Judo is "AWESOME. The effectiveness of "judo" depends on many factors. For example, where is it being taught? who is teaching it? and most of all personality and calibre of its practitioner. JUDO is simply what you make of it. I'ts different for different individuals. The "Gentle Way" is scientifically designed. IT'S AS EFFECTIVE AS YOU WANT IT TO BE.

That's probably the type of argument I'd use if someone asked me about it (I've been practicing it). But being objective, few blows to the head is heavier than a throw. Judo is torn between throws and groundfight, maybe bjj is more effective. But I still think if you know kung-fu, or savate or something like that, there's no measuring it.
I respect your opinion, however, most martial arts trainning is based on "katas" and fancy moves. I'm not saying they are not good, but because of their INHERENT RISKS of injuries, kumites in most contact sports or m.arts are done in a careful kind of slower manner, using protection. Yet "RANDORI, IN JUDO" is done at ful speed, strength, ful power; as if you were fighting for real ( adrenaline pumping good )just no kick or strike is allowed. What "saves" you is the matts & knowing how to fall.
The complete judo uses katas in "sutemi-waza". It encompasses wrist, arm, knee locks all kinds of chokes, strikes, kicks and throws not just easy take-downs. The dangers in other arts don't allow practitioners to express themselves realistically. "Randori"in a good dojo is done freely, against any skill any height or weight. When i fight i use elbows, knees head, everything, and then i like to "SMASH" my oponent really FAST and HARD. i've left people on the ground and had to help them.
A specialized judoka on standing techniques, namely "combo-throws, cleaned-timedly ones" would throw his/her opponent on a hard surface, believe me is not funny, and depends how you fk land ( on your head, shoulder, flatback "hard". He is finished. Judoka has to be calm and fearless. Kicks and punches could be blocked or dodged. I could also kick and punch. Judo has to flow naturally, no too much thinking. Kicking, punching, biting (human nature). Judo is a "good base". I heard BJJ is BAD JUDO.
Do your homework. I've tested it myself and i know judo is JUDO, with sutemi-waza and all. And... And... BELT means Shit! It's not an indicator of someone being able to kick ass. Even the "National Police Force in Japan uses "JUDO". End of Story.

Judo is nice and beautiful. But it's arguable how effective it is.

Judo has katas (ie opponent doesn't strike back - so not just randori). Actually I think you have to know few for each belt color.
And you just implied other forms are more dangereous. Hm...

the only Kata required, is to attain a belt is for your black belt. according to the Kodokan.
some clubs do ask the judoka to perform certain throws to obtain the next belt.
my club (Kidokan) does not.
progression and the willingness to compete in
shii (tournements), will determine your belt achievement
not required according to the Kodokan.

Don't you think that sounds like giving away belts? I had to work my butt off for mine.
