No it's not. I love DT fan ignorance, but on a serious note, DT plays the same minor scales every other metal and rock band does, they just throw in random time signatures and it takes away from the music and it doesn't flow well, and people think they're awesome for liking it. I love Scenes from a Memory, because it was the most musical of their albums, but there are bands like Gordian Knot and Cynic that can groove to odd meters and not be choppy doing it.

A lot of bands can do things that are completely different in style...Death, Cynic, Rush, King Crimson, Mastodon, Opeth, Porcupine Tree...what you just said is almost just like comparing Cemetery Gates and Becoming by Pantera. Same band, different style and attitude. Everyone else does it without the cheesy lyrics and the attempted technicality, and it just happens and it doesn't sound like a bunch of dudes trying to be different or technical.

@fingerboy18 The thing is though, it's not authentic country or reggae, it's cheesy prog rock influenced by country (I don't even know where you get country, acoustic =/= country) or reggae (steel drum keyboard modules =/= reggae either). Cynic (and Aeon Spoke as well), Opeth, and Protest the Hero are way more diverse. If you think DT is really diverse, you have a crap load of digging to find the stuff that is truly innovative.

@JorahDumond I happen to be a big fan of Opeth and I can say that they have 2 sounds. Either damnation style or death metal. Still one of my favorite bands due to damnation. DT plays raggae life in Learning To Live 2000, also they play country hybrid picking in The Silent Man.

I think Guthrie Govan is the ultimate versatile guitarist. He can play ANYTHING.

Hybrid picking is used widely throughout all types of music. Mastodon played Joseph Merrick using a lot of it, and it's really really really bluesy, Testament's Musical Death? It's got that dark Baroque sound through the acoustics.

Certain characteristics in one genre doesn't make it another.
