@bojanrajcevski , they say 'What the shell' and 'Aw, shell' for the same reason that Harry Potter characters say things like 'Merlin's beard' and 'Hold your hippogriffs' - we know what they would be saying in ordinary English, and their words are tied more strongly thematically to their worlds (because wizards and the turtles don't have much contact with Muggles and those topside), while keeping the language 'clean' for the kiddies and people-who-are-offended-by-swe­aring. Also, it's funny. :)
