AS was poorly promoted and attacked with false and biased reviews from the get go. people who actually saw it were impressed...as was I when I got the DVD sent from the US. Part 2 will have far better promotion and the DVD sales are set to make part 1 a hit.
@Riellysdad How can someone attack a theater version of a movie but not the DVD version? You logic is wack...and paranoid. Face it: the market spoke: the movie sucks. Greed is evil and people are not. IF there is a sequel, it will be made not because it's profitable, but because it's right-wing propaganda financed by Kochs. They want to get part II out in Sept to coincide with the elections. Creeeep-yy. Get some critical thought and lose the ideology. It's breaking a good country.
What characterizes capitalism is not the bad taste of the crowds, but the fact that these crowds, made prosperous by capitalism, became consumers of literature, of course, of trashy literature…. But this does not prevent great authors from creating imperishable works. (Ludwig von Mises)
Ayn Rand's novels have been selling well for decades. I doubt if this "host" will have the ability to make the same boast for his "career" . And for god's sake, learn how to pronounce her name! This guy is just full of him self and it's hilarious !
worst movie of 2011!!! this movie was absolutely nonsensical. i'm an objectivist and think half the shit in the movie was stupid and superbly unrealistic.
So, the movie companies refused to advertise it, it was only shown in a handful of theatres and was basically hidden from the public. And you wonder why it bombed at the box office? Buy a clue.
Unless we're going based on how the audience felt afterwards. Because the response was overwhelming. The audience loved it. Few movies had ever had people rave about it like this afterwards. Which actually makes one of the most successful movies ever. Guess it depends on your perspective...
Nice! It's out of the theaters now and they lost $15 million on the $20 million price tag of the movie. The market has spoken, Shruggers, and everyone knows the wealthy are scam artists - that's why nobody want to watch Koch Industry's propaganda.
@MoralMoney ...The DVD market however is delivering payback justice for AS....because the liberals can't lie and defame it twice. People all over the world are making it a DVD hit.
@Riellysdad So, was this after the recall of 100,000 DVDs due to the description on the box saying, "Ayn Rand’s timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice," when it's a story of self-serving and self-interest? And, globally it looks like this is a DVD flop too. I'm not sure who misinformed you and what lunacy leads you to believe there's a conspiracy to prevent people from seeing the film in the theaters, but not the DVD. You do realize it's the same bad movie either way, right?
Computer simulations of tiny robots with rudimentary nervous systems show that, over hundreds of generations, these virtual machines evolve altruistic behaviors.
Grant Bowler was in this film, great actor but i'm not so sure about this film, i was never a fan of Ayn Rand and this film is by all accounts hard to sympathize with, but i'm sure it has some redeeming qualities to it.
Wow, I just saw the clip to Atlas Shrugged, and that looks like the most boring movie in existence. No wonder why it's losing money.
Also, Part 1? According to Wikipedia this took $20m to make and it's grossing $3m. If what Sam is any indicator of how the film is going, they'll be lucky if they can even make up the money in DVD sales, fat chance.
So not only does Atlas Shrugged fail in the "Free Market' of ideas, it also fails in the "Free Market" of film.
i listened to atlas shrugged book on tape... it was long... what's funny in the trailer is that the "let me finish speaking" moment never happens in the book. Whenever the protagonist is in a social setting and they start telling their 'inspired' point of view, they will talk for ten to fifteen minutes with out any of the other people interrupting or disagreeing or anything, they are always just dumbfounded by the 'amazing' insights... so... yep. that's wacky.
@morganseathomson LOL I listened to the audio book too and I 100% agree. There is no way I would have finished this by reading it on my own but since the narrator keeps charging on I made it. The serial bloviating soliloquies in this book are unreal in their length and abundance.
funny how he says hollywood hates a female lead when for the last decade we've been getting "girl power" shoved down our throats in movies like kill bill charlies angels and 500 more.
@OxTheWriter Many "unbiased" media critics went on an anti-Atlas attack blitz, demonizing the rational self-interest philosophy, and about 90% of them disliked it. Whereas, audiences that actually bought tickets and saw the movie, about 85% of them liked the movie and would recommend it to others.
The reason you didn't like it is either because you are a collectivist, you didn't actually read the book, you simply don't understand economics. I am 15, undereducated, and still understood it ;)
@OxTheWriter Firstly, the characters were not cardboard, they might have been single motive based at times but they were for the most part dynamic, in the perspectives of their views. Secondly, the dialogue was suspenseful at times and relaxed when it needed to be, it varied on the people talking, but the conversation between the State Science Institute representative and Rearden was excellent. And this particular tin was harmonious. And attacking that description is not a good base for arguemen

Rand might like the fact that a movie based off her book is being slammed by "majority report." as if rule by consensus was undoubtedly correct.

People don't watch movie adaptations unless they're based on vampires or teenage wizards. You know fantasy.
Which is why it baffles me that this film is bombing.

I feel like a bonehead for believing in that "Rational Self-Interest" bullshit...
Don't blame me, I was only 16 when I became exposed to Ayn Rand - I didn't know any better.
Now that I'm 18 years old it's clear to me that it's foolish to place my entire life on a single second-rate philosopher.

I think attendance of Atlas Shrugged will go up when they give away free cocaine.
If you want to see a MUCH superior take, watch one of the best tv series ever made:
Profit, starring Adrian Pasdar, Lisa Blount, Keith Szarabajka, Lisa Darra, Lisa Zane, Sherman Augustus, and more.
Check out the pilot:

@davedavedaveannoy1,
No, I didn't like the book because its characters were cardboard, its dialogue was wooden, and its writing rhythms clanged like tin.
I understood it all too well, frankly. At least you're proving your description of being "undereducated."
