@F139 The 109's chief advantage over the Spit 1 & Hurricane 1 was its fuel-injected Damlier-Benz engine vs. the carburator-fed Merlins of the former. The 109 could out-climb/dive both but not out-turn them unless the 109 pilot wanted to redline his turn. The 109 also had an 88 Imp gallon tank internally for @ 125m range. You could get to London and back as long as the RAF didn't object to your overflying London; otherwise you had @ 15 min combat time over London, @ 30-40 min. otherwise.
@TheSV3 Yeah you might be right !! that what i am saying !! British due to their early warning radar systems already had intimation of approaching Germans !! And they were waiting for them to engage them as far away from the channel so that they couldnt flee back. And this tactics worked
@F139 The tactic did indeed work! The 109e was fitted for a 550kg bomb but not a drop tank; that wouldn't happen until the e7 &F models came out and the Battle of Britain was over by then. Add to that the weaving the escorts had to do to keep pace with the bombers and later the order to stay close to the bombers until attacked didn't help much to preserve fuel either.
@TheSV3 yes you are right !! Hermann Goering made the wrong choice of making Stuka light bombers instead of Long range heavily armed bombers like B-17 flying fortress. It would have changed the face of battle as we remember it.
@F139 Goering had help in that one, particularly from Milsch, Udet, & Hitler, who put the kabosh on the long-range bomber notion. The Stuka was a great pinpoint dive-bomber as long as you had air superiority; otherwise it was meat on the table over Britain. Both Dowding & Park recognized the bombers as the real threat in the Battle and not the 109s, hence bombers got attack priority. The only 4-engined bomber I know of used with any consistancy was the Fw-200, but as in an anti-shipping role.

@jasincl only the Mk Ia, Mk IIa and the Mk Va had that configuration. Starting with the Mk Vb the Spitfire had 2x 20mm cannons plus 4x .303 machine guns (1x cannon and 2x machine guns in each wing)
Some Mk Is and IIs were fitted with 20mm cannons during the Battle of Britain, but the early cannons were prone to jamming

Really it all depends on the speed. The 109 had a much smaller wing area with a higher loading so was less responsive to turn at speed but with its leading edge slats was superior to the spit and hurricane at low speed handling, a climbing left turn was a good way to get away from a spitfire up till the Gustav (Heinz Knoke) Try and find the book I flew for the Fuhrer. I was always in the 109,s cant turn camp till I read this.seems they were quite good , just shite at landing. Tempests for me!

You see these guys here, they scored most of their kills on the Eastern Front against crappy Russian pilots / planes. Erich Hartmann for example only scored 5 kills on the Western Front. I'd expect most of these guys didn't see too many P51s.

The Mustang for most of its service had six .50 guns, but as maneuverable as it was, the maneuverability of the German fighters was still quite a match. And the service cieling wasn't really of much use except for maybe running away.
the higher operational cieling can be used to gain and advantage position during the first ride against the enemy, any way you are right, german fighters where nothing but a problem for any enemy they might encounter, fast maneuverable and reliable.

@BUDAISEI88 Hartmann was flying gliders at 11, got his license at 15, joined the Luftwaffe at 17 but didn't earn his "Wings" till March 1942 when he was commissioned to JG/52. He didn't have a kill till Nov of 42' and didn't even make 1st Lieutenant till July of 44,' OUCH! He did however receive Knights Cross in Oct. 43.'Like most young recruits, he made alot of rookie mistakes early in his combat career. He was even grounded for 3 months.

Germany lost the Battle of Britain because the Luftwaffe was not designed for this way of battle. The Luftwaffe was designed to support groundforces not to for tactical bombing raids. The biggest bomber in this periode was the He 111(2-3 t bombs). Compare it with a bomber like the US B17 (5 to 6 t) you can see Germany had the wrong planes for this job.

@jasincl only the Mk Ia, Mk IIa and the Mk Va had that configuration. Starting with the Mk Vb the Spitfire had 2x 20mm cannons plus 4x .303 machine guns (1x cannon and 2x machine guns in each wing)
Some Mk Is and IIs were fitted with 20mm cannons during the Battle of Britain, but the early cannons were prone to jamming

Really it all depends on the speed. The 109 had a much smaller wing area with a higher loading so was less responsive to turn at speed but with its leading edge slats was superior to the spit and hurricane at low speed handling, a climbing left turn was a good way to get away from a spitfire up till the Gustav (Heinz Knoke) Try and find the book I flew for the Fuhrer. I was always in the 109,s cant turn camp till I read this.seems they were quite good , just shite at landing. Tempests for me!

And those look like G6109's, unless those are Spit9's, no way in fekking hell a hurri or Spit catches it, let alone allows one of them to get that close on it with guns.
The 109s were notorious for climbing and flat out fast speed.
This vid is therefore a bit unrealisitic.

Erich Hartmann 352, Gerhard Barkhorn 301, Günther Rall 275, Otto Kittel 267, Walter Nowotny 258, Wilhelm Batz 237, Erich Rudorfer 224, Heinz Bär 221 etc.
You see these guys here, they scored most of their kills on the Eastern Front against crappy Russian pilots / planes. Erich Hartmann for example only scored 5 kills on the Western Front. I'd expect most of these guys didn't see too many P51s.

Rall was commander of a JG in France from 1944 on. Sure, he wouldn´t have seen P51.
Nowotny was commander of a specail JG, equipped with Me262. I am sure he didn´t fight the Allies, too.

The Mustang for most of its service had six .50 guns, but as maneuverable as it was, the maneuverability of the German fighters was still quite a match. And the service cieling wasn't really of much use except for maybe running away.

the higher operational cieling can be used to gain and advantage position during the first ride against the enemy, any way you are right, german fighters where nothing but a problem for any enemy they might encounter, fast maneuverable and reliable.

Not neonazi nor anything but I know my facts, in the last part of the war Hartmann shot down 5 p-51s three of them flown by americans, like it or not, because of their long flight time they had they became pretty good, Im shure any other guy with a good plane and all that experience and time might be able to do it, like Yeagger he only fly like two years, hartman was fliying since 39 till 45

@BUDAISEI88 Hartmann was flying gliders at 11, got his license at 15, joined the Luftwaffe at 17 but didn't earn his "Wings" till March 1942 when he was commissioned to JG/52. He didn't have a kill till Nov of 42' and didn't even make 1st Lieutenant till July of 44,' OUCH! He did however receive Knights Cross in Oct. 43.'Like most young recruits, he made alot of rookie mistakes early in his combat career. He was even grounded for 3 months.

Germany lost the Battle of Britain because the Luftwaffe was not designed for this way of battle. The Luftwaffe was designed to support groundforces not to for tactical bombing raids. The biggest bomber in this periode was the He 111(2-3 t bombs). Compare it with a bomber like the US B17 (5 to 6 t) you can see Germany had the wrong planes for this job.
