i never learnt how to do long division in school, im 18 and loved math, so my parents got me a tutor, but i asked to do long division and never got enough practice so im looking up youtube vids.
there is a VERY big problem with this....dont teach kids to divide first using an algorithm. Children need to learn with base 10 blocks first to see groups. Schools are now moving away from "how" to solve - instead, we are focusing on "why"
@titations973233 Interesting. I think the math minds of today forget the simplicity of yesterday. That's why I was so lost in school especially when it comes to math. I use rod and staff because its very simple and laid out without all the info that kids don't need. I used her math and my kids found it kinda confusing but once you understand "her method" it makes a little more sense...
I challenge anyone to come up with a decent reason as to why anyone needs to know how to do long division on paper. We live in a world of calculators on almost every cellphone. Accountants use calculators. What is the point in knowing this?
@brettwinstead When everything electronic is fried by an emp blast from nuclear apocalypse, and you have to divide x amount of broken calculators by x number of minutes wasted thinking this was going to work without knowing your long division!
Graduated highschool this past year, and am taking Pre-Algebra and Algebra I in college - haven't done this stuff since the third grade, and even then I had a very limited understanding of it - I can't tell you how stupid I've felt these past few weeks - but this helped me a great deal.
@MadnessJuan Your not alone. I'm 18 and I still don't understand. Can someone help me please? I'm very bad at math, because I bearly know it. @MathMammoth , can you help me?
When a person stops & thinks about it carefully, math is awesome. Especially arithmetic. I mean.......think about it, everybody. The facts don't change, and the methods used to arrive at those facts don't change. Not really. 5,000, 10,000, 40,000 years from now, kids will still be learning and then using this same methodology to get their answers to arithmetical questions set in front of them.
This is so GREAT...glad to see that you are not using zero's to fill spaces!! I am tutoring kids in math in FL and they all use that zero fill in and I truly thinks that it confuses them because they horrible in math, either can not do it or only know how minimally and it is 5th grade doing multiplication and division! Teachers should watch your video...great job!

@titations973233 I agree that both the "why" and "how" are needful... this video is concentrating on the "how".

Math is EASY......All you have to do is to memorize the formula.....then follow the simple rule on dividing, adding, subtracting even multiplying....

1:18 That's everyone has trouble its the "memorisation" not the division the "memorisation" duh wow ok keep going.

You are an EXCELLENT teacher, You don't know how long I have been asking my teacher to explain Long Division like this!
dubcars101 5 months ago
Thanks so much! During middle school, I concentrated so much on science and other classes, and so I forgot to do long division since 5th grade.

Thank you SO much. I'm in grade 7 and after summer break I had forgotten how to long divide! This is very helpful. I understand it now.
Missmyusername123 10 months ago
@Missmyusername123 how do you have summer break with like 7 weeks of school left?
silverchoas369 10 months ago
@silverchoas369 It's possible Missmyusername12 lives in some other country where the school year is organized differently from the US or Europe.
