Notice how the whole panel watches her departure with unabashed reverie. It wasn't much of a show - she should have denied wearing pajama tops well, even if it was so! - but she looked fabulous and had a charisma like an atom bomb blast. What a woman.
But how was she in real life? She had three husbands who treated her like she was an unbearable drag, only useful for the money she generated. It is said that they couldn't cope with her popularity...I say, there's 2 sides to every story.
@toadpoker gohleee...are liberals to blame for ebery nrgative thing? i am sick and tired of being blamed for every negative assesment of world order. i am someone who thinks himself an individual part of the whole..a conservative imagines himself the whole orbited by individuals. i do not wish to change politeness, gentility, or curtisy..i think that is respect...but no liberal ever said we should treat others with disrespect.
@toadpoker, you're talking about class and taste with a comment like that? That's rather rude. Where exactly is your civility? Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Ted Nugent and Glenn Beck are all rightees. But none of them are my idea of class and taste. One of the classiest people to ever grace a television screen on one of these game show panels was Kitty Carlisle, and she was a big-time Democrat.
@toadpoker Hollywood has always been of the left and people, influenced by nostalgia, will always say the past was better, despite true Hollywood containing many classy stars. Look at Meryl Streep, Julianne More, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Michelle Williams, Kate Winslet, etc. That's just how time evolves, past generations always think culture is degrading.
These clips are wonderful, especially viewed through the unfettered lens of nostalgia This would not be compelling TV today because it's old-fashioned and the spectre of genuine "movie stars" making guest appearances in our livingrooms is no longer a novelty as it was when TV was a relatively new medium and there were only 4 networks. Modern tastes may be more crude, but audiences today are more sophiscated and would never buy today's celebrities being presented in this white-washed manner.
@SpaceCowboy641 Well, thank goodness for that. Because if I thought for a moment that someone whom I don't know hated someone else whom I don't know, my worry might be so overwelming that it could quite possibly keep me up at night. What relief.
@JeffersonDinedAlone Not to be misunderstood: I like Doris - and I love her singing (some titles in my music folders on HDD...). It's only: I don't dream of her, she's a good girl. I adore the "bad girls": (I confess: I'm mad about Tallulah Bankhead ;-) and stick to my Goddess. Both ladies are too different to compare ... Well, each his own taste !
Well said JubalCalif. You nailed it! Today they have nothing but vulgarity to rely on since today, most directors or actors haven't NEARLY the talent that once was. I believe it's partly that and a need to cater to a 'morally declined' society...what is thought to be acceptable today. Eeek. Thank GOD for film, that it has captured a 'time' long gone...a time of true talent and entertainment at it's best!
I agree with you too. Im in my mid 40s and I know most all the people on these clips because they were famous for many years into the 70s and 80s. They were well loved, intelligent, and did tasteful work in their careers. Nowadays, there is virtually no actor , actress or notable personality to identify with, and most people are unintelligent, scandalous such as Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton. Plus a new panel would be so young, any old time actor might not be known to them.
I always thought it was very mean that, in the song, "Look at Me; I'm Sandra Dee" from the musical, "Grease," a subsequent verse went, "Watch it - Hey! I'm Doris Day. I was not brought up that way!" In other words, the lyricist was mocking Doris, along with Sandra Dee, as being the epitome of a vapid, blond, too-squeaky-clean airhead. In reality, Doris is/was a very talented, charming, appealing entertainer, as well as a kind and loving person. For the record, I also liked Sandra Dee.
I agree completely with JubalCalif. The talent, class, wit, & overall caliber of yesteryears' performers will never be seen again, on or off shows like this great, entertaining series. Unfortunately, the majority of today's performers lack so much grace, & their self-involvement & desire for fame & money so evidently trumps their desire to entertain. But at least we have these wonderful clips to know what stars should be!
No wonder the audiences went crazy when Doris Day came in and signed on the blackboard. I adore her and I would have joined them had I been in the studio then. When was this program broadcast?
The famous quote of pianist/humorist Oscar Levant is:
"i knew Doris Day before she became a virgin ".
A bit mean perhaps, but after her screen debut in "Romance on the High Seas" (also starring Levant-1948), she morphed into a rather sickly sweet, especially as she got older, goody-two-shoes type comedienne.
But she was, and is, very smart and this made her very rich indeed.
Bottom line though--can't help but admire her talent and directness. A very special woman.
wow - 1957 - took her a birthday card 2009 in Carmel - God bless her and our immeasurable gratitude to one of the finest and talented woman we have had in this country. Thank you, Norbert.
I know some complain about the sponsor name being on the set, but that also meant there was less minutes of actual commercials per a show. Glad Goodson-Todman kept the kinescopes of this show.
probably the mosy unpretentious and unassuming movie star of all time.
this lady has star appeal in bucketfulls. i think she's the best of all the golden girls ever to appear on screen and our tv's. an absolutely stunning beauty that no other singer/actress can hold a candle to.
i believe that doris day is totally a genuinely charming and caring lady that we'll never see the likes of again.
these little segments are addicting as heck--I think I've gone through 20 in a row. Unlike today's 'stars' these are people you'd want to know more about.
I agree that this show couldn't be done today....at least not with the taste & decorum used in the original. If produced today, it would soon be filled with the vulgar posturing so common in today's TV. And some people wonder why these great classics shows of the past have stood the test of time. I think it's because they had class, intelligence & wit....things which are rarely found on the shows of today. MANY thanks for sharing these wonderful clips! :)

It would be impossible to do this show today. The panel was educated, funny and sophisticated. John Daly kept everyone on track without killing the fun or insulting the panel.
Brought to you by Remington Rand Typewriters! This was class. So many don't do / have that these days. Doris Day was class, pure class. And - I love watching her turn her head in the beginning. Wow. I fall in Love with her all over again. Just the curve of the nape of her neck does something that no amount of skin in a current movie could do. She is a star because she has "it". Who can do that now?
I could not imagine this show being updated for the 21st century at all. No one can top Daly and can you imagine The Jo Bros or Jennifer Aniston being half as classy as these wonderful celebrities?
This show was a bit before my time, but I've watched quite a few of these clips and am amazed at how well John Daly moderates the question and answers.
It must be quite challengiing to clarify answers without giving away too much. For that reason, I would think David Letterman and perhaps Regis, would make good host on an updated version. But it would be hard to top Daly.
I was reading that Miss Doris Day was the most versatile performer in Hollywood and I sure agree with that statement. She could do anything and everything well. I love her singing too.
NorbertR33, please, why is the name of the show What's My Line? I mean, you don't have to say a especific line from the person, you have to guess who he is!
A person's "Line" means their "line of work", i.e. occupation. What's my Line, or "What's my job". The mystery guest is a bit different. You guess who they are, and for the most part, that IS their job!
Thanks, Chad. I get it now. Isn't it interesting that such a simple show is so entertaining? I mean, I have seen several mystery guests in a few days!
You can clearly see the tomboy in Doris here and the total naturalness. Never was there another star in films as uninterested in stardom as Doris. She was instead always devoted and invested in doing the best work she possibly could, in being prepared and professional and responsible, in thinking of others (everyone who worked with her commented on that part of her character), in being a loyal friend (she has remained friends with many people who were in her films). She is unique.
1957. Goodson-Todman auditions Ernie Kovacs for a permanent fourth panelist position. Arlene Francis broke her foot. This second mystery guest sequence happened the same night that Kovacs tried to bamboozle the panel in a "first" blindfolded contestant sequence. That funny bit is posted on YouTube.
Wow. Doris Day. Ernie Kovacs. Robert Young. WML did have the knack for interesting collections of celebrities in one place.
Thanx for posting another much-welcomed Doris Day clip.

Doris was her own person. I have total respect for her. She dated shortstop Dodger Morry Wills when this was not popular.

She was beautiful in body, face, and spirit. And Doris Day still is! She takes care of animals, I hope she lives forever.
