that was arrested and convicted for selling drugs to children at local middle schools only 6yrs earlier.
Ok sweet pea (still working on the name thing) let us suppose people in your photos get the message of recovery and go on to live a life without drugs, stay clean, gets a great job, finds love, starts volunteering in their town. Now "they" have chosen who they share their experience, strength and hope with (hence anonymity). Now here is where the fun starts. Wedding invitations go out, their CEO has them up for promotion, the local news interviews them for their selfless
Sounds nice, but that's not the way it has to be your recovery is your recovery. More power to you if that's what works for you, but if that's not the route they choose to go does that make them lesser than you? That's the way you're making it sound. Oh and by the way, calling people sweet pea is really condescending. You're coming off as some know it all elitist looking down on the rest of us. There isn't anything to work on just stop the childish name-calling. It's not that difficult...
Don't bother working on it... You'll never get a handle on it because you are a child who cannot disagree with someone without resorting to name-calling or talking down your nose at people. It's very childish and has no place in NA.
this does not break anonymity because none of the people shown are mentioned by name... so first of all you are wrong... secondly name-calling is about as unspiritual as it gets. Please refrain from doing so in the future...
hey we cant have this on here girl! i can imagine you are new because if you are new then you would understand that this is breaking traditions....we are autonomous at the level of press radio & films.......this is in some way shape or form press...we cannot have the media knowing about this. this is for people who want it not need it. please consider what your doing
Personal anonymity has remained intact throughout the video no one was mentioned by name nor was the location of the meeting she attended revealed. Leave the girl alone and focus on your recovery...
There is a bulletin located at na.org that can explain the language problem. Click services to members, Service materials, then bulletins, then world service bulletins. goto the bulletin # 13, 3rd Posting picture or recordings of out members violates our traditions of personal Anonymity. We have a subcommittee that has been educated & trained on how to explain what NA is & how to explain this to the public & proffesionals. Good luck
I appreciate that you're a professional in the health field, one of the things NA strives for is to be a viable source of recovery & recognized by the medical field as such. I've met Jimmy as well many years ago, he was great. Saying you own NA though shows so much ignorance about our program. all NA members that do service knows the groups tell the Areas what to do, the Areas tell the Regions & the Regions dictate to the WSO what to do.
being a supporter of Isreal I can see how you would think you own everything, but I'm afraid that is a delusion. I agree with you about the photos but the way you argue the point kills our side of the the argument.
there is a bulletin located at na.org that can explain the language problem. Click services to members, Service materials, then bulletins, then world service bulletins. goto the bulletin # 13
3rd Posting picture or recordings of out members violates our traditions of personal Anonymity.
Short of discussing the matter with the individual in a "loving, caring way - tempering honesty with compassion and understanding" as the service pamphlet entitled Disruptive and Violent Behavior suggests, there does not seem to be much that can be done to put an end to such behavior.
We hope you find this information helpful. Please feel free to write again if you have other questions.
As members, groups, and service committees, we are ultimately not in a position of authority to demand that another member must adhere to the guidance offered by our Twelve Traditions. As for individuals outside of NA, they are under no obligation to abide by our guiding principles, though many will be respectful if politely informed of how their actions may do a disservice to NA.
, it would seem that there is little that can be done. Sometimes, the only way to discourage such behavior may simply be to refrain from giving it the attention that seems to spur it on.
In response to your inquiry, the unfortunate reality is that the online activities of an individual may not be respectful, and may even conflict with our traditions. However, in many of these situations we are not in a position of authority over individuals in or out of NA. If you have attempted to raise the awareness of the responsible individual(s) without success,
Hi I've been a member of N.A. over 20 years & realize you're either a student or professor that attended an NA meeting, thought it was good & wanted to do something good by posting this. It unfortunately does harm the program though. 1st We are Addicts recovering from the disease of addiction, WE ARE CLEAN, not sober or clean & sober. Sober is a term used in A.A., C.A., M.A., S.A., & everal other 12 step programs that focus on a symptom of the disease rather than the disease itself.
@gws5367 You do realize that in many treatment centers those deemed "addicts" (I make the difference as I don't recognize that as a credible DX) are in fact sent to AA, not NA, due to the frequently lower socioeconomic & educational levels in NA meetings in many cities, right? Their office certainly doesn't seem to...
If you went to a gathering of moonies or scientologists everybody would be very warm and welcoming too. Most people who attend their first meeting of aa think it is a wonderful organisation. A lot of them change their minds.
clean date 11-11-88. I often am asked to share info w/ non-addicts about recovery as there are alot of misconceptions. But as we work the spiritual princiles, we will no longer need to feel the need to take other peoples inventory and will practice more tolerance for those in & out of the rooms. I'm forwarding this to a non-addict who is curious as it was made in the intent of service.
Showing those faces is EVIL, and clearly violates the traditions (in my opinion) whether they (the people pictured) consent to it or not.. Bad things happen when traditions are not honored.
Not too sure about the showing of faces?? Hmm, anonymity (privacy) is surely paramount to every individuals recovery. The conseqences re work, family and a somewhat narrow minded society can be far reaching. Easy does it. Oh and whats this nit picky semantics crap about sober or clean, as long as your off the gear, booze and not fucking up your and everyone elses life who gives a shit. Borders on the danger of isolation (ism). "Mummy, Freddy won't let me play in HIS sandpit" get beyond it crew
NA sprang from a need for a place for addicts to experience recovery from active addiction and was created in cooperation from AA. There is a difference. Showing people's faces who are members DOES break traditions. It breaks the member's anonymity. None of us are representatives of NA. NA does not consider themselves SOBER. This implies abstinence from a certain substance. We consider ourselves CLEAN. Our disease qualifies us for NA not the substance used.
I'm not outraged at this video at all. NA, AA, and all the other anonymous programs are basically just a group of addicts trying their best to stay sober. The thing I've found is, you can stay sober without going to meetings, but being connected with people with the same problems allows for personal growth. A lot of us messed up our lives pretty badly, and those problems don't just go away immediately after stopping drinking/drugs/gambling, etc. Thanks for the vid!
RUInternational There is hope for the Hopeless in that there is a cure for those struggling with addiction. Reformers Unanimous is a faith-based addictions program. We maintain an 82% percent success rate! Check us out @Ruinternational.
@Hammersley1967 Week after week , month after month you remain fixated with a fellowship you despise and hate, have you thought that maybe therapy might be the answer as an alternative to the 12 steps. I am all for taking responsobility and using alternative solutions as i have never beleived AA held all the answers for me and i also realise it is very flawed in many ways.Nothing is perfect and it is childish to cling on to the beleif that perfection exists

@RonnieNaughtylady

LexeconKiddo 5 months ago
@LexeconKiddo This belief has many psychological studies standing behind it. There is a reason that treatment centers use this theory; and that reason is that it is true!! You seem to think that treatment centers have it all wrong, when in reality you're assumptions are false.
mariahselvidge 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge Yes, and where are the studies from? Who funds them? Much of this comes from Hazelden. It's an industry. It protects its own interests. An industry based on lies. My "assumptions" are false? I suppose you don't care about the people harmed and killed, yes killed, by this unfeeling and damaging industry. If the TCs have it all "right", then how come the success rates are so abysmally low and their mantra is "relapse is part of recovery"? Foundations of sand, these people.
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge Furthermore, please look up some studies on your own. The Orange Papers has some pages on this "dry drunk" assertion, Stanton Peele writes on this and other 12 step falsehoods endlessly (while citing numerous studies), the now archived Stinkin Thinkin blog, the list goes on and on.
Oh, did I mention that it's insulting? This business of saying that people are "still diseased"? That they cannot ever completely heal? Stop being part of. the problem, please;) Thanks.
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@LexeconKiddo You can't talk logically to these brainwashed idiots. There is no hope for them. Addictions are not disease but stupidity is a lifelong illness of which there is no cure. Fuck all they cult members!
somethingdiffereable 2 months ago
@LexeconKiddo 1. The resources you get your information from are biased. It's great to hear arguments and points that are only relative to your belief while giving little to no fact and points of the other, isn't it? I really don't have the patience to continue this conversation if your goal is to hurt me rather than to inform me. I am active in the NA program right now. I've been clean for over a year, but it takes more than going to meetings to stop drug use. It takes intense
mariahselvidge 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge Of course they're biased, they've had lots of experience with 12 step programs and rehabs. As have I. If 12 steps work for you, that is great. I'm not saying it's not. But applying that philosophy across the board doesn't work for everyone. I was referring more specifically to this entrenched notion that once addicted the person is always in that state of mind, always suffering from a "disease" for which the only treatment offered is a 12 step program, which for many is simply...
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@LexeconKiddo Thank you for clearing up what you meant. No, 12 steps does not work for everyone. And I despise that these therapists and doctors direct you straight to an NA meeting instead of taking it upon themselves to help the patient as any logical mind would reason.. I felt like you were attacking NA itself, but if I've got you correct, it sounds more like Narcotics Anonymous is not the cure-all for addictions. And I agree. But as long as I can help, I'm here.
mariahselvidge 2 months ago

LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge Well, AA/NA are the main proponents of disease theory. I do attack that belief. I don't attack those who want to help, however, and believe that there are other ways to "get over it" all, however. But yes, these therapists and counselors (not to mention judges tho sentence people to meetings) are the biggest part of the problem. The 12 step near monopoly on treatment in this country has to stop.
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@LexeconKiddo It is true that NA/AA helps some. But what other option is there for judges? A lot of people are hurting financially right now and can't afford to go to a treatment center, narcotics therapy, etc. It's easy for us to acknowledge that something else needs to be done differently, but it is much more difficult to suggest exactly what kind of change we are looking for.
mariahselvidge 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge It's not THAT difficult, & there are other non 12 step programs already available. Treatment is usually a moot point, as almost all are 12 step in the US. As for judges, frequently those sentenced are violent offenders--would you send your kids to meetings with rapists anonymously sentenced to them? Moot point, though, it's unconstitutional. That has been ruled on by almost every single court that has ruled on this. Violation of the 1st Amendment. Establishment Clause.
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge 2.) ...not going to ever work, and for an unfortunate group of addicted people, this is ultimately destructive, this notion that one is "powerless" and will always have this "disease". Never mind that this is medically reckless to tell "patients", as it's not medically even sound, but it is demoralizing and frequently causes depression that brings on periods of chronic relapse and suicides, which is just not necessary to recovering from a period of addiction (obviously!).
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@LexeconKiddo Really? Are you an addict? It sounds like you have no idea what it is like to be an addict in recovery. And, by the way, we are not patients. I suggest you do some research on this before you try to sound like you know what you are talking about. With all due respect...
Roberto1234567ist 1 week ago
@LexeconKiddo 2. personal effort. The average drug addict does not want to change, expects things to change for them by going to a meeting without any effort, or makes excuses for why they have relapsed, That's how it is for a lot of users. The fault is not that of NA meetings, but of the people who attend them. If we can help at least one person through all of this, then it is worth it. I'm sorry that you don't like "diseased" as my descriptor, but what do you suggest I call it.
mariahselvidge 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge I'm not arguing against helping that one person, either, I'm arguing rather FOR the people who are told (and their families told) that this is the only way, and that if the addicted person is not completely compliant they should have a "forced bottom". In those cases, that is the fault of the meetings. It's certainly the fault of the treatment centers. Why not empower people instead? Help them get past it? I too once preferred the descriptor "diseased", but I now see it as....
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge 2.) ....highly damaging to people. Some who aren't even in NA assume that everyone who has gone through addiction is forever being tormented by thoughts of using drugs. That they must attend meetings for the rest of their lives. This also can destroy a person's medical records/medical standing, which aren't nearly as private as people assume, which is why I especially fight this idea of this being an incurable disease. That brands people for LIFE. And that is wrong.
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@LexeconKiddo Think of it as diabetes. You are never healed, but you can live a pretty normal life if you take care of yourself and take your insulin daily.
Roberto1234567ist 1 week ago
@mariahselvidge 3. ? it is true that drug addiction is an on-going illness. When I say things like "never heal" I mean that at no point in time will the addict ever look at the drug and not think about it in some way that is negative to their recovery, whether it be lust for it, bitter feelings about it, or even fear of it. Also, there will never be a point in time when the addict can use it "just once" without falling helplessly back into addiction.
mariahselvidge 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge There is a better way than living in fear. It IS possible to simply no longer care about the drugs whether one sees them or not. It is not possible when one believes that they are powerless, however. I'm OK with people, honestly, who don't think they'll ever heal....it's when people try to apply that standard to all of us. When people make condescending comments or use such pejoratives as "dry drunk". I'm not much affected anymore by such statements, (cont.)
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
@mariahselvidge 2.)...but the lasting damage I've seen by petty people who cannot conquer their own struggle used cruelly over people who really do want to get better and want to do it WITHOUT 12 steps is indeed there. On the + side, there are plenty of us who are thriving and recovered without AA/NA. It's really not the helping people that bothers anyone I know who is anti 12 step, it's the help that isn't given, the damage done. To those of us who don't survive it.
LexeconKiddo 2 months ago
Yes it did but Alcoholism was too limited for us & addicts were dying not being able to relate to the alcoholic because they focused on abstinance from a symptom of the disease rather than recovery from the disease as a whole.

Ok sweet pea (still working on the name thing) let us suppose people in your photos get the message of recovery and go on to live a life without drugs, stay clean, gets a great job, finds love, starts volunteering in their town. As members, groups, and service committees, we are ultimately not in a position of authority to demand that another member must adhere to the guidance offered by our Twelve Traditions. As for individuals outside of NA, they are under no obligation to abide by our guiding principles, though many will be respectful if politely informed of how their actions may do a disservice to NA.
gws5367 1 year ago
, it would seem that there is little that can be done. Sometimes, the only way to discourage such behavior may simply be to refrain from giving it the attention that seems to spur it on.

Hello,
Thank you for writing to NA World Services.

But as we work the spiritual princiles, we will no longer need to feel the need to take other peoples inventory and will practice more tolerance for those in & out of the rooms.
