I think Andie McDowell is Great! She's undrestated and real in her acting. I love this scene, and every time Andie speaks James Spader eats her up with his eyes.

I always thought Spader was almost too pretty and his voice was affected when he was younger. But, starting with this movie, things began to get more interesting, though he still had that hair and that great bone structure. Now that he's older, he seems to have more deliberate acting skills and to have chosen more compelling scripts (Secretary, Boston Legal, Crash). He's matured both in looks and delivery, IMHO.

I think, besides his needin p.t., his profession threw him together with a great number of insincere people, and the emotion of disappointed expectations shows in his demeanor. That, and, maybe, drugs?

This is still my favourite James Spader film. God knows how many times I have watched it, the last time being only two weeks ago. He's truly awesome in BL, too! His speech in court often brought me to tears, speechless - a tender touch with humanity yet the impact of his presence's so magnificently profound and powerful.

But the thing I like about BL is that it is an actor playing a lawyer playing an actor. The delivery is often so self-conscious, so overly contrived, of course, to persuade the jury and to win the case. In that way, Alan's speeches take on a Shakespearean quality: they are ultimately about the roles we have to play in front of others to survive.
