Something that catches my eye...at 4:06 I can't help but notice how pumped up the black gentleman and his son were to see Larry Bird beat Dale Ellis.....there is a bit of a stigma about white players that perhaps others don't wish them to do well, or wouldn't cheer for them, we know. By their reactions, it was almost as if Larry were their favorite player of all time, and this was in Chicago Stadium! I wish it wasn't the type of thing I felt compelled to bring up, but...I do.
What was so great about Larry is nobody ever took this contest as seriously as he did at the time, or since. He was a real asshole about it too. He'd go around to all the guys right before the event and he'd tell them they all had no chance in hell. I have little doubt in my mind that he could've beat Craig Hodges as well if he'd gone against him.
2/3rd's of his misses are intentional. Look at the releases. So ridiculous. The guy was a damn artist. Nobody else went out there and tried to experiment the way he did. And he loved to make the bonus money and win bets with fans, which I love that wasn't illegal yet! Those were the days huh?
ellis was a great shooter but man i hate his follow through, look at larry on that last rack just throwing up the first 2 shots like they were unnecessary...confidenceee
Dale Ellis holds the NBA record for most minutes played in a single game, when he scored 53 points in 69 minutes (out of a possible 73) for the SuperSonics in a 155-154 loss to the Bucks in five overtimes on November 9, 1989. ~ Wikipedia
Rumor has it Bird walked around the locker room before the competition confronting each player in the shootout and asking 'you think you got it?'. After walking all around the room to each of them, one opponent remarked: 'why are you asking us this Larry' to which Bird replied: -'I just wanted to know who was gonna get 2nd place' Haha legend
look at the last rack by bird, the first 2 shots you can tell he miss on purpose he shot them like its whatever, then on the 3rd to 5th ball he took his time and FINGER pointed up in the sky larry bird swag
Watch his shooting form/release on shots he misses compared to the shots he makes. You can almost tell he's "trying" to miss certain shots, and then make the dramatic comeback.
As kids back then, we were all imitating the walkoff at the end whenever on the playground. Growing up in the 80's as a sports fan was just so great!!!
@StuUngar I know but it looks like he shoots with both hands, like a pass! thats whats weird. I wonder how he controlls the ball whilst shooting with both hands thats all.
@andrehamburg some people have the strangest shooting mechanics that usually defies fundamental logic. Peja stojakovic certainly did have the most screwed up shooting mechanic but he did get 45% in 3pters with it in one season being healthy.
Bird winning this tournament shows what a great player he was. Unlike his competition he was not a " specialist " player. He was a complete player who happened to be a great shooter.
