THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU. so many people attempt this and fail miserably. It was phenomenal. Great casting on all the voice parts and great listeningn to each other..and thanks for getting a tenor who can sing the top part. EVERYBODY was brilliant thanks again
Very very nice production. Woman 1 seemed to fall the slightest bit flat (which is always the worst) mainly when she was sustaining the long notes. Fly shouldn't have been sustained so long. Other than that she was decent. Man 2 was excellent. Woman 2 was very nice, especially when she slipped into her head voice at the appropriate time. Man 1 was phenomenal. The notes that he hit are at the top of most tenor's ranges and he did it effortlessly. Band was great and nice set too! Great production.
OK, I'll be constructive: there was no need to change the music just to hold out "FLY" it wasn't what jason Robert Brown wrote and it wasn't executed very well in both direction and performance. the added measures were both uncomfortable for the listener and awkward for the actor.
In defense of the performers and as someone who has directed this show twice, there are extra measures in the score for the show. In the printed music "Fly" is written out for 24 counts (approximately what was done in this recording). On the CD it was cut down to what everyone is "used" to hearing. I find that if the singer can do it well, go for it. More times than not, it's cut anyway.
You guys have done a phenomenal job with this very difficult song. And women 1 should not hold that note too long, it gets monotonous. Women 2, your voice is a little too bright round it out a bit and don't sing through your nose! And Men 2, you have a fantastic tenor voice! AHHHH I love it! take care of that voice it could be on broadway someday.
Oh. My. God. Bravo. Every single Youtube video of this opening would make Jason want to retract the amatuer rights to this show, BUT > you guys rock . A few pitch issues with Woman 2.... but resolved with excellent harmony work throughout the final segment. CONGRATS Man 1, you blew me away . Wow. Keep singing. So Amazing
i absolutely love the fact that you really slowed down the beginning. whenever i listen to the official recording i am like "man that needs to be slower and more emotion filled!"
I'm sorry. If you didn't realise, the original recording is played , on piano, by Jason Robert Brown himself. Can you imagine the COMPOSER playing the piano for you? you would do WHATEVER he commanded. I'm quite sure, that the original recording is as close to the perfect intentions of the composer, as any recording would EVER be. Period.
I love the slow start, as an interpretation, but let's not forget Jason's intentions.
Wow, there are few versions of this song on YouTube that I can actuall listen to and not critique or cringe during, but yours is one of them! There were a few minor pitch issues, but nothing that took away from the performance. Props to the guy singing Man 1 for actually singing everything that JRB wrote. That's a beast of a part! Really, really nice work, guys!
This may be the only version of this song on Youtube that doesn't suck as...congratulations!!
(I'm intending this to be a lot less mean that it sounds...great job, for real!)

The band was pretty damn good, the harmonies sounded on pretty much all of the time, and the set was PERFECT for this show.

dont be picky, everyone interpretes shows differently. If everyone did every show the same way, it would be sooo boring...be imaginative.

Woman 1 held that first note out way too long... Woman 1 is singing in the dark! Man 1 is a little shakey, but better than others that I have seen.

oh, absolutely, i completely understand. trust me, i LOVE jason robert brown. i fully intend to marry him, screw him, and have his kids lol.
BUT
in my own humble opinion, i would prefer the beginning to have a slower feel to it. that's all i was saying.

fantastic, i may be directing this next year...that'd be awesome if it turned out like this
